The fuel pump is a new SU one so I would assume that it is set for SU carbs. Is the pressure adjustable or do I have to use an external regulator?. The needles hold pressure until the engine is started and the it starts overflowing. I've order some standard jets to replace the Grose ones. Martyn meastwood1@... 32599... MORE
Jens... Whew!! Glad you found the problem and it's a "cheapo" fix. A new engine will give around 75psi cold and this will drop to about 65-70 @ 3,000 rpm when hot. Even this (when hot) is too high. Shorten the spring until you get the above figures for a start. Then purchase an "oil pressure regulator" and fit this instead, using the aforementioned spring. The regulator will not affect the idling oil pressure, just the max pressure. Set initially to 60 @ 3,000rpm "hot" then as the engine wears over time/miles, you can "dial up" the max, keeping... MORE
I'm installing Grose jets into my HS2s and if I set the float to the right height per the manual I get fuel dumping from the bowl vent. What is the correct height to shim the Grose jet to? I've never had a problem with the standard jets before. Martyn "Martyn Eastwood" 32558... MORE

Oh... You're right across the Sound from me (Stamford, CT), Mike. So I guess I know the temperatures you're running in, eh? :) Well, you've definitely got the right oil for the season for sure, and an excellent brand at that. And you haven't got an oil cooler thermo- stat (oilstat) problem 'cause you've got no oil cooler, so we'll forgoet about this as a possible source for low pressure. OK...we'll await word on the accuracy of the "sender" for the light. BTW...from the TriumphTune Performance Manual, 5th edition by Terry Hurrell (Spitfire engines)..... "For all models it is... MORE
G'day Nelson Well I wouldn't go as far as Biff. Standard is 7" and with anything more than .060" oversize (1/16") you run out of rear brake adjustment WELL before the linings wear out. In Oz we can get oversize linings (thicker material on the shoe) that will allow us to go to about .080" oversize drums, but I know in some countries o/s linings are not available. Now you may think that the rear brakes don't do much anyway, so this isn't really a problem. But consider this. The front discs will only work when there is pressure... MORE
Don;t know if this is any use.. but the shell I am rebuilding has original BL sills with the holes already drilled for the letters, and it is in Brightwalton, and in fact till recently was on little Beedon Farm. Currently it is in the process of being flatted down for paint, so if you want to make a template from it we might be able to arrange something! Stewart "Ford Prefect" 32516... MORE

Thanks to all that answered. Now for the next phase. The Autometer Phantom fuel level gauge that it looks like I am going to use is rated as 240 ohms empty & 33 ohms full. Methinks that this gauge with the stock Midget sending unit will read full before its really full and empty before its really empty. Or are the resistance values close enough that it wont make a noticeable difference? They offer a matched "universal" sending unit that hopefully I don't need. Thanks again. I've got a 45D4 type dizzy (non-electronic) on my 1275, which Moss sold as a 'performance' item - not sure if the distributor drive is non-standard to mate up with the shaft thing in the 1275 engine, but it definitely fits! (1275 Metros probably had them as well, those that didn't use Ducellier) Being non-standard/original, I can see how it wouldn't appeal to you though, Nigel! Regards David "David Jacobs" 32459... MORE
Hi guys Whilst clearing through some of my 'stuff' to do with the car, I've come across this. It's a NOS Lucas Electronic Ignition Model 45DM Distributor and AB14 Amplifier, which I beleive is a straight swop for the 45D dizzy as used in the 1500's. It's new old stock - never been used and comes with all the bits and fitting instructions. I'm probably going to sling it on ebay, as it's no good to me or my 1275. Anyone know what kind of money this is worth? tia Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 32450... MORE
Well, I thought I had a local buyer for my Sprite, but it seems to not have worked out. I thought I would check the list and see if I can get an opinion on what it might be worth. Itsa: 1969 Sprite(clear Texas title says 1964, but a typo must have occurred way back before I purchased it in New Mexico about 3 or 4 years ago) Number plate (beneath carbs) matches vin on title. You may recall: It's stuck in first gear. Crap!! Stuff I have done: Porsche 914 Seats Roll bar Tonneau cover adapted (lots of... MORE
In the process of removing the rear axle I've run into a bit of a frustration. It looks like it will be necessary to remove the backing plate for the brakes in order to remove the axle fastening for the quarter elliptical spring on my Mk 2 Sprite. After removing the brakes I am unable to turn the large nut holding the bearing in place. Working on the left side I know it will have to be turned clockwise but after flattening the locking washer I am still unable to budge it. Will it be necessary to buy a... MORE

Strange??? Not at all...machines and their various parts eventually wear out all the time, George. Part of "life"!! :):) OK...seriously.... probably a diode gone "bad"...as in worn out and maybe time for replacement. Others will offer other fixes which may solve the problem short of "exchange" for new or rebuilt unit though. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 32432... MORE

It's part of the bolt-on filter head. The only one I have ever seen is on the canister type, not the spin-on. I have an engine from a '69 Midget and it was standard equipped with the cannister type. The sensor is not present, so it must have been done away with by the time the spin-on type was implemented. I know this was original, because I pulled it from a car in 1970 when it was less than a year old (wrecked). Gerard "gerardchateau" 32367... MORE
Just bolted up my R front suspension-new coil springs, shock, rebuilt kingping, bushings the works. But a question. On the bottom of the kingpin, where it mounts into the pan, I installed the 2 cork washers that came with the kit. Now when I put in grease, it seems to flow out quicker than it did before, on either side of the kingpin. Is this normal? Grease also flows out quicker everywhere on the kingpin where there's a zerk. Is this because there is no hard grease backing things up? Should I be concerned? Plus - those corkwashers seem strange. Would... MORE

Brad, my rebuilt 1275 smoked blue and I followed all sorts of advice from list members to get it right before I finally fixed it. Of many "cures" attemted, the two that made the most difference in my case were: 1. Replacement of the rocker shaft. Too much oil was leaking out of the rocker bushes. It was apparent by running the engine with the rocker cover off. I left the cork gasket seated on the head and let the engine run at fast tickover. It leaked so fast that it soon created a lake on the top of... MORE
The 68 STILL burns oil. From cold, the first 5 miles are just little puffs, then it goes into James Bond mode. Not full time, it comes and goes. I tried our shop mechanics idea to determine if the rings are seated. I have the head off, so I put 1" of oil on top of each piston. The oil has not dropped hardly at all in 1 1/2 hours. I can tell from the head, which chambers were burning oil, and the one that was not, has the most significant amount of seepage, almost 1/8", the others are... MORE

Rob Check out your rear spring shackles. I bet they're pointing towards the front of the car - pos. up to 45 deg forward of vertical. You need to get them flipped so that they're pointing 20 - 30 degrees BACK from vertical ie towards the rear of the car. BTDT! - I used a stout broom handle to lever mine back - followed by three huge paving slabs in the boot / trunk for three months to settle the springs while the rebuild continued. I am in the middle of changing the front suspension on the 68. I am catching my breath, and allowing the spring pans and disc brake backers to dry from being coated with fresh paint. Thank you to Peter for the new shocks, I will have the cores on their way to you this week. Btw, I was missing the bolt on the right shock that keeps the trunion bolt from turning, I hope this isn't a big issue. Just Ed, the parts are great, everything is going on fine!!!
