Toyperson!! I have no reason to think the Mikuni isn't a superb little carb considering they're everywhere on bikes but, the Weber kit already set up for the stock Spridget 1275 is no problem and will give you more of that fuzzy warmth you're looking for when you put your foot in it...BTDT and no set-up problems, either (as long as the engine is reasonably "healthy" to begin with!:). Is the wiring loom installed in the car? if so, where is the general location of these mystery wires/connectors? In the absence of the above info, BS AU7a is the standard for wiring colour codes and says: Green/Purple - Stop lamp switch to stop lamps (or stop lamp switch to lamp failure unit) this will probably have a female spade connector at the switch end and a male bullet to connect to the short bit of wire at the lamp end. of course it could also be Light Green/Purple, in which case its Flasher unit to flasher warning light... Brad, I can't comment directly on your question, but some things I know (or think). Weber side drafts aren't much fun to try to tune and keep in tune. If I were going to upgrade the carbs on an A- series, I'd go with twin 1-1/2 or a single 1-3/4 SU. Easy to tune and parts are no problem. I did once convert an Elan from twin Strombergs to a single side draft SK, which is basically a Weber copy. It ran like stink, but I ended up buying many dollars worth of jets, air bleeds, emulsion tubes, ect,... MORE
Watching the end of a real 'downer' of a movie. On the Beach. Managed to watch them destroy several late 50's LBC's and other sports types. Q's for the group. What was Fred Astaire driving? In the last scene.. What type Austin was in the scene with Ava Gardner? Wonder if Austin paid advert $ for the nice shot of the dash with Austin displayed?? Really was a major depressive flick. Still, nice shots of vintage machines. Chuck n tx "charles roche" 23025... MORE

G'day all If you want production info about your car (build date, colour, engine number, even sometimes key number, etc) then you probably need to get a Certificate from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust. But it will cost you. Click here for details. http://www.healey.org/production.shtml avagoodday Colin "Colin@SpriteParts" 23015... MORE
Looking for a schematic of a stock factory installed radio. Would anyone know the model number or the manufacturer of the BMC radio offered as an accessory in a 1965 Spridget? Don "Don May" 23020... MORE
Try the British Motor Heritage Website for starters. You can resgister your car and get info on VIN numbers. Rob C 75 Midget robbiesg@... 23003... MORE
David... You are absolutely correct on this. It is one thing to go with lighter, wider WHEELS while retaining the stock narrow width tires (80's) in stock size or slightly oversize. It is another thing to go with a wider "footprint", wheel material or width notwithstanding. At this point, you will definitely be changing the "character" of the stock vehicle's handling in terms of "tossability". Absolutely correct IMHO in terms of my personal experience. One should read up on "handling" before doing upgrades involving wider footprints on suspensions originally intended for for more narrow "footprints" in term of what... MORE
I just installed 175 x 13 on 5.5 inch mags on my 75 and had clearance problems. I had to grind off the inner fender lip on the rear wheel arches and grind a 1 inch taller front wheel cutout. Your car may differ as the stock wheels aren't as wide. Hope this helps. Rob C 75 Midget (back on the road after replacing a bad U joint I installed) robbiesg@... 22999... MORE
David, in my parts manual (origninal B.M.C.) and in my Factory workshop manual, they are called ventilators. Incidentaly, they are also called ventilators in the original sales literature for the Mk2 Midget. I always called them quaterlights, but according to my other parts books, quaterlights are what they are called at the back of the window on four door cars. R. "Roger Stinson" 22933... MORE
midgetSpriter's, I've been trawling the lists for an answer to what seems to be an eternal struggle of getting my Standard Block 1275cc Midget (1970) to run in a reasonable fashion. I've read with interest a number of suggestions and am even more confused as to what the right thing to do in regard to getting this car to run with todays fuels. I've tried the full complement of fuels and am currently running with Premium Unleaded. The engine has been recently rebuilt with the addition of hardened valve seats so I guess I should at least have some... MORE
I've just purchased a '66 Sprite. I need to install seat belts and would like to know whether all of the mounting points for a 3-point system are already in place or whether modifications need to be made. If mods are required, is there a place where I can get step-by-step diections? TIA Herman "hermanfarrer" 22874... MORE
Don, Have been following your discussion of mystery mods. This may help. It sounds like your 74 has twin carbs. In 75 they went to the single Zenith and the third rubber hose from the canister hooked up to a compression fitting on the back or firewall side of the carb near the bottom. It may be that the emissions equipment was retrofitted. FWIW Rob C 75 Midget robbiesg@... 22781... MORE
Actually, Bob... Number of carbs notwithstanding, it's probably the same system they used on the single carbed '75, slightly modified for the different engine and/or single carb. set-up and/or closed loop fuel system. However, your input gives us the reason for the compression fitting in the first place...I was not at all sure how it figured into the system, as you may have guessed! And while I do not recall it being a part of the emissions stuff I pulled off my previously owned '74, most likely it was there, in the same place as Don May finds it... MORE
Hi Bob, The restrictor inserted in the hose from the oil separator is a modification and not a stock part rather a jerry rig piece of a standard plumbing compression fitting he used to restrict the line, so it was not an official California set up. All I know to do is return it to the direct hose and see how it runs. Although curiosity leads me to wonder why he did it. If I recall correctly in 74 model year the pancake looking PVC valve on top the intake manifold was deleted and the Y connector to the... MORE
Fortunately the carbs I have are older than the car. Emission mods are relatively few and easily dealt with. Thanks for all the info. Rob C 75 Midget robbiesg@... 22774... MORE
Agree, but it is a very simple step to replace the "Waxstat" jets with standard jets. Not too expensive either. A worthwhile mod. Guy "Guy Weller" 22771... MORE
Once again faced with mystery PO modifications. These have to do with the emission controls. First, particularly on California cars, one must find a proper diagram of the system, something the weak of heart should not attempt from a Haynes Manual. The car in question is a 74 Midget I assume with a stock 1275 First discrepancy . . . The manual, if correct, shows a hose from the valve cover to one of three hose connections on top of the evaporation canister, check . . . that is there. Another hose goes to the gas tank vapor collection... MORE
Hi all: I have a really nice 1964 Beach F Vee Mk 5, serial number V-16 that is monoposto legal (fan, generator, new Dunlops with z-bar rear suspension) and with two races on a fresh motor that I would like to swap for a Spridget Vintage racer (anything from spec sprite on up to an H, G or F Prod car). I have been asking $5800 for the Beach, but would consider an offer in the mid to low $5K range or preferably a Spridget trade. If you have ever wanted to run an open wheel car here is... MORE
Hello out there in Midget land, Been following the discussion on Weber carbs and thought I would get advice on a carb switch I am planning. I have a 75 with a stock 78 motor (the original was toast after 7 years of sitting under a tarp) and am thinking of trading the Zenith for the twin SU setup. Seems like a no brainer as it's nearly twice the air flow of the Zenith ace and was standard in the UK for my year. Would appreciate the thoughts and experiences of any Midget listers on this plan. Rob C. ..... If he double 1.5 SU's were standard for the same engine in European trim, I'd do it and put the Zenith on Ebay in a heartbeat! I think Larry Macy did this with his 1500? Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 22757... MORE
I have to give some background prior to my question. Last Wednesday, I was running around in my stock 65 Sprite. Cornering a bit more spirited than most, the car feels nice and in control, no worries. Next day, I am going through town, thinking to myself how good this car has been running. The thought crosses my mind, I wonder what will go wrong next, so that I hopefully can beat it to the punch. No such luck, within a mile of that thought, my left rear tire blows out. I am 1/4 of a mile from a... MORE
"Thanks Bob & Allen for the education" (You owe me big time, Don May!!:):) Assuming it's a stock 1275 you are looking at Don, the correct model of the 45DCOE for the set-up is 45DCOE13. The DCOE is my favorite performance carb. I got mine initially when the shafts of the stock SU's my PO'd '74 started leaking air and needed rebuilding. I figured what the hell and sprung for the 45DCOE tuned for the stock 1275, instead. Glad I did. Worked just fine right out of the box, with the addition of a "deep" K&N filter. Subsequently, the... Don... Dave Vizard's excellent book goes into the "differences" in good detail. Usually, the Weber sidedraught carbs. are utilized along with other performance upgrades such as cam, inlet valve size increase, flowed heads, etc., though they can be used on the stock mechanically sound motor, the benefit in the latter case mostly confined to more "quick response" rather than a true "power" increase due to scads more aiflow available by larger throats. The operative word in the foregoing is "mechanically sound". The engine in question has got to be developing good vacuum for the Weber is a "fixed venturi"... MORE
