Early gearboxes on these cars have plain rather than needle bearings on first gear. If you want to keep things original then you can either get the box rebuilt for a few hundred $ (or do it yourself). Or with a few very minor and reversable mods you can fit a so called ribcase (for obvious reasons) box from the later Sprites and Midgets up to '74. Essentially the same box but with a stronger casing and better internals. If you are going to keep the power more or less std and only use it a few thousand miles... MORE

In the UK a company called Wood & Pickett do a kit for the Mini (the proper one not the BMW shouting thing) that might be adaptable. I have read all your reply's. You guys really know these cars. I have only owned this BE for four months. I Drained the tranny, was very dark almost black. Refilled , with no change. "If memory serves..." Hi, Dave... That's what I thought I read, also. So figure it's a first gear problem and suggested consideration for Datsun box 'cause you know this Spridget box is probably contaminated with metal anyway considering the "wear" before the gear finally gets really noisey, so just getting a rebuilt "replacement" would probably be the way to go with such a situation. Michael...BTDT....bad feeling...$$$$$$$ How would you like it if basically, you would never have to worry about this again, especially in consideration of today's prices on rebuilt LBC gearboxi? Datsun 210 5 speed: Better ratios, especially for a 948/1098 Better acceleration & better cruise Synchro. on First Very much more quiet running And when and if you do have a problem (not likely), rebuilts are $500 instead of $1.000. The rubber bumpers were required to pass US legislation that required a car suffer no damage in a 5 or 15 MPH impact IIRC, However the ride height was raised because at about the same tine US legislation required the headligh ts to be above a certain height, this being the second time the spridgets h eadlights fell foul of US law makers! Yes the rubber bumpers are going back on, too expensive ATM to fit the chrome ones, nit to mention the sheer amount of angle grinding that would bees to be done at the front just to remove the front bumper mountings!, But the 1275 springs are cheaper than the 1500 items and the rear springs certainly need replacement, when I took them off there was a huge amount of rust between each leaf, in fat the 'straps' that hold them together to the rear of the spring had been split by the rust (although I suppose it could have... Been looking at the 1500 shell, and I now remember why wor stalled on it about 10 years ago! the rear arches are shot, and to add to this the boot floor where it meets the inner arch under teh 'chasis' rail that runs round the inner rear arch has evapoarated , the chrassis section is fine, but the floor part of it is just not there. To add to this the small pices atht sits beween the boot floor at the back and the rea sectio of the rear wing has rotted away toatlly, there just is nothing... MORE
