I now have two original hardtops that I'm going to paint. I have a question, both tops have cracks in the gelcoat. I believe from flexing. The fibeglass is perfect, no cracks whatsoever. What I am wondering, is with those gelcoat cracks, what is the best way to get them ready for paint such that the gelcoat cracks won't propagate into the new paint. Do I need to strip it down to the bare fibeglass? What stipper works the best? Any help would be appreciated. One top will be stock to match the car, the other will be checkered... MORE
If it is the 215 ci all alloy Buick V8 then you can get MG badged rocker covers and twin SUs for it!, it is the exact same engine that became the Rover 3.5 litre V8 and powers most range rovers and the MGB GTV8 hence Moss will sell you some rocker covers with MG cast in them that will bolt striaght on the engine. Although 200BHP stock is proabbly Gross rating, not the modern DIN, probbly more like 150 if you want to use the modern ratings. Even the Twin Plemumn SD1 Rover Vitesse only had 220BHP DIN!... MORE
I also have two tops that have thousands of small cracks/checks in them. They both are painted. I believe they come from flexing as when one person takes it off and moves it around, they are quite flexible. What is the best way to deal with this? How do we avoid this in the future. We can't be the only two people with this problem. Also, I don't know if either one is factory, how do you tell and is a new rear plastic window available, as well as rubber. Listers - The enigine/trans is a 1963 all aluminum Buick V8, 215 ci. (I'm told the 4barrel carbed ones are high compression, something like 11 to 1 and are good for a stock 200hp) The trans is a Borg-Warner T-50, aluminum 5 speed, I think it's from a late 70's Chevy V8 Monza. The added frame rails are 2" square steel tube, not sure I needed that much added to the sides of the original frame rails (probably could have used a 1" x 2" on it's side) but boy did it ever stiffen up after they were installed.... I have saved many of the messages of this group in folders. I figure these categorized files will be very helpful as I continue my Sprite restoration. Not trusting the computer to be crash-proof, I would like to backup these files to a CD. I cannot figure any way to get Outlook Express to allow me to do this. Well, Dave.... The biggest/best change you can make is to bring up the compression ratio next time you have the head off, unless you're taking it apart for piston/ring replacement. Taking the head from 21cc down to 19cc should be good for just under 8.5-1 and were you to go to 8.8-1 pistons next time around, the combo would be good for between 9.0-9.3-1 or so. You could take the head down to 16.4cc but now you're down to min. thickness for the head (strength, cooling, head-gasket issues, etc.). Besides mechanical stuff, better breathing will help. hi all im new here so i thought i would introduce myself. my name is David i live in Georgia . i own a 1970 mg midget that has been modified to race in autocross. it has a 2.8 chevy v6 with 12.1 comp. a solid lift .454 lift cam a edlebrock intake with a holley 390cfm carb and a 175 shot of nitrous. its fun and fast. im goin to rebuild it and put it back on the street (sleeper) . i like everyones pics and comments keep up the good work . I think GTX is Castrol's motor oil. If you use Castrol brake fluid, it is LMA. Assuming your brake hydraulics have been rebuilt since the car left the factory, any brand DOT 3 will be fine. I have a friend who makes his living restoring british cars, and he always uses the cheapest DOT 3 he can buy. Never had a problem. "joe blxfstz" 36331... MORE

You might be able to pot a plant in it Matthew, but I honestly doubt it. The plant would most likely fall through to the ground. This car could be entered in the "most original" section of the next concourse. Check out the patina on those seats! avagoodday Colin "Colin Dodds" 36296... MORE

FWIW, if you still have yours (which I assume are broken and twisted) bend them back into shape, and weld a piece of strap steel across the open back side of the hinge. It boxes them in, never to distort again. Did this on th e 68 when it was in for paint, and they are still fine. Brad "" 36270... MORE

I just got a sabelt three point racing harness at a british swap meet with the intention of fitting it to the stock seat belt mounting points on my 1971 mg midget. I got home and noticed a small problem. The belt that extends behind the seat to the rear point is too long. Is it at all reccomended to alter the length of a seat belt in such a way that it requires sewing? Would such alterations still be safe? "gan5ub91179g" 36225... MORE

I always thought these were painted silver with black detail. I am going to get mine shot blasted then stove enameled. You can buy the masks to do the black detail but I have been told that they are difficult to position and paint tends to creep under the edges. Perhaps someone who has done it can advise. I was wondering if anyone could give me some information. I have a 1977 Midget. It has the rostyle wheels. I think I would like to refurbish these back to their original appearance. I know the trim rings and small hubcap were chrome. But, were the wheels simply black and silver-grey paint? I have showed pictures I found on the internet to my friend who does auto body painting.
