Ben, (me again!) It may not be the clutch - it could be the U/Js on the prop shaft. They can make all sorts of odd noises when they are on the way out, including clicks and clangs. Probably most noticeable as you release, and re-apply load as you change gear. Try greasing them for starters and see if the noise changes or goes away. A whole lot easier than gearbox or clutch probles so try the easy things first. Guy "Guy Weller" 31816... MORE

Hi guys, I noticed the other day when driving that when i change gear usually from 2nd-3rd i hear a slight clanging sound from the clutch well i think its the clutch. Clutch release bearing maybe? or.... anyone else got any ideas? Cheers Ben Ben Lawlor 31815... MORE

Bruce, I run a beautiful (I think) set of American Racing wheels on my Midget. They are Chevy Vega hub pattern. I'm going to post pix of the car next week so you can see them if so inclined. From what I've read and heard the biggest tire you can run on the Ro's is 170/70/13. I can tell you from personal experience that 5.5 inch rim and 165/70's will not fit without modifications. On my way back from dropping my kids off at school this morning, I met a guy with a gorgeous 1969 TR6. Turns out his lower back problems are preventing him from fully enjoying the car so he wants to sell it. It's immaculate inside and out AND for those of you who'd ever dreamed of a Sunbeam Tiger or a TR8, it has a professionally installed 350 Chevy engine and auto trans AND a Corvette rear end. The car is a sleeper and looks complete stock until you open the bonnet or start the engine. Anyone interested in... MORE

As I inspected the transmission area on the sprite I noticed an extra hole on each side of the tunnel at about where the shift stick protrudes. Looks like the holes have pop rivet covers, about 6x6 inches, in place. Is this supposed to be or are they likely a PO's access places? cheers, bill b 1969 Sprite (Bilby) /\ /\ o o 0 William Burrell 31630... MORE

hi, Im in the process of pulling the engine from the car (1500) so it can be rebuilt. While it and the box are out it seems like the ideal time to change the box. However, im presented with a dilema. the purpose of rebuilding the engine is so i can run the car in sprints and hillclimbs so the close ratio box is pretty attractive, however, the ford box is still a closer ratio set than the original and has the added attraction of the extra gear for better cruising. Having said that the Moss close ratio box... MORE

Neil, Remember that the taller top gear you can get in the tranny is good for cruising but also allows you to run a higher ratio rear end which will allow better acceleration in sprints and hill climbs and still have enough top speed for highway driving. I used to use the Morris pickup truck diff (5.38:1 if my feeble memory serves) for autocross with great success but I sure needed a taller top gear or overdrive. I suffered on the freeway at about 6,000 rpm at 55 Mph, but it really did scoot through the gears!!!!!!!!!. Cheers, Bob... MORE

Listers - I posted a message a few weeks back about attempting to get a proper title for my 75 Midget, without much luck... Yahooooiiiieeeee ! The title arrived in the mail a couple of days ago! After 4 calls to the local and state DMV offices, I finally talked to someone who new what was going on and gave me the direct line of the lady who handles such things, sent me the proper papers and local police officer inspected the VIN numbers signed the papers and bingo.... Guess it pays to talk to the proper people. Been... MORE

David There's a picture in my August folder in Nigels-71-Midget photo folder where you can just about see where I removed the floor around the trans tunnel - you can just see the weld round it and the new floor. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 31502... MORE

David Aha ! Well thats the other way round. My first piece of advice to you then is to do the inner and outer sills *before* you put in the new floor. Body rebuilds on monocoque cars need to be done around the door gaps - there's a possiblity you'll lock the car into a new shape by welding in the floor before you've done the inner and outer sills and then find the door won't fit properly, or you have problems getting the door to fit. Do the sills first - get the door gaps right - weld... MORE

Nigel I posted the original question and I seem to have confused a few of the guys who were kind enough to take the time to try to help me out. The floor is rotted away from the outside in, I will be replacing both inner and outer sills however the left and right hand floor panels would not (even if welded together) create a new one piece floor, they are not wide enough. The panels are designed to be welded to the centre section of the floor which is under the centre tunnel and never goes rusty. In... MORE

when you say 'butting up under the piece left still........' I presume you don't mean butting up as in a butt joint but overlapping. If it overlaps under the transmission tunnel, doesn't the cross member continue there also? Conversely, if you DO mean a butt joint, isn't distortion still going to be a problem? Pedantic types need to know! Regards David "David Jacobs" 31455... MORE

David Thats a different situation, it doesn't matter if it butts up under the transmission tunnel - it will still lie flat under the crossmember - the problem was getting it to sit flat under the crossmember whilst butting it up under the piece left still attached to the sill. HI Everyone I need help again plz Whats the best way to undo brake lines with out breaking them is heat ok ??? Will the heat hurt the Pressure Differential warning Actuator (4 way brake union) and whats the best way to undo the flex lines from the steel lines without heat??? Thanks Members for all the info i have received already. Great job thanks again ED "nastyboy089" 31436... MORE

Well after posting the message I cooled off and went back out and looked things over. I know that if the pistons open too quickly the engine will get a lot of fuel and not that much air. So I fiddle with the mixture nut and watched the piston when the throttle was opened. The pistons rose but the headers started to glow red! Argghh, I thought I'd timed the cam in better than that. Has anyone had a vernier cam gear slip on them? I don't remember a torque value on the securing screws, it's the Kent gear.... MORE

Thanks to all respondents. This search for the right sized audio system is turning out to be a bit more challenging than first thought. Considering max depth of only 5 7/8" for console mounting, there doesn't appear to be anything out there. Pioneer advertises their units to be 5 7/8" depth, but they don't count the additional 1- 2" for the power supply periphery on the back. Since I want to use the console placement, looks like a CD is definitely out. I'm going to look for a JVC AM/FM cassette that Chris N mentioned. Chris, if you have... MORE

Hi everyone I hope some one can help me I have a 75 midget 1500 with a dual master brake cylinder My problem is i can't bleed the rear brakes no fluid will come out i have no problem bleeding the front brakes Could i have a problem with my master cylinder?? or the pressure differential warning actuator?? and Is there any way i can test my problem. Hi all As discussed in the previous thread my 1500 is totally standard bar the K&N filter, which was fitted and set up by the MGOC on their rolling road. However it has always been a bit hesitant, especially pulling away from cold. I also noticed it yesterday when it was fully warmed up and I was driving along at about 40.Ipressed the pedal down to accelerate and there was a definate hesitation, almost like turbo lag. Naturally I checked under the bonnet to see if some wag had fitted a turbo, but alas not! When I bought the... MORE

Many of the replacement switches that fit in the pedal box are of poor quality. And... to get enought clearance to put the switch in, you need to take the pedal box loose. These might be some of the reasons the PO made alternate arrangements. "Trevor Jessie" 31373... MORE

hi, ever since i got my midget i had always been aware of the brake switch being inside the car right nest to the pedal- i always thought this was kinda strange! But as i have never really 'looked' at anyone elses midget i didn't know NE diffrent!! then the other day i was looking through the old receipts from the car and there was an invoice to the PO charging for a new brake switch and bracket!! Was only eairler that i looked into it and found out that a nice neat little switch is ment to go... MORE

Hi all, just thought id ask you all what u think of putting fiberglass wings on my 1500? Main reason would be they are cheap (relatively) and don't rust. are they any problem of putting fiberglass wings on a midget? Another plus i suppose is that they are lighter thus increasing BHP per ton. OR rather than wings would a whole front end be better? Just wondering probably never get around to it but i like to know all my options! Cheers Ben Ben Lawlor 31342... MORE

Yeah. It probably will handle good that way...:) I live in an area that has steep drive ways and I like my cars "looowww". The two things never mix so that's why Im going air ride. I haven't ran my Midget yet with the air ride suspension. Iv only had the car for about 8 months and 4 of those months its been in my shop being "tricked out". I do have air ride in the front of my 85 supercharged Toyota MR2 and Tokico 10 way adjustable shocks on all 4 corners and the car rides surprisingly very... MORE

Steve, Just a thought.... Take a look at the rear attachment points of the spring. The shackle should slope down rearwards from the mounting bracket to the eye on the spring. I think it is possible with new curved springs to get them fitted such that the shackle slopes forward and the spring eye is in front of the mounting point. Once fitted like this they wouldn't naturally flip over to the correct position. The result is a high ride height and axle moves forward a bit. Guy "Guy Weller" 31334... MORE

Last year when I removed the rear suspension to send the body off to be painted I discovered a broken spring, so I ordered a new set. After I have installed the new ones I get a wheel base of 79.25 instead of 80 and it is riding very high, so high that I cannot attach the rebound straps. I'm out of ideas so I hope someone has some. The snow is almost melted so I need to get in gear with this project. Thanks Steve Quandt "Steve Quandt" 31329... MORE

Just to shed some of my personal experience in this area. I had to tackle this area personally in the last week or so. If you follow some of the parts supplier's diagrams you might end up installing this little pesky item backwards. Best advice is, as always, follow your original repair manual. In my case, it's a Sprite Mark I with a 948 engine. If you stop to think for a moment, and ask yourself, what is the logical purpose for this (oil thrower) item? You will soon come to a quick conclusion that its purpose is to... MORE
