Robert, You are going to be sorry you asked. For other listers, log off if this is too boring and it has NO LBC. Back in '72 or so, I was taking a camping trip around the United States with my then wife and two kids, age 9 & 10. We were driving my white Chevy California hippie van with side pipes and big tires in the rear. My wife was a fashion model and I had long hair and a beard. We stopped in Sheffield Texas for gas and I tried to buy some beer. The old crone... MORE

For the imperial yard to metre conversion I always use the phrase, 'all the 3's - three foot three and a third' When said with an Irish accent it sounds wonderful(!) One version of why US fluid sizes are reputedly smaller have a historical connection in that barrels of spirits exported to the New Colonies from the Homeland were subject to a high rate of evaporation (theft by the sailors/carriers) and what on paper was a gallon of whisky leaving the UK ended up as a short measure when it arrived at the Colonies..... Thus the short measure was... MORE

Weren't chrome wires optional on US Midgets? If not, you could always sell/swap for standard ones - there's always someone out there who wants a bit of bling! David "David Jacobs" 36965... MORE

I rebuilt the engine recently and I am trying to sort everything out before I try starting it. I took the plugs out, I thopught I primed the pump, and then I cranked the engine untill the battery was half dead still no oil pressure. Before anyone asks, I put three quarts of oil in already and there is a new filter installed, and the oil cooler is all hooked up. Whats wrong with this picture? "gan5ub91179g" 36936... MORE

Don't forget to check the cylinder head face is flat. Check the valve seats for pitting/burning. If they're not too bad, lightly grind the valves in, if it's really bad, consider getting the head converted to unleaded (something to think about anyway) Regarding the choke cable, if you're not messing about with the carbs, other than taking them off the head, leave them on the manifold with the cables connected. Other than that, get some small spanners! If you can't find any to buy, get a cheapo one and modify it to fit. Heat it up and hammer it... MORE

Other than the choke cable, horn and horn push, it appears to be complete and original. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=39405&item=4547048934&rd=1 Go get it! Colin "Colin Dodds" 36917... MORE

I am mid way though replacing the head gasket on my '76 Midget. I am going to replace all the gaskets you get with the kit but I was wondering if there is anything else worth doing while I have the chance? I have already flushed out the radiator. My engine is a little sooty around the valves faces but nothing too bad. THe pistons bore are all nice and smooth. Also is there a special techinque for getting the choke wire off the carburettor? The nuts are too samll for any of my spanners. Cheers Gav. "gav_newman" 36921... MORE

Jim, Common theory is that you should turn on the valve and either run the water through the heater core, or use a short by pass hose and loop the water back into the engine. That will insure better cooling for the number 4 cylinder which I hear can be a problem. Bob in San Diego "Robert D. Gardner" 36879... MORE

If you google for 'screen saver generator' or similar, there's plenty of free/shareware programmes available to make your own. (and loads of pics on the net to use), or some image editing software, such as Paint Shop Pro, comes with a generator built in. Hope this helps. David "David Jacobs" 36855... MORE

Rick, My V6 is a GM crate motor sold for replacement of the Chevy S10 2.8L V6. It is rated at 160 hp if the stock S10 2bbl intake and cast iron exhaust manifolds were bolted back on it. With my headers and Holley/Offy intake system, I would guess mines's up toward 190 or so, but I have no dyno data. This month I am planning to install a set of Crane roller rockers, so that sould push it up over 200hp. My traction sucks. The 185s I have don't hook up. The only time they did when I... MORE

Rick, On my Sprite, I run 2" pipes from my header collectors back to oval Flowmaster mufflers. They are pulled up hard against the floorboards with a quadruple layer of fiberglass/foli insulation. My floorboards do not get hot. The fuel and brake lines and the battery cable nearby are heavily insulated and I've had no problem with those either. Oh, and the exhaust sounds tolerably quiet at low loads and idle, but nasty when on it. My ground clearance is about 3" at the low spots on the collectors and mufflers. I have 24 ga. stainless steel skid skins... MORE

Rick, The clearance depends on how low your car is and how stiff it is. The closer to the pan the pipe is, the more important a heat shield would be. Especially where your feet are. In extreme cases, I have heard of doing the math and figuring out the area of a 2 inch pipe, then getting tubing of the same area, like 1 inch by 3 inches (or what ever is the same area) and that gives you an extra inch of ground clearance. Should work fine, just make up a square to round adaptor to attach... MORE

Could be lots of things. Check the easy stuff first. Plugs, plug wires, coil. Also check that the low voltage connections to the distributor and coil are sound. Tell us what's been checked/tried so far? "joe blxfstz" 36786... MORE

Does your fuel gauge go to the far right after a fill-up? I've found that a minor short (or excessive resistance) has made my fuel gauge read a bit low in the past. Finding a loose or corroded/rusted ground wire has usually fixed the problem. If the gauge does go full right, it might be a tank/sender issue. Adam J.Kopff 36734... MORE

74F here in Dallas. Drained just the radiator and replaced that volume with nothing but distilled water (thought that was the best way to go, introducing as little as typical water impurities as possible) and obtained some very notable running temp results. I'd say 20-25' less (from 190F) cruising temp and not quite 200F at most red lights. I'm satisfied. Thanks for responding. Now, if I can gain a comfort level in adjusting the carbs (dual HS2). You may be hearing from me next on that. If you know the cooling system is sound, and the engine is correctly... MORE

We still build some cars in the USA, but I'm sad to say our manufacturing is also being rapidly exported to China (and India). I think your and our problems have mostly the same causes - primarily incompetent and short-sighted management who stuffed their and the union's pockets during the good times, and failed to see the low labor threat, or to do anything about it. In addition our politicians (yours too?) have shot us repeatedly in the foot, for example granting most favored nation status to China. It is disgusting. Our President George DumbYuh Bush cites the new... MORE

If you know the cooling system is sound, and the engine is correctly tuned, then your problem is simply that the cooling system on these cars is inadequate. An electric fan won't fix that. Drain the rad and fill it with water (no anti freeze) plus a corrosion inhibitor. That will solve the problem. "joe blxfstz" 36649... MORE

Robert, Absolutely do it. The last time they were here, I waffled and did not do it and I have been sorry ever since. Hint, Take a video camera and still camera with you and roll the video before you get on and don't turn it off until you are back. Ask some people on the plane during the flight to take your photo, hand them the camera. Added bonus, talk to the pilot and crew afterwards (on camera) and I am sure you can find some old timers who flew on them around the ground looking, ask them... MORE

1. skip vice, it draws the heat out. Use a cinder block, or something like it to just set it on and heat. Acylene/MAPP gas & Oxy also works well and is hotter. We are talking a large chunk of metal and small rubber seals. 2. or hotter. 3. Or large pliers to pick up while hot and rap against a piece of wood on the ground to knock the piston out. Works great. Jens, I agree with all the above and I might add that if it was running ok with oil pressure and no rattling sounds when put sleep, it should be ok now. The first thing I would do is to make sure if there is pressure or not. I would pull the plugs and add a little squirt of oil to allow the engine to turn over faster, pull coil wire and crank engine for at least 20 to 40 seconds. If no press, pull open an oil line, or pressure valve cap, and crank to see if oil... MORE
