The ignition switch is giving me problems. It no longer springs back to the on position after starting the engine and the starter doesn't disengage when the switch is manually moved from start to on. I have taken the steering wheel off and am stuck at the plastic cowling surrounding the switch. The turn signal stem won't let me pull out the left 1/2 of the cowling and the right 1/2 seems to be stuck in place also. Any tips on getting the faulty switch out of the column? I must apologize to those who followed my progress report, just don't have the time nor the room anymore to work on my 67 Sprite. It is a 67 Sprite that is torn down and middle of restoration. It has a lot of body work done already and shouldn't take much to finish. The shell and doors were professionally sandblasted to bare metal. (cost over $400 for just that). Car is apart but well cataloged, small parts in Ziplock bags with labels, bigger parts in categorized plastic bins, shell on a dolly, new VB parts used cost over $600.... MORE
Don.... Is the water pump is operable and on the engine and belt hooked up? If so, hook up a hose (tape, whatever) and "feed" the motor thru the thermo cover letting it run out the back (block heater outlet) using a normal hose hooked up to a spigot at low flow velocity? And I wouldn't take a chance on a malfunctioning stadt, either. Go stadtless. Otherwise I have no clue since in summer temps., mine warms up virtually in a heartbeat...really. Hi, Hamondale.... This does seem like overkill with all the excellent lining material we have today for the street, doesn't it? However, once he's got the biasing valve in place, it will sure stop! And the "quicker" you can stop, the "quicker" you can go for a longer period of time in distance. So I think I MAY have a handle on why he is doing this in a street application. You can only get so "hard" on linings before they lose their effectiveness 'cause you can't keep them "hot" enough on the street at "normal" speeds in "normal"... MORE
On the unit I have there are three bend over metal tabs holding the case sections together. Carefully bend them up to pull the unit apart. There may be some resistance at the float shaft end that looks like a slotted screw to pass through the hole, a little cleaning there and you can pull the case apart enough to remove the brass spring. I also rubbed the ends of the spring on fine sand paper and cleaned the case surface around the shaft hole where the spring contacts the case and the surfaces of the round bushing next... MORE
If anybody has installed a Rivergate in a MK II Sprite, what do you do about the adjustment to the metal shifter housing cover and boot so that it looks fairly original and not "butchered" up. Is there another boot out there that you can recommend? This thing wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. Also, if anybody decides to order one, make sure that you know what size crank is in there or you'll get the wrong seal AND they have to know if your car is RHD or LHD. I didn't tell them and got... Nigel, Set the multimeter to resistance and connect one lead to the metal flange of the sender unit and one to the wiring spade. As you raise and lower the float there should be a smooth increase and decrease in resistance reading. Sorry, I forget what the normal resistance reading is bit if the resistance reading varies smoothly then the sender unit is most likely fine. If the unit has been sitting for a long time you may have to exercise it some to break up any oxidation on the surface of the wire wound resistance strip inside the... MORE
Eeg Nope, not used any weld-through primer, as per your experience of it, I've heard it doesn't work too well. I do coat the inside of each panel with primer, leaving enough bare metal to weld to, before I weld them in. As far as seams are concerned, I intend to coat each one with brushable seam sealer after i've applied a few coats of primer. All box sections will then be protected with waxoyl. When you operate the starter, do the lights dim? If so check your battery. When the ignition switch contacts failed on another of my cars, I removed the cowl and put a jumper across the two terminals on the back of the switch after looking at the wiring diagram to establish which colours the relevant wires were. (Workshop Manual) Another indicator that the switch is going (although different contacts) is that the engine will miss a few beats, particularly when the engine is pulling, for example up hill, leading to a bit of Kangerooing. You will probably find enthusiasts who live near to you who would be only too willing to help. Wood & Pickett do a kit for the Mini, it could probably be adapted. Moss and /or Minispares should sell it in the UK. Whether you want to get rid of the manual winder is another thing. Need some help on this. I intended to rebuild my clutch master cylinder so I looked in the Haynes 1275/1500 comic book. It says to remove the pedal box cover remove the cotter pin and pin and than remove the master cylinder nuts. How does someone remove the lower nut without taking off the entire pedal box along with also removing the brake master cylinder. Not so simple a job. Is this the only way to get at the nut. I have a 74 MG Midget, I already know it's been pieced together from SEVERAL different year cars, but I have run all the wires down and come up with two that have no where to go. One is Blue with a female connector on it, the other is Green/Purple with a male connector on it. I have checked the wiring diagrams in the Hayes manual and another English manual (it's red can't think of who it's by) and neither of them show these wires. David... You are absolutely correct on this. It is one thing to go with lighter, wider WHEELS while retaining the stock narrow width tires (80's) in stock size or slightly oversize. It is another thing to go with a wider "footprint", wheel material or width notwithstanding. At this point, you will definitely be changing the "character" of the stock vehicle's handling in terms of "tossability". Absolutely correct IMHO in terms of my personal experience. When I was young I would see old people's workbenches with the tools all hung neatly on pegboard, sometimes an outline of the tool also. Then I thought they were simply compulsive anal retentive. Now that I am 65 I know it is because if there is not a place for everything and you don't put everything back where it came from you will never find it when you need it. David, in my parts manual (origninal B.M.C.) and in my Factory workshop manual, they are called ventilators. Incidentaly, they are also called ventilators in the original sales literature for the Mk2 Midget. "Are wind wings...." "Windows 101" ! :) No, Dave. Quarter lights are "windows" located between side and rear windows on a convertible/roadster soft or hard-top. They can be soft or hard "plastic" or glass. They can be openable and are a permanent part of the part in which they appear, this part not necessarily a permanent part on the car. Like removeable soft or hard tops. Hi, The bulb for the flasher unit, according to my Brown & Gammons catalogue covering Midget 1275 & 1500 and Sprite Mk 4 is part no. 57H382, but I'm sure that any bulb of the right rating with the same fixing method would suffice. As for the green cover on the dash, I can't find it in any of the catalogues or manuals I have. Perhaps you could use a piece of green perspex and glue it in place?
