Nigel- Yes, "easy outs" are screw extractors. Yes, if you break one it is ugly. I never have. Why would you put too much muscle on it and break it? You do need to be careful with the smaller ones, but it is like any other tool. Use common sense. A couple times I have nicked some threads using them, but was able to chase the threads without a problem. My guess is that there may be some "junk" screw extractors out there. I paid the long dollar for my set. Have had them for 15 years. Never broken... MORE
Easy-outs are tools used to extract a bolt that has sheared. You drill a hole down into the bolt, tap the easy out down into the hole, then carefull y turn the easy-out and bolt back out. In reality, what often happens, is th e easy-out continues to enlarge the drilled hole and never really bites enough. Or, worse: the easy-out breaks and then you have something 10 time s harder than the original bolt to try and remove. Hi just found your group.I am restoring a 59 bugeye and would like to know the best way to tilt the hood foreward.MiniMania has a hinge kit for $160 yikes!seems like a lot for a couple pieces of metal and a bolt or two.also whats the best way to latch it? Do you realise that many of us seem to suffer from selective memory loss? I am refering , in this case, to the seat material of our wonderful little cars. Now we are used to modern seat materials that are usually what might be described as breathable, we have this tendency to forget what the original seat materials were like. For instance, if the car was parked in the sun and you sat on it wearing shorts for example, the degree of discomfort could be quite high. ;-) (Mini skirts, I am told, did not help particularly under these... Is it the same manifold on a 1500TC as on a Midget? (or on a Sptifire, come to that?) All the so-called knowledgeable folks' books say the Spitfire had slightly more power than the Midget due to a less restrictive exhaust, because there was more space available under the bonnet for it. Remind me never to take these apart again, what a job getting the rev counter bezel back again. The inner disk just would not drop in, it had sprung out never to go back. Two G clamps and a small hammer persuaded it to reseat. Found a selection of gasket material by the yard to make all new seals. Have tried 12 v 5 watt side light bulbs, much improved but they are bayonet connectors not MES so am working on adaptor. Cap'n It's coming on! I've been seriously hampered by the weather here lately, which hasn't been very conducive to spraying! We had snow here a week or so ago, since then its been milder but with that comes rain and wind; very windy here again today. But I've pushed on doing what I can, and the bodyshell with front panel assembly and both wings in position is now about 90% finished in gloss. Terry, On the several that I have dismantled, they have all had mastic between bezel and glass, O-ring between glass and the next ring in, and an 0-ring between the case and the metal dashboard. I don't think there is supposed to be an O-ring behind the metal reflector ring. It is stepped and fits against the rim of the case, leaving a gap between it and the dial face to let the light through. One tip here is that you should save discarded O rings from the rear hubs as these will fit around the tach and speedo... MORE

Hi I would like to see what speed I am doing in the dark so Speedo is out and apart. 1972 RWA midget Questions Chrome bezel is filled with black gunge at rear, is this the remnants of an 0 ring that seals the bezel to the glass? Is there an 0 ring between the Speedo and dash board? The inside of the Speedo is sky blue from 1 o'clock to 7 o'clock and white for the other half. Is this correct and why? To fix this you are going to have to open up the case and get into the detailed workings. It is pretty delicate stuff in there and parts do wear out. You may prefer to get it to a specialist to recondition. If you do want to sort it yourself you will need to remove the chrome bezel and glass and then undo the two screws on the back of the case. Roger... I had the pleasure to visit the UK back in the late '60's/early 70's so I am not up to date on present "conditions". Wife and I spent most of our time touring Kent (met Bob Tuck on his farm!) and enjoying London, Imperial War Museam and various WW2 airports/towns I'd read about as we came upon them. Guys, I agree. I was one of the lucky ones in that my company wanted me over here and I have no intention of going back. I am now married to a citizen so that does make things easier but dealing with the BICS (New name for INS) is a real pain. All is not lost however H1 visas are available and get issued, also the green card lottery is worth entering. I love Scotland, had the good fortune to visit Edinburgh a few years ago and it's a magical place, the Scots are the friendliest people I've ever come across and the scenery is just breathtaking, Scotland is, in my mind the Jewel in the Crown of the British Isles. All this talk of T.Horlers book on Spridgets made me get my copy out, And I noticed the 1500 RB engines shown in it appear to be painted black with a silver rocker cover, mine isn't, it's a pinkish red metallic colour, not a million miles away from then engine that was in my old 1300 FWD triumph. If it was gold or silver I could understand it, these were recon units. My engine does have remnants of silver paint on the rocker cover though. Alan I really do hate to upset people, and seeing grown men cry isn't a pretty =3D=0D sight, but I'm afraid on this occasion it has to be done, sorry I can't hel =3D=0D p it! I got my copy of this book from a discount bookstore just round the corner =3D=0D from where I used to work.
