Some of the kits that convert the standard carbon bearing to a roller/ball thrust bearing also need to have the triangular plate removed from the cover, so the bearing presses directly against the spring fingers. Is the old one like this? David "David Jacobs" 37237... MORE
The clutch throwout bearing on the 1275 is a carbon faced bearing, not a ball bearing like other cars, The carbon rides on the triangular shaped flat surface of the spring plate that holds the clutch plate the the flywheel. There are "kits" out there that allow the use of a ball bearing type throwout bearing with the stock clutch - perhaps this is causing your confusion? If you have a transmission convertion, you would most likely have a different throwout bearing. "Jim" 37236... MORE
G'day all The MGB heat shield will work, after you cut it in half, but it might not be easy to find one that the owner will part with. They might prefer to sell the manifold, carbies, heat shield etc as a complete unit. Mini Cooper S had 1.5" SUs as an option, and their heat shields were actually two pieces with a bridge joining them that also held the return springs. You could use the appropriate side of this set-up if only you could find them! I can only supply them new, as a pair, for around $35... MORE
Don't know about these, Spencer but these will settle in time. They all do. How old were the springs you replaced? 'Cause if they were really old (worn) the car probably sat lower in the back then it "should" have. Combine the foregoing with "new" springs, and a 2.5" gain in height, while it seems a lot, might really not be under such circumstances. However, VB sells a rear lowering block kit....I think it takes the rear down 1". Just a guess on my part and the foregoing notwithstanding, I bow to the more knowledgeable with respect to this... HI All, I have a question about the competition 1/2 ellipticals for my MKIII Midget. I installed them and the car now sits approx 2.5 inches taller. Anybody have any ideas? Is it the new springs? Will they settle over 4"? Let me know if anybody elese has had any luck with these. Also I am getting ready to list my house and I was wondering what a hardtop for a spridget should list for. I think I am going to sell that ans a pair of brand new HS2's (still in box)and a few other spridget parts laying... MORE
Busted one on a MG-TC back in the 60s but hadn't thought about that since. I'll definitely check that before pulling the engine/tranny. Hmmmm. If it was the halfshaft, wonder why the gear shift did what it did? Lessee now... I tried to downshift into third and it didn't want to go into third gear. Kinda like there was no gear there at all. Then suddenly it went in so I let the clutch out and something goes bang. I'm still coasting along so I thought, "Well, it's popped out of gear" so I moved the gear change lever... MORE
The gauge can be calibrated Jim for zero and span. I used a pot of boiling water for the high end, just place the temp bulb in it. I keep it boiling with the propane torch to ensure 212 deg. The needle can be removed from the gauge and replaced in the correct place if need be. If the span is out the small linkage within the gauge can be tweaked very lightly to make a difference. Dave Fitted the exhaust manifold but it is hard up against the chassis rail, will show you. I am convinced the engine runs easier and purrs along smoother. I was going to put K&N air filters on, I wanted the one that spans the two carbs as I like the look of it but an owner I met at a show said they just made it noisier and no better so he reverted to the original ones but kept the sports manifold. G'day Vern Your rear axle housing is moving fore and aft when you apply power and back off. If it's no longer at 90 degrees to the axis of the car, it will steer the car to the left or to the right. Look for: * broken spring * worn spring mount bushes at either end * worn spring pads where the axle attaches to the springs * worn trailing arm bushes if you have a quater-elliptically sprung car. Finally got my 1500 on the road after only 16years. It celbrated by breaking its speedo drive, (the cable is intact and the angle drive working fine). Just looked in the moss catalouge and it lists 3 Speedometer pinions, in 20 tooth, 21 tooth and 22 tooth versions. I have a 1975 car with 3.9:1 diff and a 120mph spedometer, anyone know which one I need?. I also have plans for fitting a 3.7:1 diff, would I be right in thinking this would need a differnt pinion, if so which one?. I also have a sticking thottle, mostly down... MORE
If the car has been sitting around for years, especially with some fuel in the tank, the sender tends to absorb fuel, making it heavier, so it won't float. Or the linkage weakens with age, so the sender doesn't behave normally. I had this with my Mk1 Midget, but never did anything about it, as I always filled the tank after doing about 180-190 miles. First the stupid question, is it one of those locks that you need to push in a button (or the whole key) to turn it to the lock position? If you do need to take it apart, the actual switch part can be removed from the lock itself, so you can isolate which bit is jamming, but if it is the lock, they don't come apart easily (for obvious reasons) Easiest thing is to replace it, together with the steering column it's attached to, with a brand new second hand one, if you can find one. I misunderstood. I thought you said it misfires above 2800, when what you actually said is that it misfires AT 2800, but is okay above and below. I'm pretty sure this is a carburation problem wherein at a certain rpm there is a strange harmonic set up in the intake manifold and carburetor, which causes erratic, uncontolled movement of the air piston. Try this: Remove the old oil from the piston damper. To do this you'll have to remove the cap and the screws which hold the cover in place. Then remove the piston and it's diaphragm. Be careful,... Rick, When I went to install the Frontline tube shock conversion, I had to totally re-pipe the front brake lines from the MC to the calipers. (Frontline forgets to mention that small detail.) So I figured while I was at it, I would put in the LL. I do expect to run at the drags eventually and use it. It's good for laughs now - a couple of years ago at the Syracuse Nationals, Third Rail was a big crowd pleaser in an impromtu burnout contest in one of the hotel parking lots. Rick, My V6 is a GM crate motor sold for replacement of the Chevy S10 2.8L V6. It is rated at 160 hp if the stock S10 2bbl intake and cast iron exhaust manifolds were bolted back on it. With my headers and Holley/Offy intake system, I would guess mines's up toward 190 or so, but I have no dyno data.
