Nawww...I kinda like him;) I will order a new cable though...it's just odd that this one is short. Somebody must have messed with it at some point, because I doubt it was always this way. Hi All. We've been installing new brake shoes on my '79 Midget. When we got it all apart and cleaned everything up, we discovered that the cable for the hand brake system was "too short" and had been applying pressure to the right rear wheel. (Which is apparently what made that side wear so badly) We removed the cable and found that the plastic coating was badly deteriorated and broken, so we removed all of the plastic until we can get another cable. Fellow spridgeteers, I recently purchased a new chrome valve cover and gasket for my 1500, but unable to install because the studs are too short. Hi all,1275cc sprite speedo works fine up to 40mph then from there flys round to the 100mph mark and flickers,what do you think the problem is, need a new speedo ? the cable is brand new and the drive in the box seems ok,also the cable seems to have a nice curve on it and is not kinked. regards wes "wesley5060" 32491... Thanks to all that answered. Now for the next phase. The Autometer Phantom fuel level gauge that it looks like I am going to use is rated as 240 ohms empty & 33 ohms full. Methinks that this gauge with the stock Midget sending unit will read full before its really full and empty before its really empty. Or are the resistance values close enough that it wont make a noticeable difference? They offer a matched "universal" sending unit that hopefully I don't need. Thanks again. I've got a 45D4 type dizzy (non-electronic) on my 1275, which Moss sold as a 'performance' item - not sure if the distributor drive is non-standard to mate up with the shaft thing in the 1275 engine, but it definitely fits! Hi guys Whilst clearing through some of my 'stuff' to do with the car, I've come across this. It's a NOS Lucas Electronic Ignition Model 45DM Distributor and AB14 Amplifier, which I beleive is a straight swop for the 45D dizzy as used in the 1500's. It's new old stock - never been used and comes with all the bits and fitting instructions. I'm probably going to sling it on ebay, as it's no good to me or my 1275. Close but no cigar - the MkI/II Spridgets with 1098 engines had electric rev counters, though again, this is only a clue, not a definitive identifier of a car's age - this is just the sort of thing that gets swapped around when the tacho drive gearbox fails! Measure the battery voltage, with an alternator it should be 14.7 volts (about) at fast tickover with no lights, heater etc on. You can buy a digital multimeter for 5 in our loacl market or maplins. Invaluable. Sounds like a dead alternator to me. Incidently the light only shows that there is a vlotage on the field winding of the alternator (self generating) not that it is actually charging. I have had one and only one instance where the field voltage was being generated but the alternator was not charging. The multimeter sorted it out. Tery "terry.isherwood" 32424... MORE
Strange??? Not at all...machines and their various parts eventually wear out all the time, George. My 79 just started this weird thing: when starting up, the red light comes on and stays on for approx. one minute. Revving the engine slightly makes it glow brighter. The altenator belt is adjusted properly, the connections all seem clean and tight, and it's a six month old Diehard, so I don't think it's the battery. Any of you good folks have any ideas? Is this harmful? It runs perfectly, lights, heater, wipers, all function normally, but it's never done this before... Thanks, George "chuibuddy" 32420... MORE
The lack of door handles sounds right, but the biggest and most definitive mark of a Mk1 midget is the rear suspension, and its also the main cause of death (to the car!) if it's a mk1 midget it will have quarter elliptic springs not semi ecliptics like later sprites/midgets. I also suspect the MkII MG and MkIII AH had an electric rev counter, which the Mk1/II did not, this is a mechanical device driven off the back of the dynamo from a reduction device. Finally got a chance to follow the wires for the non working brake lights. The stoplight switch doesn't complete the circuit and light the brake lights, they do work when I use a jumper wire and short across the switch. It is located on the end of the MC housing inside the engine compartment. Anyone know the tricks to replacing the switch? TIA Neil "Neil Hernan" 32401... MORE
When I first got the bug for these cars, it was with a 65 Midget. I bought a 73 with no title for the drivetrain, and put it in the 65. The 1275 HAD t he hookup on the filter mount (spin on) so I just hooked the wire to it lik e it showed in the Bentley. A few months later, on my way home from Fort Wo rth, the light came on. Some guy with a 76 midget wrote me and asked... I have a 1976 Midget. The car has something on it I can't figure out. There is a cable from the speedometer head to a white box and from the white box to the transmission (for the speedometer gear). My question is the white box. On the back it says "percent of life used" and on my car it is 32. Does this correspond to the mileage on the speedometer? What is the box for? Anybody have an idea? Percent of WHAT life, or WHOSE? Which way is it "almost vertical"? The eye of the spring should be behind a vertical line from the eye of the mounting point. Even if it is only very slightly forward of the mounting point it will prevent the shackle moving into the right angle and the spring will never settle to give the correct ride height. If the shackle is even slanted a little forward then use a pry bar to flip the shackle so that it points rearwards. Do this with the wheels on the ground (or on ramps), not with the axle hanging on the... MORE

...when I want them to. I have wire wheels. The rear wheels will come off OK, but I can't get the hubs to budge at all on the front wheels.
