Rich... Your fuel pressure setting is correct. There is some falling off in pressure between pump and carb. I've been using low pressure (2.5-4.0) Facets for many moons now with stock float valves...no problems. Same with previous Vizardized Series A with 90hp to rear wheels and Weber "45" except pump was Facet 6psi or so through 2.5 pressure regulator. Stock float valves in this case also. No problems. What pressure does your pump initially put out? What "color" would appear on a NEW set of spark plugs on your car after a hard run, preferably up a reasonably sloped... MORE
Hi folks... it's been a while. I'm still doing too much traveling but I'm trying to work in some time on my 62MK2 between flights, and now I have some questions on front end springs. Anyone know what the original front spring rating (in pounds) for the MK1 or 2 Spridgets and has anyone ever measured the front end weight? I know that the RB Midget front springs are taller, but what is their ratting in pounds? Anyone ever use and have comments about the racing springs that Moss offers, 350 & 400 pound? I have a set of... MORE
Capt'n Bob, You of all people let them go down the wrong path? The windshield does not "Push" the air any more than a fence pushes the wind. The air flows around or over the windscreen depending on the angle of the windscreen just like the water from rain hitting the windshield while you are driving. A slanted windscreen forces the air up into the air above it creating a higher pressure above and less pressure behind the windshield, like the leading edge of an airplane wing. With a top on, the air flows smoothly across the top, lifting... MORE
Well, I tried to look but file did not open. could you e-mail me one? Is it a 1275 with the 69 tranny? stuck in gear, have you tried all the fixes that have been posted? When was the last time it ran o.k.? Bill French HiltonHead frenchww@... 32473... MORE
I've got a 45D4 type dizzy (non-electronic) on my 1275, which Moss sold as a 'performance' item - not sure if the distributor drive is non-standard to mate up with the shaft thing in the 1275 engine, but it definitely fits! (1275 Metros probably had them as well, those that didn't use Ducellier) Being non-standard/original, I can see how it wouldn't appeal to you though, Nigel! Regards David "David Jacobs" 32459... MORE
Well, I thought I had a local buyer for my Sprite, but it seems to not have worked out. I thought I would check the list and see if I can get an opinion on what it might be worth. Itsa: 1969 Sprite(clear Texas title says 1964, but a typo must have occurred way back before I purchased it in New Mexico about 3 or 4 years ago) Number plate (beneath carbs) matches vin on title. You may recall: It's stuck in first gear. Crap!! Stuff I have done: Porsche 914 Seats Roll bar Tonneau cover adapted (lots of... MORE
In the process of removing the rear axle I've run into a bit of a frustration. It looks like it will be necessary to remove the backing plate for the brakes in order to remove the axle fastening for the quarter elliptical spring on my Mk 2 Sprite. After removing the brakes I am unable to turn the large nut holding the bearing in place. Working on the left side I know it will have to be turned clockwise but after flattening the locking washer I am still unable to budge it. Will it be necessary to buy a... MORE
If the switch is in fact dead (it's a normally closed switch), then you need to unbolt the pedal box enough to rotate the switch out after disconnecting the wires. Gerard "gerardchateau" 32406... MORE
David, I think you stated it backwards. Typically the disc has a slightly offset hub with the springs protruding away from the center line. Those springs are what might interfere with the flywheel bolts, so they should be tucked into the clutch cover. Usually, if you put the plate up to the flywheel wrong side to it, the springs will contact the bolts. Just flip it over then. Best, Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 32399... MORE
Keep fiddling with the fulcrum pin. Either it's in too far or not far enough, or not aligned with the flat perfectly vertical. When you get it in correctly. the taper pin should slide into palce with no more tha a slight tap. "joe blxfstz" 32373... MORE
Thank you sir!! and if you would kindly get some liturature from the dealer with photos and specs on the "real deal" that you could send, that would b e wonderful!! Just bolted up my R front suspension-new coil springs, shock, rebuilt kingping, bushings the works. But a question. On the bottom of the kingpin, where it mounts into the pan, I installed the 2 cork washers that came with the kit. Now when I put in grease, it seems to flow out quicker than it did before, on either side of the kingpin. Is this normal? Grease also flows out quicker everywhere on the kingpin where there's a zerk. Is this because there is no hard grease backing things up? Should I be concerned? Plus - those corkwashers seem strange. Would... MORE
That's usually a pretty easy fix. You can try two things, one at a time. Drain out the oil. Then use a tooth brush and solvent to clean out the threads in the housing. Frequently there are little bits of "stuff" there! Clean the drain plug so it has no trash bits in the threads and wrap it with teflon tape, like the plumbers use, and put the plug back in. Does the trick about 90% of the time. For the remaining 5 or 10%, do the hole cleaning bit AFTER you have run a 1/2" pipe tap in... MORE
Some guy with a 76 midget wrote me and asked... I have a 1976 Midget. The car has something on it I can't figure out. There is a cable from the speedometer head to a white box and from the white box to the transmission (for the speedometer gear). My question is the white box. On the back it says "percent of life used" and on my car it is 32. Does this correspond to the mileage on the speedometer? What is the box for? Anybody have an idea? Percent of WHAT life, or WHOSE? David, On an engine with a badly worn rocker shaft it will pump oil under pressure from under the rocker bushes faster than it will drain by gravity down the push-rod holes. Once the level builds up above the ends of the valve guides - which may take a mile or two at medium to high revs, the stem seals on the valves no longer control the entry of oil down the valve guides. Then the blue smoke starts. Guy "Guy Weller" 32331... MORE
Brad, my rebuilt 1275 smoked blue and I followed all sorts of advice from list members to get it right before I finally fixed it. Of many "cures" attemted, the two that made the most difference in my case were: 1. Replacement of the rocker shaft. Too much oil was leaking out of the rocker bushes. It was apparent by running the engine with the rocker cover off. I left the cork gasket seated on the head and let the engine run at fast tickover. It leaked so fast that it soon created a lake on the top of... MORE
Worn rocker gear by itself should not make a huge difference to the amount of oil burnt, except for the fact that there would be more of the stuff sloshing about up there to get sucked down (worn) valve guides. To see if it is worn, you can get a reasonable idea by pushing the rockers against their springs along the shaft from their normal positions - if the shaft itself is worn, you will see/feel a ridge on the underneath (thrust side) and the rockers will have less side-play on the un-worn section of shaft. If you want... MORE
Brad, You can see if your rocker shaft is okay or not by removing the valve cover after the engine is warmed up and restart the engine. If oil is thrown all over the place or runs out of one or more rocker arms in streams then it is worn. If oil isn't thrown all over the place and only a small amount can be seen dribbling down the rockers then it's probably okay. 'Usually' if they are really worn the oil will be coming out fast enough that the drain holes can't keep up with it and you... MORE
Which way is it "almost vertical"? The eye of the spring should be behind a vertical line from the eye of the mounting point. Even if it is only very slightly forward of the mounting point it will prevent the shackle moving into the right angle and the spring will never settle to give the correct ride height. If the shackle is even slanted a little forward then use a pry bar to flip the shackle so that it points rearwards. Do this with the wheels on the ground (or on ramps), not with the axle hanging on the... MORE
Hi Rob could you please pass on any information on fitting fibreglass front , rear and doors as i'am thinking of converting my 1968 mk 4 sprite . Regards Bob Hi Bob My first recomendation is dont! Unless you are a masochist with unlimited time buckets of money and infinite patience don't do it. Now if you are stupid enough to still be reading this the front end is a doodle just take off the wings move the wiper motor (it hangs over the edge of the bulkhead and will foul the bonnet when it is lifted) move the... Rob Batley.... You know....years ago I owned a '67 Sprite and had purchased a Bugeye rear glass clip to "match" the Bugeye bonnet which came on this car when I acquired it. Figured the BE front and rear end with the '67 wind up windows, and fold down top, etc. would be about the perfect Spridget. Before I could get to mounting the rear clip, the car was destroyed in an accident wherin the other guy was at fault, resulting in the aquisition of my current BE. Considering your description of what it took to properly fit the BE... MORE
This might sound like a totaly daft question, but it is a while since I last had the axle off its mount, but is it possible to mount the axle the wrong side of the springs? either that or you have got the rear shakle 'locked' in the wrong position, forward of centre. Listers, I need to sell off some of my spare parts. I have several 948, 1098 and 1275 engine or partial engines to sell. One 1275 is a complete low mileage, clean and running engine. others are rebuildable cores, but pretty much everything I have is degreased and ready for whatever you'd like to use it for (table base?) I also have several MD 266 cams, mostly the narrow lobe variety for use in 948 or 1098 engines. I also have several used headers. all are the 3 into one type. I also have a complete rear clip from... do you mean the nut/2-eared spinner won't loosen, or the wheels themselves won't come off, once the nuts have been removed? Don't forget they have different handed threads on each side! One trick to get the wheels loose is to undo the nut a couple of turns then lower the car back down off the jack and carefully roll it backwards and forwards. This will often break the joint between wheel and splined hub. Regards David "David Jacobs" 32247... MORE
