Hmmm, could be several things. With these plastic filters, as I recall, the fuel flows into the centre of the filter element and outwards so you don't see when it's full of clag. T hat said, you can drive on long cruising stretches fine. IT could therefore be the fuel pump. This is (if it is as standard) mounte d under the 'rear seat' and has a crude (but effective electro-mechanical m echanism akin to a doorbell. IT contains a set of electrical points which detoriarate over time which can lead to the pump 'sticking'. Often a bang on... MORE

Any dot 4 brake fluid will do. You're not a doofus. The doofuses are the ones who don't ask the questions . We all didn't know this stuff once. "Jeremy Cogman" 26003... MORE

Hi all, my name is Julian from Uk (Nottingham) and I am a newcomer to the site so p lease treat me gently. I have purchased an absolutely beautiful (I would say that wouldn't I) 1967 MG Midget in Red, wire wheels, chrome bumpers, leather trim with white pip ing...mmmmm Anyway. I have a little problem in that after a long run with no junctions I often have to sit in traffic queues to get into the centre of the City. I f I am in a queue like this for over 10minutes...creaping forward in first. .stopping....into neutral...into first....stopping....the... MORE

May need to bleed the clutch etc. aswell if you were low on fluid. R. "Roger Stinson" 26000... MORE

OK...went to Autozone and had this choice....Castrol "Manual Clutch Fluid" or Castrol DOT 4 ABS brake fluid. I didn't see anything LMT- GA. Is that the same as the manual clutch fluid? Don't worry. I didn't buy anything yet. "Virginia" 26001... MORE

Julien... Well, could be an old or weak fuel pump, lack of a heat shield between carbs and engine (it gets hot under there when not moving at speed) causing fuel to percolate or "vapour lock", or lack of a vented fuel cap (though the latter is usually a case of fuel starvation which shows up under load..as in climbing a long hill with the foot well down). So, number one, check for the heat shield (basically a metal plate upon which the throttle return springs are mounted in the stock set-up). If it's "there"....go to... ...number two; at... MORE

Ok...I've checked the fluid and the resevoir is not full. There's no dipstick or anything so do I just fill it up? And is the fluid supposed to be clear? I'm used to it having a reddish tint in my Comanche. Virginia 65 Midget "Virginia" 25995... MORE

Hi, Ginger... The Castrol LMA GT is basically clear... with just a hint of yellow. Fill the reservoir to the bottom of the filler neck. Check it in a week and top off, again, if needed. That should about do it....then check the level at least once a month, once every two weeks is even better or anytime you're underneath there checking the oil level. Cap'n. Guy Trust you, Mr Thrifty ; ) I'd never really though about that to be honest, I just wanted to replace t =3D=0D he rubber diaphragm with another new rubber diaphragm, cost wasn't an issue to be honest, not that I'm saying that 'it'll be done at all costs' just th =3D=0D at I wanted the seats as original as everything else. What I was unhappy about was the strip that goes round the SU fuel pump. =A31.70 for a strip of self adhesive that didn't even have the correct SU l og=3D=0D o on it, I did ring... MORE

Oh absolutely although I don't hink it is as simple as company X is cheaper than company Y. I have a pool of about half a dozen suppliers I use and I shop around each time because one company will be cheaper for one thing whereas another will be cheaper for something else. I've found Bromsgrove MG very cheap for some of the 'regular' things such as fuel pumps and brake drums, especially if you are happy to have 'pattern'. Jeremy Well, I haven't ordered any parts for the Midget for some time, the last time was about 12... MORE

I also ordered some parts for my fuel pump, which I'm putting back together =3D=0D , and decided to get the 'SU replacement part' tape to go round the middle of =3D=0D the pump holding the rubber sealing strip in position. Now, I was unhappy with this and it will go back. They haven't even got the =3D=0D correct SU logo on the strip, and even then, the circle has chunks knocked =3D=0D out of it. For a price of =A31.70 (2.55 USD) I thought it was a bit pricey, but f=3D=0D or it to be crap quality as... MORE

Mike What kind of fuel delivery problems are you having? The correct size of the actual fuel pipe itself is 1/4 " diameter, so I wouldnt haave thought either of those two rubber hose pieces would cause a problem. It's more likely to be something else, perhaps something blocking, or fuel pump not working correctly or dirt in the carbs, dirty fuel filter etc. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 25812... MORE

Well... Oil is absolutely coming up through the pushrod tubes...faster than it can drain down...It must be coming up from the lifter gallery as it seems that the lifter gallery is filling first before it pushes the oil up through the pushrod tubes and into the valve-spring-rocker-arm-area. There doesn't seem to be anything leaking (more than should be expected) from the rocker shaft assembly. Thanks again to anyone who has posted... Kevin "kevin_tonita" 25796... MORE

the engine needs rebuilding at the moment as it burns a little oil when reved out of gear - slightly blue, i dont think i will be able to turbo it at the moment because im 20 (= stupid insurance), so would like a build which is a good investment for power later down the road and i think turboing is a good, reliable (cheapish) way to this any ideas on how to do this wisely without wasting (too much) money? has anyone tried avonbar self build kits, are these hard to put together? cheers Rob "Robert EADES" 25775... Guy Weller asks, "Do I need a flame suit?" No. We buy in vast quantities. SUV's aside, our oil consumption alone for commercial transportation, including our airline (both public and corporate) for one day is unreal, relatively speaking, So, relatively speaking we get low, low prices accordingly. If the average joe is already paying a 48% tax rate, then funding isn't the problem. How we are spending what we have IS. Tax or no tax, our government would find OTHER ways to spend it. This then is the real problem...accountability for the bucks and exactly where they're going. But... MORE

The Morris minor engine will bolt straight in and sit on the original mountings as log as you still have them! However there are some minor (?) differences, but very few of these will prevent the car form driving. You will have to fit an electric fuel pump as the original 948 had an AC mechanical pump driven from the crank shaft, the Morris minor had an SU electric pump, and so the block will not have the hole in the side to fit the mechanical pump. The minor engine will be one of three sizes. 803cc in which... MORE

The same as the brakes, funnily enough.:-) but, daft as it sounds, it depends what is in there. Some people put in silicone fluid, but note the comments of other listers on this in earlier posts, but it is most liely to be the standard disc brake fluid which is DOT 4 these days. It used to be special girling disc brake fluid when the car was new, because that would withstand higher temperatures than the then standard drum brake fluid! I think I might even have one of the original tins somewhere ....... (acute squirrelitis) R. "Roger Stinson"... MORE

If my memory serves me correctly, your car is a Mk2 Midget with the dual master cylinder. This means that if you lose fluid from the brakes, the clutch stops working properly and I think this is the first thing to check. The chances are, if you can't see fluid leaking anywhere, that the rear wheel cylinder could be faulty. I hope that I am wrong but have a careful look. R. "Roger Stinson" 25702... MORE

Until I get the transmission from the 68 repaired, I have dug through the extras in shed. I started with the latest one that came out of a 65 Midget, that had not been on the road in over 20 years. The shifter would not move, and the input shaft was almost locked. I put an old yoke on the back and gave it a bit more pressure and got it to move. I forced the shifter into all gears, and got a nice positive, firm movement on front and rear shafts. The thing that concerned me was the... MORE

Hey Roger...I haven't noticed anything leaking and haven't noticed anything wrong with the brakes. FOr the clutch to go out that suddenly after a hard brake struck me as odd. Usually you have more warning that you're having clutch issues. At least in my comanche you do. I'll check fluid levels when I leave work today. The clutch uses DOT 4? vleonard@... 25703... MORE

Hi, Gingerino.... On a real hard "brake", any weak point in the brake system (wheel cylinder, etc) may "give way", emptying out to one extent or another, a goodly portion of the hydraulic fluid in the master cylinder reservoir, wherein clutch and brake systems share fluid. If this is the case, you may spot a hydraulic fluid leak under the car where it's been parked for a while. Otherwise, check the fluid level in the Master Cylinder in any case. If your car runs separate hydraulic systems for clutch and brake, then think back......did the clutch go "in" before,... MORE

maybe a PO put in some snake oil to 'quieten it down' at some stage? If the volatile stuff evaporates over time your red clay might be what's left. There *is* actually a clay-like mineral called bentonite which is used in some types of grease; dunno what goes into gearbox-quietener-down gunk though. David "David Jacobs" 25719... MORE

Congrats, James! Rain has stopped here and I am about to take the BE out as the sun comes out... I know "that feeling" you are feeling! No way around taking everything out with respect to the oil leak, eh? The 1380 is a pretty potent unit and if it's new, rings probably haven't really seated fully yet so crankcase pressure would be maybe temporarily on the high side? Sure the crankcase is either well vented or the PCV system (either way) is functioning properly...I mean I hate to see 'ya pull the whole shebang apart again (though not... MORE
