I recently had the pleasure of having dinner with Kevin and Cathy Valentine in Pennsylvania. Over dinner we of course discussed Spridgets, and I told him how I was having trouble with mine running rich and was contemplating a change of carburetors. Kevin pointed out that most carb problems are electrical and asked if I had checked the points. Well, I still haven't but I did decide to make them a moot problem by ordering a Pertronix Ignitor. Hi, Edward... I just sent you a link to a PerTronix supplier which may be helpful to you. Also, LBCarCo carries these at reasonable prices. MiniSpares/MiniMania as well. The Crane set-up uses an optical sensor rather than an HED however, I've us ed Cranes for many years in the past on both PO'd "tuned" VW Bug and '74 Spridget and have found them to be ultra dependable/reliable as well. My horns don't work, The car is an early 1500 midget with the horn push in the centre of the steering wheel. The slipring contact is live, but the steering column shaft is not earthed. If I use a wire to connect the slip ring connector to the shaft the horn won't work, however if I jumper it to the outer part of the column it does work. Ah....I percieve, Jens! What they've provided is basically their road "performance" curve contained in their "Y" (yellow) commercially available dizzies. The chart they included is the actual advance curve contained within the distributor. This would be in "distributor degrees" Jens, at "distributor rpm". Double the figures in each case for engine rpm and advance available at the crank. Then add in the initial static timing recommendation (4-6 degrees) to the foregoing figures and you'll know how many degrees you are getting at the crank at any rpm, per their "static" timing recommendation. Hi Chaps, I've got a 12G 295 stage II head with Rimflo valves on a 1098 bottom end. I need help on head gaskets, the bores have been ground out to 1150 and the head gaskets give up easily. Thanks for all the comments. Everyone was pretty musch right - it's the oil filter sensor wire and dash warning light. We had replaced thar damend old oil filter housing with a new spin-on and lost the reference. No sooner had I posted this message and ran back to the garage, my Dad figured it out. I'll be asking you guys soon for ideas on transporting the ol' A-H from El Paso to Dallas TX. We're just staring tomake plans, and so far folks like Uhaul haven't been very helpful (the A-H is too narrow for their auto transport).... MORE
G'day Vince Were does this yellow/brown wire start and finish. That would help determine what it is for. But I think Chris might be correct - it's the oil filter warning light. Inside the oil filter housing is a spring-loaded ball bearing. When the filter gets blocked (cos you haven't changed it for 17 years) the pressure causes the ball bearing to move against the spring thus opening a by-pass passage for the oil. On the outside of the filter housing is a spade terminal. Power runs from the ignition circuit, through the light bulb behind the red light... MORE
Vince, I have the ring-bound British Leyland shop manual 10th ed. from 1970. It covers the Sprites Mk 2 - 4 and Midgets Mk 1 - 3. There are 8 different wiring diagrams covering the various U.S. and Brit versions over the years. On the two diagrams that most likely were for your car, I didn't see any YN anywhere - or on any of the others either, in case somehow you've got a newer wiring harness. Folks, my Dad and I are trying to trace a lone yellow/brown(YN)wire. It's remained disconnected during the restore and has not affected any other electrical system (positive ground)or function. To be clear, this is not the brown/yellow (NY) wire to the alternator. We can't seem to find reference to the YN wire in the shop manual and have no reason to believe this is nothing but stock. Yep .. think of it pushing the jet away from the carb body for richer, just the same as the choke does when you pull the cable. I have the same pleasurable job ahead of me now after getting it to start on Saturday (first time in 8 years !) the dizzy was in a state, but soon cleaned up and setting the timing by eye was surprisingly easy ! the #2 carb choke mechanism sticks though, so have that to fix amongst other things. Jens...suggestion? Go out and purchase a simple Facet solid state electric fuel pump with it's own "incoming" filter. You want the low pressure one, around 3-4psi. Cut out a piece of rubber gasket to place between the pump/body and install it where the stock SU pump went (according to your Haynes manual or whatever you are using) in later cars. Fellas! I just have to tell you this, its probably old news to most of you but anyway. As you know i have been having problems lately (yet again), the symtoms were many and hard to make out. Well today the ba***rd fouled again and wouldnt run properly just like it was running on only 3 cyl. We are now 110% certain that its the petrol causing it. What happens is when the engine has reached normal temprature and i stop (with engine running) or drive very slowly the temp rise very fast (15-20F) and the engine starts fouling.... MORE
Jens, Great, did you beat him? What kind of Porsche? You might try and do a test before doing a new fuel pump. Try and take 6 or 8 layers of kitchen aluminum foil, crumple it a bit so you have some air space between layers and wrap either the fuel pump and/or the exhaust pipe. You might try and go one step further and take a wet red shop rag and wrap the fuel pump first then wrap in layers of foil. You can also take one or two layers of beer can cut open and wire it... My 1275 sump pan comes down about " below the rails. I didn't have a tape measure handy for the distance to the ground, but the brochure (again for a late 1275) gives 5" but doesn't say where it's measured. David "David Jacobs" 33296... MORE
Hi Mike, Just as new cars have a maintenence schedule of changing the brake fluid every 2 years or 25,000 miles, you should do the same thing. Brake fluid becomes pretty corrosive in a short period of time if it's not changed routinely. So just do that and there likely won't be any corrosion on the naked internals. Ask an owner of a new car what it costs to replace an ABS module that has corroded because of not changing the brake fluid at the proper intervals. Warranty won't pay. OUCH! Guys - I know this was discussed a while back, but what is the stock body height of a Midget? Was looking for the distance from the ground to the bottom of the rockers? or even better would be the distance from the bottom of the framerails to the bottom of the stock oil pan, that is if it sticks below the frame at all? I will probable lower the car slightly from stock but needed someplace to start from, don't want to scrub the pan off. My car is stripped to the tub and I'm trying to figuring... MORE
Some bits are interchangeable - tail lights are the same, mirrors are similar, but Midget ones need an extra angled plinth to sit at the correct angle due to the different curvature of the door panel compared to the 'B. Headlamp bezels again are slightly different, but you can generally make B ones fit. Without knowing the spec of your car (North American? UK?) I wouldn't like to comment on the air filter interchangeability. Wiper switch will probably be a two speed for the B and only a single speed for yours but again could be made to fit.... MORE
