Hello all: This Question is about my '68 Sprite "Rosa" - 1275cc Is it possible that the timing chain jumps a teeth on any of the sprockets when it gets worn? I have my engine out of the car for an unrelated issue (replaced the starter ring gear =96 different story) and noticed that the notch in the crankshaft pulley is about 15 deg past the TDC mark when the nr. 1 piston is at TDC. I checked the posiiton of the nr. 1 piston visualy through the spark hole, and by using a wire and am quite sure... MORE
Nology Hotwires.... exactly, Spencer...without 3rd party empirical data, I don't tend to "believe" either. if Vizard hadn't tested them, I wouldn't have spent the bucks....they're not inexpensive. But they do last a long, long time. They are very well built and I can tell you from experience they will burn off oil on spark plug tips, even in engines burning a quart every in <500 miles. You'll still get crusty brown carbon deposits that will eventually fill the gap and "short", but you won't be getting wet oil fouling at all, assuming compression is reasonably decent. Agree with you, JSB...3rd party proof. Nology wires..........David Vizard....... ......tested these in a V-8 (dynoed) for Motortecmag.com in 2001. They work ed! Couple of more lbs of torque and a wee-bit more HP at the top...all else equal. Cap'n Bob '60 Frog "Robert E. Shlafer" 35611... MORE
Jim... most people convert their points ign. system to electronic Crane, PerTronix (Lucas/Aldon "Ignitor") to get away from the maintenance schedule which must be followed to retain the intial efficiency of the stock points system when new points are installed and concurrently, dwell and timing are accurately set. For as you know, as the points wear, dwell and timing change. Thus, every 3k miles or so, resetting these values is the only way to maintain original efficiency of the points type system. Simply converting to the foregoing electronic systems while maintaining the otherwise stock coil does away with the... MORE
The "longer" spark is supposed to lead to more complete combustion of the fuel/air mix which should be better for power and/or economy along with fewer emissions. Of course, for the "longer" spark, you need more "juice" to begin with..... :) Cap'n Bob '60 Frog "Robert E. Shlafer" 35606... MORE
Hi Guys, I decided that I do not plan on using my Hardtop for my 73 midget. It need to be cleaned since it sat in a desert for 17 years, the rear plastic window is pretty shot, and the rubber is ugly, but there are no cracks, etc. I have it in storage now, and I would love to have it go for a good cause. If anyone is interested, i can walk to my neighbors house where I have it stored and take photos. I also know of some guy like 5 blocks from my house that... MORE

Ian, (AKA Mandy!) If you have looked at my photos you will see that the rear wheel arches were in a pretty poor state. They had been repaired with Polyfilla and newspaper! I cut out old rusted metal one section at a time, and replaced with steel panels that I cut, bent shaped and welded into position piece by piece. This included most of the inner wheel arch, the heel board, cills, spring mounts, floors etc. Most of these panels I fabricated as I was on a "we tight" strategy. I did buy a repair panel for the lower... MORE
Mitch..IMHO.... if you are going to use the Judson, I would call APT and source the best quality valve they have to offer. Otherwise, unless you've got a hairy cam in there or are running 10.0-1 or a higher static compression ratio, standard quality/design should be fine normally aspirated. About oversized exhaust valves....many moons ago when the first 1275 Cooper S types came out, they went with a larger 1.4 intake valve and subsequently, went to a larger than stock exh.valve to "match", feeling this would give more powe r. It didn't. What it did do was lead to... MORE
As for 3 why not try the MOSS parts manual (MGL3300), you need the 1967 to 1979 one, there is an earlier one. 126 pages of exploded views, descriptions and part numbers. They were giving these away at a show so my friend picked one up for me. As for 4 I find the Haynes as good as any. I did get a workshop manual thinking it would be a lot better, it was not. Thanks for the answer R. I did the job yesterday with an ordinary grease pump, and as I also have read the book, I took only 10 strokes. Jan Erik "jmaalen" 33527... MORE
Can anyone help please? I have a 1098cc MG engine in my 1961 Mk I Frogeye Sprite and have just removed the head for fault analysis for a rattling noise. The Haynes manual (page 37) states there are tappet covers but they are not identified in the exploded view of the engine. Can anyone help to identify where the covers are? and Is it possible to remove the tappets without removing the cam? Many thanks for your help Lee lparke12@... 33529... MORE
Hi Chaps, I've got a 12G 295 stage II head with Rimflo valves on a 1098 bottom end. I need help on head gaskets, the bores have been ground out to 1150 and the head gaskets give up easily. QUESTION: Should I use copper bi-metal or composite? or is there something better? When to tourque the head down, and what settings? Any help appreciated. TIA "gerald_r_simpson" 33523... MORE
Jens.... What, pray tell, are you waiting for? Install the oil pressure limiting valve NOW and you will answer your own question! :) The answer is probably yes. And MAYBE it will also solve that puff of smoke you get out the exhaust after driving from cold a mile or so down the road? But have you changed to a fresh rubber diaphragm within the valve? And don't tell me the valve is new so you don't have to!!! :) Are you (per Guy's post) using the filtered plastic oil filler cap as well? Higher than required oil pressure... MORE
Ya' know, guys.... The "flat rate" manual is for the purposes of giving the customer an ESTIMATE of the work to be done by the "average" mechanic (who may or may not be as described by Toyperson!:):). And that's all the flat rate manual was ever intended for. The job is supposed to be charged based upon "actual" time, estimate based upon "flat rate" notwithstanding. Be careful out there...wherein there exists all sorts of ripoffs from those who are truly ignorant or those who know better but abuse the system due to the old "fault" which fouls up even... MORE
Simple...something is broken within... and driving further with it will simply cause more damage as metal parts circulate within, doing more destruction to the various gears, etc. So, it is overhaul time or replacement time. Who does Spitfire parts/gearboxes (or 5 speed replacements) for 1500's is the question. www.tsimportedautomotive.com These people should be able to point the way. I know there's a Ford Sierra 5 speed conversion for the Spit driven Spidgets but am unsure of it's availability over here on this side of the pond. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 33486... MORE
Vince, I have the ring-bound British Leyland shop manual 10th ed. from 1970. It covers the Sprites Mk 2 - 4 and Midgets Mk 1 - 3. There are 8 different wiring diagrams covering the various U.S. and Brit versions over the years. On the two diagrams that most likely were for your car, I didn't see any YN anywhere - or on any of the others either, in case somehow you've got a newer wiring harness. FWIW, which ain't much, but thought I'd let you know at least. Hamondale "hamondale" 33482... MORE
Folks, my Dad and I are trying to trace a lone yellow/brown(YN)wire. It's remained disconnected during the restore and has not affected any other electrical system (positive ground)or function. To be clear, this is not the brown/yellow (NY) wire to the alternator. We can't seem to find reference to the YN wire in the shop manual and have no reason to believe this is nothing but stock. Does anyone know where this goes? Also, we're trying to figure out the large, red-jeweled light (which is not the ignition light on the tach) located square in the upper middle of... MORE
David, You wrote that the switch itself, the plastic switch, is leaking. Hate to tell you, but it should not have any brake fluid getting to it and it is not designed to hold brake fluid. Those seals should prevent fluid from getting to the switch. If the switch is leaking, the seals aren't working. Get the right parts, for safety's sake. It's ONLY brakes. Peter C. "Peter C." 33471... Jens...suggestion? Go out and purchase a simple Facet solid state electric fuel pump with it's own "incoming" filter. You want the low pressure one, around 3-4psi. Cut out a piece of rubber gasket to place between the pump/body and install it where the stock SU pump went (according to your Haynes manual or whatever you are using) in later cars. This pump will work with SU's just fine without a pressure regulator. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 33377... MORE
Esteemed Listers, Although of late I have been lurking, I am out of my hole and asking a rather silly (stupid? moronic?) question. Which way does one turn a mixture control nut on an SU to enrich the mixture? I am having my first go-'round with these exotic carbs and getting anything other than garbage out of the motor has been beyond me thus far. The mixture question would help. Yes, I've read the books but I am either illiterate or am just dense. Rob C-75 midget running out of summer. Webfoot Leisure.com rob@... 866-530-9801 toll free " robbiesg@...... MORE
