David By safety I was more refering to driver saftey than car strength, in that a hard top offers more protection from low flying tarmac than a soft top, it always shockes me how many (even top level competitors) press against the roof when they roll a car, this being a thin piece of tin or even canvas between you and 100mph tarmac. maybe in general, but in the specific arena of MG club racing, there would be no safety derived advantage in using a hardtop (especially a 'race weight' one) as it doesn't provide any structural strength, unlike a saloon or factory built steel hardtop/coupe; and with short races with no driver changes, this rule would not be a factor either, so Nigel's theory of superior aerodynamics would appear to be the logical one. Margaret (and others) I am pretty sure that this alsao has something to do with wear in the pivot points and hinges of the frame. This is why I think this... When you operate the clamps on the header rail it has the effect of tilting the front hood rail backwards so that it contacts the metal of the header rail rather than sitting squarely on top of the rubber seal. This is aggrivated by overtight hood fabric, but more significantly by worn pivot points, particularly in the short metal arms that screw to the header rail. I am... MORE
Hi, My gas pedal often sticks (does not return all the way back). I can usually fix it by tapping it a bit but sometimes I have to quickly hook it with my shoe to get the revs back down to idle speed. I have determined that this problem is caused by corrosion on the floor hinge rather than a problem with the throttle springs, cable or the bent rod between the cable and the pedal. I have improved the pedal's action somewhat by applying oil and wd40 to the hinge and by excersizing the pedal to try and... MORE

I had a buddy in high school (Ted Owens) who had an MGA '60 1600 in Iris Blue with wire wheels and the "thin" whitewalls which were the rage at the time. VERY pretty car. Retired Navy fighter jock. Nigel, you know the saying, when you in stuck in a hole, stop digging! Lighten up!! ;-) If these colours that Colin lists were the way those cars were prepared by the Australian franchisee that assembled the cars, then they are, for Australian cars, the original colours. And in the UK motor industry in general, colour shades varied considerably and, just as with other componenets, if they were short they were just as likely to knock off a few in the nearest colour available on the adjoining production line. Nigel... My guess is the car was solid and there wasn't much to be spent on the "restoration". If it runs (and is as solid inside) as it looks, this is a beautiful original car. Let's see if it reaches 15k by closing. Wouldn't be surprised. Local BMW/Volvo dealer had a similiarly restored BE ('59) with good w/w's in his lot about a year or so ago, asking 13k. I purchased from Moss2 adaptor #235-875. In taking off the old canister, I found the adapter sits real close to the generator. the old canistor mounted on a small mount that in turn attaches to the engine block. the sole purpose of this appears to be to raise the oem canistor oil filter high enough to clear the frame that runs below that side of the engine. if I remove the threaded studs that this mount attaches to the engine block, can I mount the adaptor directly to the engine block with the supplied allen head studs? A lot of modern cars use an all glass bulb with just two wires from it, that is a firm push fit into a plastic holder which itself has "ears" that fasten to the back of the speedo - or whatever. Well, Chuck... This is a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional, multi-interest normal human being bugeye group!!! Sorta. :) The tilt-front bonnet will tend to go too far forward. A simple fabricated cable/ bungee cord system within the engine compartment fastened to the inside of the bonnet in appropirate places will prevent going too far forward "over-center". Remind me never to take these apart again, what a job getting the rev counter bezel back again. The inner disk just would not drop in, it had sprung out never to go back. Two G clamps and a small hammer persuaded it to reseat. Found a selection of gasket material by the yard to make all new seals. Have tried 12 v 5 watt side light bulbs, much improved but they are bayonet connectors not MES so am working on adaptor. First choice is to dismantle 5 w bulb and unsolder it to give a glass envelope with... MORE
Nigel, I am very afraid to post any pix you could see. The car is in three colors of paint plus the original Brookland green. (Seeing what looked best, ya know). I have lowered the front with 1275 springs but not the rear just yet. I'm running American Racing Mags 5.5 inches with 165 x 70 tires. I've cut off the front bumper supports and sold off the rubber bumpers. The interior is new and pretty well sorted out. McGee runs and drives well except for my often mentioned clutch problem. Guy Hey! Thats MY cheapo trolley jack! My dad got me that for Christmas one year I think, and it's been so useful. Which alloy castings? The steering rack ones? LOL Nigel, Yes paint looks good. Good finish if that is "straight from the gun" - you've learnt quickly. I was quite pleased with mine at that stage - anything would look better than the earlier states it was in. After the paint had hardened, about a month later I went over the whole thing with an electric polisher - made quite a difference. If you don't have an electric polisher there are reputed to be things that you can do to a cat which will render a similar effect. Guy "Guy Weller" 29257... MORE
Tonight, while working around the house, I found an unusual use for a speedo cable. The bathtub drain was very slow this morning. Before I took off to defensive driving class, I removed the screen, and pulled out enough hair that is looked like I had removed a small rat from the drain. Upon returning home, I was told that the tub would not drain. This was puzzling, as it was at least moving slow that a.m. I tried a plunger, and hair clog remover, to no avail.
