I purchased a 8 of 1975 USA mg midget and have been correcting what the previous owners did to ricky race it. I have talked to the mechanic the previous owners had work on the car about the things I noticed wrong after buying it. The left front end has too much negative camber, thanks PilotBob. The mechanics answer "the owners just replaced tires and did not drive fast" what he meant by fast must have been any thing over 40 MPH. The engine isn't original for the car. Wimpy.... There are 1500 owners who would very much like to be in your shoes with your 1275 driveline set-up, believe me!! When YOUR transmission goes, you can at least exchange it for the readily available, easily installable Datsun 210 conversion for about what it costs for a rebuilt British ribcase at today's prices. AND, you have the benefit of already having the higher geared 3.7 diff. as well (most likely) which came stock in the later 1500 Spridgfires. Jack... Either absolutley should. I am using 175/70x13 on 5.5 Western's (Minilite wannabes) on my '60 BE with no problems, and I've not yet put the 1/4 spacers on the back wheels yet to bring them out a bit to match the track of the wider "disc" front end. All the mounting points should be there. However cheap replacement inner sills may not have the relevant one Mounting points are the inner sill, as far back as you can get, the transmission tunnel also as far back as you can get and on top of the wheel arch. "Jeremy Cogman" 22877... MORE
Good Morning Spridget Land, The right turn signal lamp on my 74's dashboard is burn out and the lens with the little arrow symbol is missing. Darn if I can find a replacement lamp or the little lens cover in any of my catalogues. It would seem like a minor thing but not having a flashing indicator when I am making a right turn is an annoyance and an obsession. Anyone have one or know a source? Its not like you can hear a the flasher unit when doing sixty on the freeway with 16 wheelers on both sides... MORE

I have to give some background prior to my question. Last Wednesday, I was running around in my stock 65 Sprite. Cornering a bit more spirited than most, the car feels nice and in control, no worries. Next day, I am going through town, thinking to myself how good this car has been running. "Thanks Bob & Allen for the education" (You owe me big time, Don May!!:):) Assuming it's a stock 1275 you are looking at Don, the correct model of the 45DCOE for the set-up is 45DCOE13. The DCOE is my favorite performance carb. I got mine initially when the shafts of the stock SU's my PO'd '74 started leaking air and needed rebuilding. I figured what the hell and sprung for the 45DCOE tuned for the stock 1275, instead. Glad I did. Worked just fine right out of the box, with the addition of a "deep" K&N filter. Subsequently, the... My 1973 Midget occationally have starting problems. It will fire and run for a couple of strokes, just enough to disengage the starter, then it stops and the starter turns freely. When it starts (and keeps running) ir runs just fine. I have also noticed that the starter runs slower if the clutch pedal is pressed when attempting to start. First gear is really noisy. The smoothcase uses 20-50 oil only, which is also more noisy. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 22709... MORE
Has anyone done a diff oil seal change in situ? The haynes makes it sound like a doddle. I figure it will be easier in a way because if you have the rear wheels on ramps then the diff will be kept nice and still to assist undoing the flange nut. What do you think? J. jeremy.cogman@... 22703... MORE
Early gearboxes on these cars have plain rather than needle bearings on first gear. If you want to keep things original then you can either get the box rebuilt for a few hundred $ (or do it yourself). Or with a few very minor and reversable mods you can fit a so called ribcase (for obvious reasons) box from the later Sprites and Midgets up to '74. Essentially the same box but with a stronger casing and better internals. If you are going to keep the power more or less std and only use it a few thousand miles... MORE
I have read all your reply's. You guys really know these cars. I have only owned this BE for four months. I Drained the tranny, was very dark almost black. Refilled , with no change. Probably got lots of junk floating around in there...and I agree with the conversion. Curious why it just happens in first gear only though. "If memory serves..." Hi, Dave... That's what I thought I read, also. So figure it's a first gear problem and suggested consideration for Datsun box 'cause you know this Spridget box is probably contaminated with metal anyway considering the "wear" before the gear finally gets really noisey, so just getting a rebuilt "replacement" would probably be the way to go with such a situation.
