CA Smog check exemptions: "Some vehicles are exempt from the Smog Check program All 30 and older model-year vehicles are exempt from all aspects of the Smog Check program, but owners of these vehicles are required by law to keep their emissions systems intact. The brake failure light is on the right hand side of the radio console above the cigarette lighter. (I think it should come on with the handbrake as well.) A single dash light bulb shouldn't cause total failure, as they are wired in parallel, so it's just a case of methodically checking the wiring/connections/switch etc. I think they're fed from an unfused supply. Hi David You were right on ths wiring colours I didnt notice that differnce. The dash lights area Red wire with white trace Whereas the diode is White Wire with red trace out on the male connector and Green with orange trace on the female connector. So now I have two more questions regarding this 1) If it is the brake failure warning light where abouts on the dash would this be displayed as there is no obvious point I can see. I havnt noted this so it may be functioning well after all. 2) What could be causing... MORE
I think it's a diode rather than a fuse, but the only one I can find in diagrams is associated with the brake failure warning light circuit rather than the panel lamps. However it's possible the colour code has been mixed up - some of the wiring to the brake warning circuit diode is white with a red tracer, the panel lamps supply is the reverse, ie red with a white tracer. Hi Neil I had the same problem with mine but got them working in the end although I am not sure whether the same circumstances may apply. I say this as it was my brake light and indicators that were not working, everything else worked fine. It mentioned in the Haynes Manual that these two are related and when I fixed the one both sprung back to life. What it was down to was a loose and corroded connection between the brake pedal switch at the master cylinder and the wiring loom. I choped these off and repalced the... MORE
Hello there I am trying to get some information on the dash instrument back lighting circuit on my UK 1978 Midget 1500. This has never worked on the car but after overhauling the wiring system as part of a stripdown I have and taking the oportunity to look at this issue I believe I have traced the problem to a mysterious black cylindrical unit I cannot find any refernce to, possibly a fuse The offending item is a black plastic tube approximately 14mm in diameter and 34mm long. Guy W. Slower traffic staying right is the general idea but in moderate+ traffic it doesn't always work that way and it can become more a general free for all, most especially when 18 wheelers are thrown into the mix. This is theory which works until you come upon an entranceway with many cars merging, then you may find yourself forced into the middle lane in a situation wherein the traffic flow in the middle lane is doing 70 and you lack the power to merge left easily into THAT flow to make room in the right lane for... Well said, Don May... You hit the nail on the head..exactly spot on. This is the position I found myself in, more or less. Prior to knowing about the Datsun 5 speed, I attacked "the problem" by moving the whole rpm range upscale to 7-7.5k rpm by "Vizarding" a 1275 and making 4-4.5k rpm a comfortable cruising rpm. Supertuning the motor to take higher rpm is not inexpensive... for it's operating range is just short of a track motor. Weber 45DCOE, bigger valves, prepared head, VP3 cam and 1.5 rollers, big bore LCB and large diameter free-flow exhaust system... MORE
Yes an excellent motor sport diff used it all last year however it is very busy on the road and a bit short on long straights and to get the best you need a free reving engine etc mine is safe to 7500 and revs freely to 7000. Don, Depending on the severity or gentleness of the curve, use a longer or shorter board for sanding. (Steep curves= shorter board.) For inside (concave curves) use a cardboard roll or a very short nap paint roller woth sandpaper rolled around it. Also, remember I told you to sand "crosshatch" so you avoid low/high spots. This is especially true for curved areas. It does take some artistry , a sensitive touch and a good eye though. Did you buy the guide coat like I suggested? This helps a lot too as vents you from sanding too much. You should... MORE

Unless a PO has changed it over to negative ground the bugeye will have a positive ground. The 73 RWA came from the factory with a negative ground. as from factory: 59 Bugeye . . . positive ground 73 rwa ..... negative ground. Don "Don May" 25138... MORE
I would rather ask and be taken as simple minded that not ask and do possible damage . . . is there any problem jacking up a spridet's rear differential housing ends, starting the engine and going through gears with the rear wheels off the ground? Don't know. The car was not driven for almost a year and I do not know what all the PO did to it. The guy I bought it from bought it running, drove it home and a couple of times around the block, did some work on the battery pan, put in a new radiator and hoses then got too busy at his job to do more so never took it off the no-op license and let it sit for almost a year, then when he tried to drive before selling it discovered he could not get it into... I have a general question regarding tire pressure versus tire size. If significantly wider wheels and tires are installed on a car do the recommended tire pressures change? If so by how much? At the moment I am concerned with my MGTD but when my Bugeye is on the road I will have the same concern. I wish . . . couple of them knocking them off today. Have an idea what a large acorn falling 20 feet sounds like hitting a bare metal bugeye bonnet? It is very strange behavior for the last 15 years they usually just pick the things bring them down and bury them. This year it is like a feeding frenzy, eating parts of acorns and dropping the rest, breaking off whole ones and letting them fall to the ground and the acorns are still green and not ready to drop on their own. Very different over here in Berkeley on the mud flats without any bed rock close to the surface . . . and close to the fault. Was Short but very strong and super loud. Course nothing compares to the 89 as far as quakes I have been in. I usually don't go into survival mode with quakes, sort of a cheap thrill, but the 89 quake sent every cell in my body into survival mode. Can those of you who are running front tube shocks let me know which ones (manufacturer and part#) you're running? I'm looking for a set for my 62 Sprite (I already have the conversion hardware) and I'd like to get a feel for what other people are running. Anyone running the Carreras shocks from Winners Circle? KYBs? I'm also running the 400 lb competition springs with an alternate engine.
