Also, the use of a "relay" will take the heavier load of halogens off the switch itself. Relay is a good idea , I thought they were fitted as standard. Specially for high beam. I also thought by using Halogen gas (or Quartz iodine ) you got a brighter light for the same amount of electrical power needed for the old bulbs . I stand to be corrected of course. - Having just replaced ONLY the bulbs in my daily car with 'bluer brighter bulbs' with no ill effects , except a lighter wallet. Just that I can see... MORE

I filled the clutch fluid to the full level and just went out to drive her. I haven't driven her in probably a month. Now, there's almost no play in the pedal coming up off the floor before the gear engages and once when I stopped and had the clutch in I felt the engine bog down and it ground going into first. I eventually was able to gently work it in. It's also making an odd noise that I don't think I can describe but know it's not normal for this car. The oil on the dipstick registers... MORE
Wire wheel, rear axle, I have gear oil coming out from the welch plug (oil collects in the spinner). I pulled out the plug and the seal is bad. I am unable to find a direct replacement part from Moss. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to build a new plug and/or seal to eliminate the oil leaking through? I don't know from the VIN, but if the tach is original and says pos earth, then it must have been. The tach won't work negative earth without some internal wiring, but the generator and fuel pump will, the gen by simply repolarizing. the aftermarket radio is almost certainly neg earth, as there haven't been any pos earth ones made for a long time. Installation of the radio may be the reason for the conversion. I'd leave it neg earth, as that condition slightly lessens body corrosion. "Jeffrey Holmes" 26677... MORE
I have a 1967 Sprite that I just bought. The guy I bought it from swears that it was originally a negative earth. However, he only had it a few months and was not sure. Points leading to a negative earth; It is currently hooked up that way on the battery and the generator and fuel pump seem to work fine. There has also been an aftermarket radio installed. Why I think it was a positive earth: The Tach says positive earth (which is currently not working) and the VIN is more like a positive earth...HAN9L64745 Is there anything... MORE
Instead of elbow grease and blasting... A set of wire-brushes for an electronic drill (or more agressive if you like an angle-grinder) can do miracles! OK, it's a bit noisy, dusty, potentially dangerous (these brushes can also eat skin fairly easy...don't ask how I know this!) but cheap and almost as good as blasting. I wrote the following post thinking about rostyles, but after I looked at the original post I realized you are asking about early steel wheels. Oh well, some of it is still pertinent, so here it is: I've had success using a combination of chemical stripper and sand blasting. I've used the enviro-friendly stripper (letting it sit for three hours) then I hosed off the residue and the remaining paint blasted off quickly at fairly low pressure. no, ours are centre-laced (look at a TC's wheel for example of outside laced) It's difficult to compare the offset on centre-lock wires, because they don't have the same flat face that a bolt-on wheel has, as a datum point. Do Dayton say where they are measuring from? And will they exchange them/refund your money, if they don't fit? The 'direct replacement' 4.5"ers aren't exactly the same as stock, as stock are 4", so you are already starting off from a different position. I think the only foolproof way is to check them on the car, with tyres on,... MORE

OK Gang, In my quest for a wider wire wheel, I have found Dayton makes a 13"x5.5" center laced wire wheel. I believe our stock wheels are bead laced? Not a big deal of difference I would think. Now, their direct replcement 4.5" wheels, have a 3.5" back space. The 5.5" wheels have a 3" back space. If my feeble mind is correct, that means an additional 1.5" would be to the outside on the wider wheels. I have a RWA Midget, so it shouldn't be a problem, right? wrong? maybe? Mr.H Loved the classic look of my wire wheels as well but it didn't save 'em. Between cleaning, truing and only 4.5 wide track I couldn't justify keeping them. Switched to a set of American Racing wheels for a Vega and am very happy with the results. FYI-The new wheels are 5.5 inches wide. Had to change rear pumpkin/axles and hubs and perform minor wheel well surgery front and rear to accomodate 165/70's on the new wheels. HA! I just called Victoria British and told the young lady I needed new wheels for my 73 MG Midget. Her response? "the whole wheel? like the tire?" She finally told me the only wheels they have are Dunlop wires. I gave up. Gil, sounds like you have the same mixed emotions I do. I love the way the wires look, but I'm not sure of the maintenance issues either. I DO know that I won't be trying to tune them myself. As far as cost goes, the knock off minilites look pretty cool too. Maybe someone on the list that supplies parts (ED) or has access to these wheels (ED) or something (ED) could post a price comparison of the wires and minilites (ED) or rather minilite replicas. ????(ED)????? Well Bob.... While you don't NEED a wider wheel than 4.5, you will get more out of the upgrade to 70 series in terms of handling (all else being equal) with as much of the tire "under" the rim, rather than having the tire "beyond" the rim. And I would think, that Minilite knockoffs (or "wannabes) would require a helluva lot less maintanence than wire wheels? They would also probably be lighter(?) which will decrease unsprung weight, the effect of which would be like going with a lightened flywheel in terms of performance (more or less:). Cap'n. Yes... Bill Perry does favor the new synthetic oils as they are simply superior to the mineral oil based products, which BTW are pretty damn good themselves these days. Synthetic also allows for MUCH easier shifting of the box in cold weather, especially subsequent to initial start after the car has been sitting in freezing temps. overnight. However, their "slipperiness" and flow characteristics virtually guarantee that in all cases, you will either "lose" more or "burn" more in either event, the loss of synchronizer action in the gearbox already having been discussed. I am looking to replace the wheels on my 73 Midget. I was putting this off, but now I find my tires are weather cracking, so if I am going to buy tires, I may as well buy some that fit the new wheels. Not sure if I want replacement wires, or knock off mini lite replicas.
