Been out driving at night with the new speedo/rev counter lights. Speedo good using original lamp holder with 2.2w bulb in the 12 o/clock hole previously covered with a plastic cap and a 5w bulb in a ford cortina MK 2 side light holder in the 4 o/clock position. Be even better if it were not for the sky blue colour introduced by the inside of the housing being painted this colour. Rev counter better using a 5w bulb in a ford cortina MK 2 side light holder instead of the original but still dark in the 4000 region... MORE

Bob A wow factor of 4.6 - is that out of a 1,000? And if you want your brake, clutch and fuel lines to look like the wiring of an electrical plug - go right ahead! N "amukdigiphoto" 30239... MORE

G'day TJ Remove the float bowl lids and, with a compressed air gun, blow the sludge out of the sump at the bottom of the bowls. Remove the carby dashpost and blow air into the bottom of the float bowl to ensure the fuel supply jet to the carby is clear. We had a car in the shop recently with a similar problem - idled fine but wouldn't go up a hill. Plenty of fuel in the float bowl, but the fuel supply jet was 90% blocked and nothing was getting to the carby. And if the car has... MORE

Rob C. "Stickyness" IS usually the sign of a jet (or slightly bent needle) not exactly centered. SU makes a "Tuning Tool Set" ($15?) which has a jet centering tool which will line this little critter up perfectly. If this doesn't free things up, most likely a slightly bent needle, then. It is important to keep the same suction valve with the same suction chamber. I am told these are "matched" at the factory. There should be no sticking between valve and chamber when these parts are clean of all varnish/fuel deposit which may have accumulated over use/time. Cap'n.... MORE

Cap'n Bob- What leads me to believe I have an issue as to fuel flow is that my car is acting very simmilar to the motorcycles I race when I have had fuel flow issues (pinched fuel line, clogged filter, even started a race once time with the fuel petcock 1/2 way on). It's like it runs peachy in lower RPM's and if I gas it, it runs fine in the upper range too, for about 5-10 seconds, until the float bowls are depleated. At this point, it runs like crap even at low RPM's until float bowls fill... MORE

I have 2 main mechanical issues I will need to fix before doing any real driving. (I have many other non-mechanical issues, some even just mental). 1. Brake pedal needs "pumped" to build up pressure. Once I pump it a few times I can hold it down and it stays firmly (doesn't go all the way to the floor no matter how hard I push). Before I pump it, it goes all the way to the floor. When I let off the brakes, and drive for a bit, I need to go through the whole process again. I don't... MORE

Neighbors must think me crazy . . . My 73 has the notorious sticking fuel pump contacts. Usually it works but after about a week of sitting it acts up. I keep my knock off hammer behind the seat . . . if I do not hear the fuel pump start clicking when I turn on the key I reach back behind me, take the big lead knock off hammer and hit the back wheel arch behind the passenger seat. It gets the message and starts clicking. Works every time.... Beats getting out, finding a broom handle and sticking... MORE

I have a 73, and a 74. They had only sat for about a year each, however I did have a 62 that the previous owner had run since 1987 and then only for a couple of months, almost 22 years total except for that short period . . . There are things you can count on fixing and replacing when they sit that long . On the 73 I disconnected the fuel line from the float bowls, stuck it in a jar and turned on the key to activate the fuel pump to see how the fuel was... MORE

An added thought. When using compressed air through the fuel lines also be sure and not blow it back into the carburetor bowls. What year is it and if it was stored before you bought it how long was it sitting not running? Don "Don May" 30138... MORE

Jens I would think most plating companies would do the 'clear zinc and yellow passivation' as the process is similar for chrome plating apart from the final process and polishing. It's worth checking with whoever you intend to do your chrome playing with. It's best to group the items up and get them done in a batch rather than trying to get individual pieces done - it's cheaper that way. I didn't sand blast any of mine, but cleaned them thoroughly in white spirit/turps/kerosene several times to get rid of any oil or grease that was in there. I... MORE

The 3.7 diff was used in the later 1500 and in the riley 1.5 and wosley 1500, and AFIK not a fragile unit at all, well your 1500 engine is more likely to break than the diff, given its liking for throwing rods in standard form. One thing to note though is your speedometer will need recalibrating as it will read slow. Stewart "Ford Prefect" 29875... MORE

Hi, My gas pedal often sticks (does not return all the way back). I can usually fix it by tapping it a bit but sometimes I have to quickly hook it with my shoe to get the revs back down to idle speed. I have determined that this problem is caused by corrosion on the floor hinge rather than a problem with the throttle springs, cable or the bent rod between the cable and the pedal. I have improved the pedal's action somewhat by applying oil and wd40 to the hinge and by excersizing the pedal to try and... MORE

Sure, Nigel... My mech is getting $80hr (going rate for this area) while dealers are getting even more. Good thing he and I have known each other for over 30 years! :) Of course, basic power cost increased 400-500% back in early 70's as oil went "fair trade" (OPEC, etc.) which sorta kicked off global inflation to that extent! :) Cap'n. Paul... No, no. Don't misunderstand. My ONLY point here is that you might want to educate yourself to the extent possible by speaking to more of an expert in these matters before you make a decision as we're talking a matter of "gray" here. The end decision is of course your's which is as it should be, as we are talking your time, talents, money and YOUR car! :) This is exactly why you should speak to Paul A about this before you go further. There may be more to this than initially meets the eye (which would not... MORE

I purchased from Moss2 adaptor #235-875. In taking off the old canister, I found the adapter sits real close to the generator. the old canistor mounted on a small mount that in turn attaches to the engine block. the sole purpose of this appears to be to raise the oem canistor oil filter high enough to clear the frame that runs below that side of the engine. if I remove the threaded studs that this mount attaches to the engine block, can I mount the adaptor directly to the engine block with the supplied allen head studs? I think... MORE

A lot of modern cars use an all glass bulb with just two wires from it, that is a firm push fit into a plastic holder which itself has "ears" that fasten to the back of the speedo - or whatever. I looked at one of these and reckon that the plastic unit could easily be fastened in place with a blob of silicon. Guy "Guy Weller" 29584... MORE

Hi Got a little bit further. You can get bulb holders that fit the speedo and rev counter but take a 12 v 5w side light bayonet or cap less bulbs. A lot more light than the 2.2 w MES ones. I have got some and whilst not perfect it's a lot better. Terry "terry.isherwood" 29579... MORE

Remind me never to take these apart again, what a job getting the rev counter bezel back again. The inner disk just would not drop in, it had sprung out never to go back. Two G clamps and a small hammer persuaded it to reseat. Found a selection of gasket material by the yard to make all new seals. Have tried 12 v 5 watt side light bulbs, much improved but they are bayonet connectors not MES so am working on adaptor. First choice is to dismantle 5 w bulb and unsolder it to give a glass envelope with... MORE

Tonight, while working around the house, I found an unusual use for a speedo cable. The bathtub drain was very slow this morning. Before I took off to defensive driving class, I removed the screen, and pulled out enough hair that is looked like I had removed a small rat from the drain. Upon returning home, I was told that the tub would not drain. This was puzzling, as it was at least moving slow that a.m. I tried a plunger, and hair clog remover, to no avail. The drain just would not move. I then remembered that I... MORE

Maplins have a web site (maplin.co.uk) and do mail order from it. The wire is quite thick for the panel lights and shoulds easily take the extra load. When I get to Maplin I will buy a holder and a halogen bulb, and try to modify the existing holder. In the past I have smashed up a bulb and mounted the new holder in the screw bit of the old bulb. Now the old bit screws into the original holder and the new bulb goes into the new holder. Got two problems, not a lot of light and bad... MORE

Tim I am not that familiar with the 1500 cars but I expect the engine will have to come out to replace the clutch and so this is going to cost 300 in most garages, however if money is tight and the engine was running OK before the gasket blew why not just get that fixed (maybe 150 or so). The problem with second hand engines is that they may be no better than the one you have and you are not going to know without removing the head and checking the bores, so it will still cost you... Oh, yeah.. that's right. 1098's didn't come with an oil cooler. Right, right, right...I had to transfer mine over from my wrecked PO'd '67 I was working on, when acquiring my 1098 equipped BE to take it's place. I am a little surprised you are only getting 65psi "cold" out of a "new" motor, Brad. Not that this is "bad" or anything like that, but most newly rebuilt motors built to street tolerances (IMHO) put out 70+. I'm leaving my present motor out of this as it was built by plan to the tight side and actually required a... MORE
