Terry =A3100 a side is incredibly cheap, I've seen quotes by 'restoration special is=3D=0D ts' of about =A31500 for both sides. As is always the case, a simple job of replacing the sill turns into someth =3D=0D ing far more sinister! Pleased for you! Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 26180... MORE

Rob One of the biggest advantages in doing it your way is that you can do as little or as much work as you want, when you want. Faced with a stripped car sitting in your garage and mountain of work ahead of you, the task can quickly become very daunting indeed. Let's face it, situations change, who knows what lies ahead? The last thing you want if your situation changes is an empty shell sitting in your garage - totally immovable! I think that's part of the reason why so many people give up on restorations part the... MORE

David No, thats not what I'm saying, but I can see why you might interpret in that way. What I meant was when you consider the amount of time thats already gone into this project (mostly on rebuilding the bodywork and preparation for paint) if I'd used a Heritage Shell (the body rebuilding stage would not apply, and the preparation for paint would be minimal) the stage I'm at now (which is about 3/4 the way to finishing in terms of the total amount of work) would be equal to about 1/4 of the way to finishing (in terms... Rob Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. I think you are suffering a little from the 'grass is always greener' syndrome though : ) If it's any consolation, I think you did the right thing as well ! I can't tell you how many times I've muttered under my breath the well known phrase 'never again' never again' it's almost like a mantra to me now. Of course it's nice to be able to fully strip the car, rebuild/repaint and reassemble it, that has to be the ideal, but let me tell you it is by far... MORE

Nigel, Congrats on the progress. I am jealous. I decided after much advice to tackle my car as a moving project and do the mechanical work first without completly stripping the car like you. Though everyone who gave me advice says I did the right thing I would probably do a strip and rebuild if I had to do it over again. The car runs OK now but with 4 colors (colours) of paint and some interesting body sections I sure wish it looked as good as some of the British cars I've seen. I think having the car... MORE

Hi guys Quick update on the restoration progress. At last ! ! ! ! I've been able to put some colour gloss on the underside, can't describe how pleased I was to finally see some colour going on after so long. The car is currently lying prostrate on its side while I put the colour on the top half. I shall turn it over and paint the bottom half very soon. The intention is, to get the underside finished, then re-assemble the suspension components and get the car movable on its wheels. I'll then be able to wheel it... MORE

Hi guys I'm about to paint my rear axle, which I'm assuming is gloss black like most of the other suspension components. The question is, is the differential carrier /cage also painted black or left in its natural silver alloy finish? Thanks in advance . . . Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 26169... MORE

Strictly speaking these are sidescreens. Side curtains were standard for a while and were just extensions to the hood with no rigid structure or sliding 'glass'. www.ahspares.co.uk do replacement units. Moss do pastic and seals. "Jeremy Cogman" 26155... MORE

"When you think about it, I'd say I was about 3/4 of the way to finishing it now, and if I'd used a new Heritage bodyshell I would be about 1/4 of the way to finishing it!" Nigel, I'm scratching my head trying to work this one out; do you mean there's 3 times as much to do with a re-shell compared to a rebuild? (or is it 9 times? my maths isn't too hot this late at night!) David "David Jacobs" 26175... MORE

Vicky Brit sells the pieces if you would want to do a rebuild yourself. Haven't tried them myself but plan on re-doing the side curtains for my 62 Sprite in the near future. Nelson "Nelson Wittstock" 26153... MORE

Ah but Robert, I dont need the 850, now if I had thought to do this before I bought and rebuilt the new 1098 head I wouldnt have to sell the 850 but since I didnt, I do. Maybe it I could blame it on the fumes:) Bob MTGBRKR1@... 26122... MORE

The original one was plastic. Over the ten years my car was a daily driver water seeped under it and the colors faded a bit and I purchased a new replacement which is also plastic and will be installed when I reach that point in my current restoration, Tim. Actually I bought the replacement 30 years ago when I started my restoration. Since that summer my Sprite had been hibernating until I restarted working on it last summer. Well....Big Bob.... I cannot source this engine number but... "ass-u-me" ing a high compression 948, the U standing for remote change gearbox "over here". A standard set of Spridget 1.25 SU's with AN needles and blue springs should work very well, I would think. Thing is, you would want this on the better flowing Cooper twin intake manifold if at all possible instead of the stock Spridget (worse flowing) type. And then, the carb mounting angle might be just different enough that use of the Cooper intake manifold might require a little fetteling under there to get proper clearance... MORE

HI GUYS! I HAVE BEGUN TO RESTORE AN 1960 MK1 FROGEYE. THE ENGINE IN THE CAR SEEMS TO BE AN AUSTIN A40 OR A50 WITH A SINGLE ZENITH CARB. THE CARB IS TOO HIGH TO CLOSE THE BONNET SO I WAS WONDERING IF I COULD SWAP TO TWIN SU CARBS. I GOT MY HANDS ON A SINGLE MINI SU CARB WITH MANIFOLD WHICH FITTED PERFECTLY BUT IT WAS STILL A LITTLE TOO HIGH. ARE THERE MINIS WITH TWIN SU CARBS AT AN ANGLE OR EVEN A SINGLE SU OFF A MORRIS MINOR THAT WOULD SUIT MY CAR? REGARDS, ROBERT... MORE

Hello, I have a refinished 850 head for a mini, however, it came on the 1098 engine in my bugeye. Confused,... me too. Seems that when I bought the car I didnt check out the head casting number to make sure that it was in fact a 1098 head. Compression was good, Nor did I check out the casting number before I had the head resurfaced, put in ALL new 1098 valves, springs and guides. Now I have a new 1098 head( checked the casting number this time) but need to sell the modified 850 (compression when it was... MORE

Hi Graham Welcome to the list and to MG ownership. To be honest, I found the Owners club a bit of a rip off, but thats just my opinion. Roche Bentley seems to have built a massive empire there, and it's way too commercial for my liking - I always thought Owners Clubs were meant to get the best deals for their members and work on their members behalf, not try and fleece them every moment they get, which is how I feel MGOC behave. I much better club to join would be the one sponsoring this site -... MORE

Hi Guys Just bought a 77 Rubber Bumper Midget to restore, have done other cars before, but this is the first MG, could anyone tell me of a good supplier of spares and repair panels in the UK. Thanks Graham. ps I am going to join the MG owners club. "x192000" 26099... MORE

I do have one but on a sill that is on the car I am worried about using it in case it dents too much of the sill and causes paint damage. Should have done this before they were welded to the car, I know! I know! I KNOW! Terry "terry.isherwood" 26101... MORE

A fellow lister, Steve is kindly sending me a template. I take your point and will try it on a bit of scrap first. Getting that drill to go in dead right is not easy. Did you use a small sharp drill first? A battery drill will allow slow speed to start with, that is what I will use first. Also I have some centre drills from a lathe so I will experiment with them and let you know. A centre punch will distort the sill and damage the paint. A straight edge will show if I managed to... Bob I don't know of any, and I think you're unlikely to find any. Having said that, it can be done. There was a company in England making Frogeye bodyshells from new heritage bodyshells, so it is possible. The only other company I know doing anything like this is - http://banmoco.co.uk/sprint/ But this is based on a mini, and uses fibreglass panels. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 26059... MORE

Very awesome... Things are looking up: Allen as found a new job, as has Gerard, who thru same found an excellent paint shop in his area, who's owner owns a Spridget and does LBC's.......... while Ginger is about to meet a guy who is president of the local sports car club and restores MG's. This is good. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 26030... MORE

Dot 4 it is then. OHH and guess what. I found out that a guy I play softball with has a brother who..::drumroll:: RESTORES MG'S and wants me to bring mine out so he can help me. He's also the president of the British car club here. How awesome is that!! He's even got his own paint booth. I've died and gone to heaven. "Virginia" 26012... MORE

Hmmm, could be several things. With these plastic filters, as I recall, the fuel flows into the centre of the filter element and outwards so you don't see when it's full of clag. T hat said, you can drive on long cruising stretches fine. IT could therefore be the fuel pump. This is (if it is as standard) mounte d under the 'rear seat' and has a crude (but effective electro-mechanical m echanism akin to a doorbell. IT contains a set of electrical points which detoriarate over time which can lead to the pump 'sticking'. Often a bang on... MORE

Jeremy is correct, Gingerino... Any of those will work, color notwithstanding. LMA is possibly preferred but it's not the only stuff that will work just fine...DOT 3 or DOT 4, the latter preferred. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 26009... MORE
