just purchased a 68 midget. the water/oil gauge does not work and want to repair or replace it. In doing so, I wanted to remove the dash to give me easier access to the faulty gauge but cant find how the top of the dash is attached to the car. service manuals talk about four screws along the top of the dash but haven't found them. any suggestions on how to approach this? "MARK " 23355... MORE

You do not have to remove the dash to get the gauge out. Reach under the dash, remove the bracket holding the gauge in place, pull the gauge out of the dash just enough to remove the oil line, remove the cap. tube from the radiator, then pull the system out via the hole in the dash. Replace in the opposite manner. Zegrod53@... 23356... MORE

Dave... I think your wife is terrific!! From what I see on the weather channel this is indeed a fair test of the car, for sure. Quite a heat wave out there. Avoiding the afternoons is just smart thinking 'til they get to cooler country. Glad to hear both ladies are doing fine and will continue to stand-by for more as I continue rooting for them!! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 23326... MORE

Re: Fuel Pump Pressure? Hey does anyone know what the fuel pressure should be coming out of the fuel pump on a 1978 1500 midget? Mine is 5 1/2 pounds. When I drive over 3500 RPM's / 60-65 MPH the gas goes to the front charcoal canister, fills it and chokes out the carb. I take off the bottom hose, drain and ok for another 20 miles. We tried everything and it still happens. I was thinking maybe the pressure is too high. Any thoughts. Joe Blitz Rochester NY "Joe Bellizia" 23310... MORE

G'day all Gotta ask - why?????? Under heavy braking, when the weight transfers to the front, the rear brakes lock up with the standard drum brakes fitted. I get slower as I get older (or so my bride tells me), but perhaps someone can explain to me why locking up the rears sooner (by using disc brakes) is an advantage. Personally, I enjoy power oversteer, but don't cherish disappearing backwards into the shrubbery under hard braking. Of course I have seen a few people fit rear disc brakes. Guess what they fit next. A brake biassing valve (usually off... MORE

Don.... Is the water pump is operable and on the engine and belt hooked up? If so, hook up a hose (tape, whatever) and "feed" the motor thru the thermo cover letting it run out the back (block heater outlet) using a normal hose hooked up to a spigot at low flow velocity? And I wouldn't take a chance on a malfunctioning stadt, either. Go stadtless. Otherwise I have no clue since in summer temps., mine warms up virtually in a heartbeat...really. But I don't think this is the critical aspect of it, anyway. You see, without water circulation... MORE

The seal is based around a plated steel u section with lateral splits to make it flexible. It relies of some barbs and its springiness to hold on. However being mild steel it's not really that springy. The trick is to spread just the end a tiny bit to get you started then use the seam you are putting it on to open up the seal as you feed it on, a bit like doing up a zip (OK nothing like that but its the closest analogy I could think of). If you take the bit you've used so... MORE

I think we need a little more detail. However a weird thing you need to know is what happens at each end. The rear of the seal comes off the seem and is trapped behind the rear trim panel, much cheaper than the fancy moulding used on later cars. The front end disappears under the dash though I can't remember how it is held. "Jeremy Cogman" 23241... MORE

Thanks for the reply. It's very hard for me to explain what I need to know. The seal I purchased from Moss Motor clips over the ridge that runs from front to back on the area of the door opening on the main body. It is a system that to spread apart and slip over this ridge. Only troube is that once you do this the seal will not stay in place. That's the best I can explain it. Zegrod53@... 23242... MORE

I have a 61 Bugeye and need instructions on how to properly install door seal on my cas. So far I have gained nothing but frustration in my attempts to do this. Anyone have any suggestions. Thanks "bucks6125" 23236... MORE

If anybody has installed a Rivergate in a MK II Sprite, what do you do about the adjustment to the metal shifter housing cover and boot so that it looks fairly original and not "butchered" up. Is there another boot out there that you can recommend? This thing wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. Also, if anybody decides to order one, make sure that you know what size crank is in there or you'll get the wrong seal AND they have to know if your car is RHD or LHD. I didn't tell them and got... Nigel, Set the multimeter to resistance and connect one lead to the metal flange of the sender unit and one to the wiring spade. As you raise and lower the float there should be a smooth increase and decrease in resistance reading. Sorry, I forget what the normal resistance reading is bit if the resistance reading varies smoothly then the sender unit is most likely fine. If the unit has been sitting for a long time you may have to exercise it some to break up any oxidation on the surface of the wire wound resistance strip inside the... MORE

Hi everyone Things have not gone quite to plan... My intended midget has been ditched. I was going to pay a fair bit for it, and having spoken to several people (including a guy from the MG Car Club's Midget Register) should have got a good car for my money. On further inspection, the one I was going to have had a mileometer that didn't move, doors that didn't lock, an oil leak, VIN number that didn't match the documents and so on, so I've hung on to my cash and will keep looking for a car slightly nearer... it's just a case of 'adjusting' with hammer and dolly till you get as good a fit as possible. It's not good practice, but you can force them to take up the profile of the sill using lots of clamps etc while you weld. If the car is on its side or upside down, it's reasonably straightforward to seam weld them in position. You *can* get 'weld-through' primer to paint before you fit them, and once welded, brush on seam-sealer to seal the gaps and spray the inside with Waxoyl or similar. Need some help on this. I intended to rebuild my clutch master cylinder so I looked in the Haynes 1275/1500 comic book. It says to remove the pedal box cover remove the cotter pin and pin and than remove the master cylinder nuts. How does someone remove the lower nut without taking off the entire pedal box along with also removing the brake master cylinder. Not so simple a job. Is this the only way to get at the nut. Wimpy.... There are 1500 owners who would very much like to be in your shoes with your 1275 driveline set-up, believe me!! When YOUR transmission goes, you can at least exchange it for the readily available, easily installable Datsun 210 conversion for about what it costs for a rebuilt British ribcase at today's prices. AND, you have the benefit of already having the higher geared 3.7 diff. as well (most likely) which came stock in the later 1500 Spridgfires. Which is a good thing considering the first 3 ratios for the 210 gearbox are slightly lower than those in... MORE

Could be a pressure switch to connect to a light on the dashboard which tells you when the filter gets clogged. You probably deserve what you get if you leave the oil that long perhaps ............ I have a '66 and it has one of those. On the other hand ... OTHERS probably know better R. "Roger Stinson" 22988... MORE

Nelson I think it is for the blocked filter warning light ( the red light just above the oil pressure gauge ). A 62 Sprite should have this light the later cars do not so a spin on filter head from a later car will not have this connection but I guess an adapter for use on an earlier car should. Hope this helps Dave "David Dixon" 22986... MORE

I just purchased a used spin-on oil filter adapter and have a question about it. On the top there is a push on electrical connector and I am curious as to what it is used for. I'm guessing that it is connected to the on-board computer in newer versions of the LBC's and would tell the driver that the oil is dirty and it is time to change it. Hooray! After reading the suggestion below I went and swapped out the solenoid for a new one. The Midget now starts up like a champ, instantly and without fuss, with the key, every time! This leads me to believe that I may have left out a clue to this mystery. I didn't even know it was a clue until now: since I got the car 16 months ago, the starter always took 5-15 seconds of cranking to start the car. The PO informed me that it "has always been that way". He had owned the car for 6 years... MORE

Hi, Don... Well, I have to admit I am doing most of this from memory of what I had on my po'd '74.....this was like 20+ years ago!! Naturally, when I looked at all that stuff cluttering up the engine compartment, I barfed! Then I took it all off, cut the restrictors on the carbs, got a ventilated/ filtered oil filler cap and set up a "ventilated" rather than "evacuated" system. But as Gerard and many others have correctly pointed out, a properly working PCV system is a "good thing" in more than one respect. Yes...the engine breathes in... MORE
