Guy Weller asks, "Do I need a flame suit?" No. We buy in vast quantities. SUV's aside, our oil consumption alone for commercial transportation, including our airline (both public and corporate) for one day is unreal, relatively speaking, So, relatively speaking we get low, low prices accordingly. If the average joe is already paying a 48% tax rate, then funding isn't the problem. How we are spending what we have IS. Tax or no tax, our government would find OTHER ways to spend it. This then is the real problem...accountability for the bucks and exactly where they're going. But... MORE
The Morris minor engine will bolt straight in and sit on the original mountings as log as you still have them! However there are some minor (?) differences, but very few of these will prevent the car form driving. You will have to fit an electric fuel pump as the original 948 had an AC mechanical pump driven from the crank shaft, the Morris minor had an SU electric pump, and so the block will not have the hole in the side to fit the mechanical pump. The minor engine will be one of three sizes. 803cc in which... MORE

Tim, As others have already pointed out your rims should be silver in color. The 'Concours' guys say PPG Delstar Acrylic Enamel DAR 2593X H (Silver Poly) is 'the' correct color to use. Or if you are not interested in being absolutely 'correct' you can use Krylon metalic silver followed by a coat of Kyylon clear the next day. The difference between the two (Krylon vs. PPG) is minimal and would take an "expert" to tell the difference. The same as the brakes, funnily enough.:-) but, daft as it sounds, it depends what is in there. Some people put in silicone fluid, but note the comments of other listers on this in earlier posts, but it is most liely to be the standard disc brake fluid which is DOT 4 these days. It used to be special girling disc brake fluid when the car was new, because that would withstand higher temperatures than the then standard drum brake fluid! Until I get the transmission from the 68 repaired, I have dug through the extras in shed. I started with the latest one that came out of a 65 Midget, that had not been on the road in over 20 years. The shifter would not move, and the input shaft was almost locked. I put an old yoke on the back and gave it a bit more pressure and got it to move. I forced the shifter into all gears, and got a nice positive, firm movement on front and rear shafts. The thing that concerned me was the... MORE

mine used to stick in first (the lever used to go 'too far' and it wouldn't come back without a lot of force) and I tracked it down to a worn plunger in the first/second gear assembly. (see factory manual fig F5 item 1) I think the plunger is meant to hold the gear in position on the hub, while that particular gear is selected, but the end on mine was worn down so it no longer had a smooth radius which allowed everything to move too far and then made it difficult to disengage first. You'll need to... MORE
Chris... I have no personal experience with the 1500 motor. Only the prior Series A 1098 and 1275, and damn little with the 1098! However, it is generally accepted by most that the Series A 1275 is a more bulletproof (tougher) engine than it's later Spitfire 1500 factory replacement, as well as being far more "tuneable". However, from everything I've heard from others (on this list) that do own and drive stock 1500 motors, they perform just fine in normal street driving. Only complaint I've heard mechanically (and I've heard this argued) is that as the crank wears and... MORE

Hi, Bree... More specific information would be required in each case for accurate answers, Bree. With respect to the brakes... are you making an assumption, here? Air just does not get into the brake system "automatically" or "overnight"...unless you've suddenly developed a hydraulic leak wherein air displaces fluid which has leaked out or you have suddenly developed a master cylinder or other mechanical problem(s) within the system. Otherwise, besides low brake fluid (when was the last time this was topped off?), worn brake pads are most likely the first place I'd look with a suddenly "soft" pedal (when was... MORE

Kevin.... With respect to the picture of the crankcase ventilation system at the carbs.....the system does not appear to be "pinched off" from what I THINK I see. The large hose from the front cannister on the timing chain cover appears to be clamped to a non-stock "Tee" fitting from which smaller hoses are clamped that run to the crankcase emissions breather ports on each carb. Perfectly normal set-up assuming these hoses are not clogged. Take the hose off at the cannister, clean the end and blow through it. With some restriction (the "exhaust holes" in the carbs are... Electric fuel pump. If you have a stock one, it will be located above the rear axle on the right side. Turn your key and and see if that is the area of the noise. You might have a have a solid state replacement which never shut off and make that sound constantly, whereas the stock Lucas will shut off when the floats fill up. Gentleman, At the risk of taking this discussion in a new area I would ask only this. What the hell do I do now? I've gone and replaced stock fasteners with Grade 8 on driveshaft and other hardware in the possibly mistaken belief that Grade 8 was Great. Do I go back and replace, say prayers, die in a wreck? Okay, ED - Here's the story: Grades 5, 8, etc are American designations which were never used in England. I don't know, and you don't either, what strength bolts and in which applications were used in cars of long ago. Maybe some of them were not very strong, but I can assure you that some were very strong. They were often not marked since their use was controlled by part number, and one would have to refer to the parts drawings and the old British Standards to find out exactly what they were. That said, bolts in critical safety-related... MORE
Preferrably factory original. However, grade 8 is available at any decent hardware store, and is likely strong enough. Maybe grade 5 is strong enough too, but I wouldn't want to take that chance to save less than $2 per car. "Jeffrey Holmes" 25522... MORE
Jeff... I don't think saving bucks was ever this lister's priority...and you actually confirm this considering the very minor difference in cost between 5's & 8's. Rather... .I think he's looking for the "right" or "best" bolt to use and is looking for sound advice from someone who "knows" what factory original was in these respects. Cap'n.
