Maplins have a web site (maplin.co.uk) and do mail order from it. The wire is quite thick for the panel lights and shoulds easily take the extra load. When I get to Maplin I will buy a holder and a halogen bulb, and try to modify the existing holder. In the past I have smashed up a bulb and mounted the new holder in the screw bit of the old bulb. Now the old bit screws into the original holder and the new bulb goes into the new holder. Got two problems, not a lot of light and bad... MORE
Oh, yeah.. that's right. 1098's didn't come with an oil cooler. Right, right, right...I had to transfer mine over from my wrecked PO'd '67 I was working on, when acquiring my 1098 equipped BE to take it's place. I am a little surprised you are only getting 65psi "cold" out of a "new" motor, Brad. Not that this is "bad" or anything like that, but most newly rebuilt motors built to street tolerances (IMHO) put out 70+. Sure you got that the right way round David? If they were in series, then the current through each bulb is the same, and the same as the current in the feed wire. But they are in parallel, and then the current through each is added up, and it all has to be supplied by the same feed wire so this carries the sum total of the current through each bulb. Since the concern is the capacity of the feed wire to carry that current without overheating (depends on its resistance) I was asking if anyone knows what the... MORE
Thanks David, I understand the maths OK, but don't know what rating the dash wiring is de signed to take. There are several bulbs all in parallel on this same circu it as well and the total load is going to go up by more than double. Still OK? Guy "Guy Weller" 29187... MORE
David/Guy, You are correct in what you say BUT the total current in the wire will stil l double if all the bulbs are replaced as each one will be pulling double the current. From the drawings I can see there are around four lamps in the same circuit so the total wire current will go up from 1A total to around 2A. Nige & Terry, This is helpfull. There isn't a Maplin shop anywhere near me here "ooop no rth". There may be one down in Manchester, but I guess that will have a we b site. If not I will try RS Components web site (RadioSpares). One problem with going from 2.2W up to 5W bulbs is the additional load on t he wiring. Will this release the wire smoke? Looked at Maplin's web site and see that ultra bright White LEDS are 2.49/2.99 each. How many you would need I do not know as equivelent to ordinary bulb is not given but light output is 9200 mcd. But they do do a L52AK a 12v 5w halogen bulp, wire ended, for 99p. I think the original are 2.2 watts - so more watts and halogen sholud enable us to see the dials in the dark. Will pick one up when I next pass Maplins. Need to do something about the holder though. Remember not to touch the bulb... MORE
Hi Bob, We are not experts by any strech of the imagination, but I can tell you some of the experience the wife and I have had with photo scanning. 1200 DPI takes forever to scann, and unless you have a couple of gig of ram, forever to try and work with. Also, I was told that most printer wont print better than 3-400 DPI, so why scan more than that? I found some old negatives in my father in law's stuff, of B 36 's taking off from Tinian where he was stationed. I plan on scanning them... MORE

While perusing www.ragtops.com yesterday, I noticed an optional windshield for MGAs...really cool looking to me. It looks like it might be doable to modify a spridget windshield frame and a piece of lexan to make one of these. It looks more appropriate than a booklands to my eye. Of course, unless I find some way to lower the seats in my midget, it wouldn't work for me. I already look over the frame as much as I look through the windshield. Nigel, I never know at what point in time I'm entering these threads so I apologize for any untimely input. FWIW-I couldn't bear to cut holes in the brand new back panel. I searched for small speakers on short "stalks" but couldn't find any suitable. Finally saw a set at the British Union Car Show last Sept. that screw to the flat area behind the seats. Well done Don, I love it when I am prooved wrong on things like this! Now whilst thinking of instruments.... Mine are always very dim. I did try spray-painting the inside of the cases with white to increase the light reflection but it didn't really make much difference. Can one fit higher wattage bulbs? or would that release smoke from the wires? has anyone tried fitting some LED inside the cases? Guy "Guy Weller" 28990... MORE
I was thinking in terms of the dyno for correct needle selection, and correct setting of the distributor. Although not totally ignorant, I do not have the experience to set up either properly myself. (there goes the perfectionist again!) I also liked the sound of those rimflo valves, which, together with a few simple head mods, can bring even more of the 'fun factor'. Reading that book has suddenly given me a far greater understanding of why what I discovered over the years was working, actually works. Not only that, I can see how to improve on it. The... MORE

Bob, Thanks for the vinyl dye tips. One little disappointment I just discovered . . . I have a beautiful wire spoke steering wheel from my 69 MKIII parts car I had planed to use on this car . . . just discovered they increased the diameter of the steering wheel spindle end at some time after the MKIII :-( However, over all I am very pleased with things are going. Trust the weather is better down there than up here . . . too much rain, but the sun is coming out and we should have a few... MORE
Roger... Over here, the self-contained (within the distributor) electronic ignition is called "PerTronix". Over there, it is known by another name and dammit, I cannot think of it but I am sure a UK lister will help me out here (hopefully). Like most new things, the PerTronix (a Hall Effect Device) had it's share of teething problems when new in terms of failure's. Since I have been using one for the last 3 years or so, I've had no problems. There is an upgraded version out now for most applications called (surprise!), the PerTronix II...which compensates for reduced dwell... MORE

My cuz in Irving called me this morning. He is having trouble with his 97 F150 6 cylinder 300CID....it is underheating. It will barely move the needle off cool, and after a while, gets even cooler! I suggested the thermostat, unchanged in 140,000 miles might be stuck open...but would it get more open (opener?) as the engine warmed up? What is normal? Lost my low & high beam headlights, except for quick high beam flasher which I have to maually pull back on and manually hold back to activate the high beams. 90 Dodge Dynasty, tried replacing steering column mounted multi-function dimmer switch(no luck but interestingly, the switch was a LUCAS<PRINCE OF DARKNESS SWITCH! headlight in/out switch but it was replaced about 5-6 yrs ago. Also I might take it by Circut City where about 7 yrs ago they customized the wiring so that whenever the ignition was turned off, the lights would automatically go off even if they were left... MORE
Son and the car are in Cincinnati. Body is good, little rust, no collision damage. We took the 1275 and the trany out to inspect, and all seems o.k. Things I think it would need are : Engine gasket set, clutch and slave, Motor mounts, battery and a soft top. If I where nearer I would have had it on the road. We have had it for about a year with no procross except the inspection. He was going to do the body work first and paint, I was more intrested in getting it running, for fun, then paint... MORE

Jim- It really was easy. After I had the rear support set up, I actually lifted the car ever so slightly with the floor jack under the diff. This took the weight off the attachment points, and away I went. Not to be a smart ass, but please don't forget the brake lines, emerg brake cable, fuel line and prop shaft. Once it is out, it is fairly easy for two people to lift it onto a set of horses for attention at a comfortable working level. I did a full restoration this way, including painting. By the way,...
