I don't think so, Tom. Considering what you paid, if it's in the decent mechanical shape claimed, I think you did OK for what you paid, personally. Ken, When you are measuring the end float on the cam are you doing it with the cam drive gear torque to spec? Without the gear in place, yes you will have plenty of end float. The cam drive gear pulls the cam forward towards the triangular plate. Hi all, I picked up a 1275 (73 Midget) engine for my Morris Minor project car. Since it arrived in four boxes a few parts were missing (so I've discovered) One of these was the small triangular(ish) drive flange which connects the camshaft to the oil pump. A new oil pump and flange were obtained (along with loads of other stuff for a complete rebuild). After assembling the oil pump, camshaft and the triangular camshaft retaining plate I find I have about 1/8" or so of endfloat where the spec is 4 to 7 thou! The retaining plate is... MORE
Your plans pretty much match up with what I am doing, Rick. I have the engine compartment pretty well taken care of as well as the front wheel wells. I used POR 15 on the compartment and the various metal shrouds and brackets. It is supposed to be very tough and it has a nice shine to it. Since my color is black the color match is not a concern. Nelson - Know exactly the stuff your talking about, a freind had the exterior of his brick building blasted and had about a dozen bags left over, I grabbed them before they went into the dumpster and have them gathering dust in my garage. I wasn't sure if it was too abrasive or not to use on the MG, but if you already have used it, guess I'm safe. Jim I'm not sure on this one, but as I've been reading the comments it suddenly came to me. I used to have a Ford Mondeo over here and I'm pretty sure you had to lift that to put it into reverse. Now, as I said, I may well be wrong, but that Mondeo box I think is the same basic 5 speed box as used in the Ford Sierra that preceeded it -and I'm pretty sure that Sierra box forms the basis of a lot of 5 speed conversions. Hi Guys, I decided to bite the bullet and strip the whole car back to the tub rather than do it bit at a time. I am thinking now of getting the whole thing professionally blasted or chemically dipped to save a lot of manual labor. Has anybody got experience with this or a rough idea of the costs involved? Welcome to the list Paul. How long is it going to take? How long is a piece of string? They (being they, I mean people who have been down this path before) reckon that a ground up nut and bolt rebuild of any classic car will take around about 2,000 manhours of work. I'll save you the calculation of that into real terms - its about 5 years of part time (by part time I mean every weekend and evening) work. Have you ever heard of a 5 speed trans that you have to lift up on the shifter to enter reverse? Yes I have , we have one on our pool car fleet, but I'll be blowed which car. Thanx for all your input I'm really no wiser , Wires look the bizz on a show car. And didn't a spoke key come with the original tool set? Chrome wires are just too showy IMHO but probably easier to clean. I'll probably put them (painted)on the Frogeye as I guess I'll be putting more hard miles on the midget. I haven't found a definitive answer yet if painted wire wheels were an original option on the UK AH M1 Sprite It's all reversable though isn't it. Alan "Alan" 31063... MORE
Building on what Duncan said, the book by Horler will list the colors and have some good photos. One place you can see chips/buy paint from the Autocolor library (www.autocolorlibrary.com). Another practical source for me is "Restoring Sprites and Midgets - An enthusiasist guide" by Grahame Bristow. He doesn't list every nut and bolt, but he does show the break down of many systems. Hello everyone, I am a recent buyer of a battered old 1974-1275 Midget and am intending to carry out a total nut & bolt restoration job. Having never tinkered or worked on cars in my life, I dont know how long this intention will last, but at the moment I,m keen as mustard and would like as much help as possible. G'day Paul Sounds like you have a Mini Metro Turbo head gasket. It's hard and black, and in my opinion the very best you can get. Apart from being a denser material, it also has re-inforcing fillets between the cylinders. My race engine runs 13:1 compression, and I have NEVER blown a head gasket. All the guys racing Sprites and Midgets Down Under use this gasket. One guy I know has re-used his 3 times now (he's cheap) and even he doesn't blow them! The Payen part number is TAM1521, at least that's what it is on the packet... MORE
Nope, don't think I have any extra's. My book and engine says that you should look for the carbs & intake manifold from a 65-66 MGB & GT. They & I am running a pair of HS4's and if you cut the manifold (the 65-66 MGB... is A 1798 CC) and slide it together, mine has piece of hose and two hose clamps in the middle, it works just great and you don't notice any thing out of line.
