Flew out to Laguardia yesterday am, train on up to Newburgh. Acquired the NY State Temp Tag, and drove the B home. No issues. More later once I've had time to sleep. Hi all,and a happy easter to you all. I don't think so, Tom. Considering what you paid, if it's in the decent mechanical shape claimed, I think you did OK for what you paid, personally. I owned a de-smogged '72 until a certain girl ran a Stop sign one night and her insurance co. put me into a new Fiat 1/9. Pull the head and shave it to bring the Comp. Ratio up to no more than 9.5-1, (mine was 10-1 but we had "manly" gas available at that time!:) and purchase a set of 1.75 HS4's suitably calibrated as in Stage 1 of the Special Tuning... MORE
Biff and Paul, Thanks for the replies! No, I was following the manual which states to check the endfloat after installing the oil pump and retaining plate. Looks like the manual is just plain WRONG! Hi all, I picked up a 1275 (73 Midget) engine for my Morris Minor project car. Since it arrived in four boxes a few parts were missing (so I've discovered) One of these was the small triangular(ish) drive flange which connects the camshaft to the oil pump. A new oil pump and flange were obtained (along with loads of other stuff for a complete rebuild). After assembling the oil pump, camshaft and the triangular camshaft retaining plate I find I have about 1/8" or so of endfloat where the spec is 4 to 7 thou! The retaining plate is... MORE
Are you checking the end float with the camshaft gear in place and tight? There won't be anything on the oil pump end to keep it in place and a spacer in there isn't a very good idea. Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 31129... MORE
Your plans pretty much match up with what I am doing, Rick. I have the engine compartment pretty well taken care of as well as the front wheel wells. I used POR 15 on the compartment and the various metal shrouds and brackets. It is supposed to be very tough and it has a nice shine to it. Since my color is black the color match is not a concern. Well Friday night I charged up the Midget battery and took it for the first spin of spring. The new Yokohamas are great and I live the wider chrome wire wheels! The tires stick out past the fenders (wings Nigel) about an inch or so, or just enough for that "hod rod" look I'm going for. Of course, I'd forgotten the fuel guage only goes a little below half a tank when it's empty, so I had an unexpected walk this morning, only about three blocks, but I've gotta boil out that tank I bought and see if the... Ben, My 1500 has Peco exhaust, oil cooler but no magnetronic ignition or kenlowe fan, from Nov 2002 until Oct 2003 it was in daily use and i covered 15000 miles in that time as well as several large jouneys includng Le Mans and back which all told was 1000 miles in 4 days. (I'm in the UK) My car is far from perfect but regular and pre-emtive maintainance is the key to reliablility. Once you've ironed out all the faults that the previous owners failed to take care of (in my case my own brother!) its pretty easy... MORE
hi people, just want some advice, the engine on my 1500 has just given-up! i need a car as a daily driver- must also beavble to make long trips of 300 =3D=0D miles plus easily if i buy a new engine, ehanust system, magnetronic ignition, oil cooler, ke =3D=0D nlowe fan, overhaul carbs, do you think a 1500 midget will be up to this? Hi Guys, Well, I went back and rechecked my fuel filter, a new one installed only a month or two back....it was full of rust. Took the filler tube off and saw my gas tank was full of rust. Local radiator shop was going to charge $130 to clean and coat my old tank, decided to spend a few more bucks and got a new tank (and another filter). Test drive went fine, wife is happy and so am I! Bob, Guilty as charged. On my BE, all of the slots on the screws that hold the aluminum tub trim have to be dead on horizontal. In places where nobody can ever see, I might use an odd fastener that doesn't match the others... but it will bother me when I do. Places that can be seen - I've written down on my shopping list to get one more stainless 1/4-28 bolt so that they all will match. Cable tie tails on wire bundles have to point in the same direction - even though they're cut off anyways. Hose... MORE

Thank you for your responses By Modern driving I am assuming that they are talking about fast road and motorway driving 60-80 mph. I'm not sure exactly what rpm she'd be doing at that speed but I would imagine that it would be around the 4000+ mark. Given what has been said then in 90F summer heat an oil cooler would be very beneficial for fast use. However I wouldn't take the Midget onto the motorway for the same reasons that I wouldn't take the Cooper onto the motorway 1. It is too small and vulnerable 2. It is... MORE
Oil cooler.."to be, or not to be?" Pretty much agree with Alan on this unless by "modern driving" they are referring to any highway travel, for even the shortest distance at 3.500rpm or so (especially in ambient temps above 60F or so) will immediately show up on the oil pressure gauge (lower pressure), most assuredly when you exit a freeway and come to a stop and look at the pressure at normal idle!! :) Cap'n. Hi, Snakeperson... The stock (rubber) diaphragm is "good" if you can remove the filtered (containing a "graduated" orifice) cap and the idle increases about 200rpm. The first sign (usually) of a worn out rubber diaphragm is, of course, an exhaust suddenly smoking and an enigne suddenly using a helluva lot of oil, both for apparent no good reason at all.
