Colin No that statement "Bugeye's never came with British Racing Green as a colour option." is not 'incorrect'. As far as I am concerned Bug/Frogeyes made in England at the factory either for export or home market use did not come with British Racing Green as an OE factory painted colour option. Neither did the Bug/Frogeye's that were sent to Australia leave this country painted as British Racing Green. If you look at the factory colour schemes for Bug/Frogeye's you will not see British Racing Green as a colour option. Now, whatever the Australians did to the cars when... MORE
G'day all And sorry Nigel - BRG was a standard colour for Bugeyes in Australia. The cars assembled here came in as CKD (Completely Knocked Down) and painted in grey primer. They were painted here in four standard colours, after four European national racing colours: Rhiems Blue (France) Monza Red (Italy) Nurburg White (Germany), and British Racing Green (duh). The Australian ID plates on the firewall were stamped with the car model, body number, engine number and colour. We have quite a few on the Register that were (and many still are) British Racing Green. Sometimes shortened on the... MORE
A racing friend, sadly no longer with us, said that green was adopted as the racing colour for Great Britain. But green was said to be an unlucky colour, as it angered the Gods, (or the Demons!) so the paint manufacturers made their greens so dark they were almost black, so as to fool them into thinking it was black. The British got their green cars, and the Gods were no longer angered!! So, basically, any shade of green is considered to be BRG. Personally, I prefer the darkets of all of them: Jaguar British Racing Green. Margaret South... MORE
The 'original' BRG first appeared on Napier racing cars sometime around the turn of the century (1901 ish) as a factory colour which was subsequently adopted as the national colour for Great Britain. Jens I'm not really picking the extreme. I live just outside London and often go =3D=0D up to meet friends for a drink - those are typical London prices. But then you live in Switzerland - and that has an even higher standard of =3D=0D living than England! But then, the wages and quality of life are are higher =3D=0D ;-) Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 29648... Ah, Colin, of course! Germany was white, you are right!! At least until they needed to save weight on the Auto-Unions and took the paint off to leave them Silver. Guy "Guy Weller" 29639... MORE
Hi, I can't find anything on dash pads for a pre 1968 midget MKII - it is just a simple cylinrical shape all the way across - does anyone have a source for these? Also, where do people get interior carpets/panels & seat covers if they are restoring to the correct original colors? Moss is very limitted and does not have the original colors that came standard with the car. For example, my early 1965 MKII (GAN3L/39468) was originally Riviera Blue with Riviera Blue seats, carpet and panels. I have a 1965 sales brochure showing an example with my... MORE
And to confuse things even more.... My book (Guide to Purchase and Restore the MG Midget & Austin-Healey Sprite) lists 2 BRG, a Medium Dark Green as GN25/ RM BM079 / DITZ 43342 for the Midget & MGB 64-70. The second is listted as a Medium Dark Yellow Green GN29 / RM BM078 / DUP 8194 also for the Midget & MGB 64-70 & MGC 67-69. An original Bugeye sales brouchure lists a Leaf green available with a black or white hood. I don't have any futher listing as to what "Leaf Green" is/was. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb"... MORE
Hey! SOMEBODY knows where I can get this part..... Used is fine if it works.... (Ed, are you out there????). Guess maybe no one will answer me because I've gone to the modification dark side...... Paul '73 RWA "dfwip" 29613... MORE
Alex Bugeye's never came with British Racing Green as a colour option. The closest 'original' colour you'll find to BRG that is 'original' to the BE is Dark Green or Leaf Green for your year of car (Dark Green to Jan 59, Leaf Green thereonwards) The paint code for that is GN15. If you really must have BRG, try GN29 which was used on the Sprite MKII and III. This site's really handy for checking colour paint codes and what they look like on cars - http://www.teglerizer.com/mgcolors/ Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 29606... MORE
Very nice looking car! But as Ed would say - over-restored. My question would be - if it's always been garaged, and lived all it's life in California - wtf did it need restoration? And it's aproaching top buck for a Frog/Bug! Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 29600... MORE
After four years of repairs, I'm finally getting around to painting my 61 bugeye. Problem is there are dozens of "british racing green" colors. Every paint remotely green claims to be BRG. Anyonw with suggestions, or perhaps the paint code #, for a close-to-authentic version of this? Thanks in advance. Alex 61 bugeye (under construction) "Alex del Russo" 29604... MORE
Nigel... My guess is the car was solid and there wasn't much to be spent on the "restoration". If it runs (and is as solid inside) as it looks, this is a beautiful original car. Let's see if it reaches 15k by closing. Wouldn't be surprised. Local BMW/Volvo dealer had a similiarly restored BE ('59) with good w/w's in his lot about a year or so ago, asking 13k. Same Leaf Green as mine. Stopped in and had a chat with the salesman who allowed me a short drive in the car considering I'd driven in, in mine and... MORE
Sure, Jim C., I understand. You're playing it conservatively on the safe side. I would, too, unless that used press. plate was basically new. Using used parts in circumstances wherein the engine must be pulled to replace same "in the event" is a bit of an "iffy" situation unless for whatever reason you don't mind putting yourself in this sort of situation. Me? I'd go with a new plate already modified by Rivergate. You don't want any problems and Rivergate doesn't want you to have any (with their kit), nor would Paul, were it his kit. #1, both are... G'day Terry I think Trevor could be on to the problem. It sounds like you are fitting the clips upside down. There is no way the two "ears" should hit the bodywork - they will face out from the body at about 45 degrees. The flat side of the clip should be flush with the body. If you are fitting them upside down, a small washer will not help - the trim will be loose after it is fitted. And I certainly would not suggest sliding the trim on - you are guaranteed to scatch the paint. The scratch... MORE
But wont the wings hit when the hood is opened. I am doing a lot of body work and then going to paint and don't want any damage. Do I have to remove the brace from the hood to fender and pull the fender out when opening? Where do i get the quater turn fasteners?....Guns ,cats ,executions you guys are nuts...You say theres a bugeye group?....THANKS ...chuck chuck31764@... 29522... MORE
"Got your posts confused there, Cap'n." Sorry Trevor but....It's OK as going to the same list and the party it should have gone to most likely got the message in this event. Yep, modified and kept the Spridget shift lever as well. Little bit beefier than the Datsun one as I recall. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 29513... MORE
It is kind of sad to see someone out of ignorance paying exorbitant prices for something readily available in their local hardware store... Case in point. On ebay at the moment are a set of four plugs to fill the head of a Midget after removing the Air Pump and Rail. There are 5 bids and the current price is at $20.50. The four plugs are: Standard 1/4" brass flare plugs available at Orchard Supply or any ACE hardware store for less than 50 cents each. I have used them on my 74 when I removed the smog air... MORE
I can understand using it for the engine bay, but there aren't that many parts of the interior where the paint is exposed. However, spraying the interior cockpit will give you some practice using the paint before doing the engine bay etc. I'm assuming that this is not the first time you've refurbished/restored a car? Yesterday cleaned the baby sh** yellow panels in the 73 and used black Rust Oleum Vinyl spray on them. Never used vinyl spray before . . . but they look great! Having now extracted the engine from the car I have found its Engine number, whihc is FP4615F, I think this is a proper midget engine. But its defieantly a pinky metalic red. Dad says that this colour indicates a factory recon unit, I thought these were Gold, but aparently that's austin engines, truimph painted thier recon motors a pinky metalic red.I might re-paint it black Stewart "Ford Prefect" 29472... Trevor J. I am using the original Spridget gearshift lever with aftermarket black leather- wrapped gearshit knob topped with a metal disc AH emblem. Picked it up many moons ago from Sports and Classics. Standard aftermarket part also comes in Walnut as well. Another lister already posted the modification to the stock pressure plate so the Datsun disc can be used so, you should be all set! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 29478... MORE
Hi, Jim C. Comments..Rivergate clutch set-up... Running a Cooper S cammed 1293 with cam advanced 4 degrees for Metro inlet timing giving very torquey low and mid-range punch. No clutch problems in 6,000 miles. Ran Judson Supercharged (both 4 & 6 psi "wheels") stock 1275 for about 5,000 miles before realizing blower not compatible (as is) with engine size. Never had a problem with the Rivergate clutch during this time which included some pretty rouch acceleration runs in 3rd & 4th up steep grades. No clutch problems. I find the Rivergate clutch set-up to be more positive in "engagement"... MORE
Ahhhh still kind of new to the MG thing... in fact (don't tell them) mine has a 5-speed). It's by far still a project though. It ran when I took it off the road but a lot of bugs in the system. Whoever did the last restoration used (from what I could tell) a 72 and a 75 or later as parts cars... "Mike" 29463... MORE
Bob- I can't wait. Have the engine out already! Talked with Rivergate, and due to moving into their new shop, was advised they were just now filling November orders. It would be several months wait. Given that I am at the end of a ten year project, I want the car running the first day it gets above freezing in Ohio (which will probably be mid July). I had also heard that the Riverside clutch set-up could be an occasional problem. Apparently they use the MG pressure plate but a Toyota throw-out bearing. Not sure of the disc. Paul... MORE
