I plan to throw out my mechanical fuel pump on my 62 948 engine and replace it with an electronic pump. This pump model on e-bay ( http://tinyurl.com/2l72d ) has been there a number of times but I wonder if it would be a satisfactory substitute for the SU solid state version. Any thoughts? Jim, You don't say what the material composition of the bushing are (rubber. urethane, Delrin, etc., but all require some type of lubricant and some precompression into the A-arm. Rubber lube would be best and special bushing should come with an installation lubricant or at leasta recommendation in the instructions. As regards flat or gloss, an old friend of mine visited the factory at Abingdon while they were producing rubber bumper cars and he said you could look down the rows of parked cars awaiting dispatch and pick out some that had distinctly more shiny bumpers than others, possibly due to different moulds being used. So it's your choice, but I think glossy looks better. However, the front and rears were actually different material, various sources say the rear is nylon (to resist fuel spills) and the front polycarbonate. I hope someone can give me some advice on this. Drivers school and race second weekend in June and I can't get the bloody running. I have a highly tuned (national level) race bugeye from the 70's era. Don't know the compression ratio, but probably pretty high, 12 to 1 at least. 4,000 to 7,000 rpm cam. 30 deg. advance. 110 octane race gas. champion n59g spark plugs. Electronic ignition box. No choke, just ram air intakes modifed hs2 carbs. Had it to a local brit car guru last fall and he tuned the carbs and set it up... MORE
Neil... As far as I know... Del's utilize a diaphragm operated accelerator pump circuit which is more easily "tuned/adjusted" for a particular "tuned" application then is the DCOE's mechanically actuated system. Hi Ryan The heat shields are available new, I've just bought one for my car from my local MG spares supplier, Beech Hill garage! It's a pain to fit though, a real juggling act with the carbs.....why oh why are the carbs held on with nuts and bolts rather than having studs like an A series! Also it could be the petrol ageing the diaphragm, make you sure you buy top quality ones from a good supplier like Moss. Ryan Oh how I know how you feel... Check the oil in the dashpot, inside cap oh top of carb. Then remove the cover and check the rubber diaphram for any holes or tears. Either of these may cause the problem you are having. For now check the easy/obvious stuff first. Mike mk2sprite@... 31710... MORE
This car is both my love and my worst enemy. '76 Midget, single ZS All cylinders firing, all new plugs this afternoon. She idles fine and smooth, but as soon as i hit the road she revs fine UNTIL about 2800rpm, same spot every time, the rev nearly stops. No matter how far i push the accelerator, it takes nearly 30 seconds to rev from 2800 to 3200, and that makes for a lousey drive. The manual choke is wide open. Pete, That is true. I am just now getting ready to start working on one of my Bugeyes after dragging it through 2 marriages and 5 different houses for the past 35 years. Now that the last wife is an ex-wife for the past 2 years, I am now just putting the finishing touches on my new 1000 sq ft workshop and dragged the first Sprite up into the shop and washed the last 30 years of dirt and spider-webs off of it. Too late - it's already been done - John Cooper did it with a Mini, and the factory did it with a Mini Moke (Twinni Moke). Neither of them were that successful (probably because they only had 60 or 70 psi oil pressure) David PS why bother locking the rear steering? it'd be much more interesting having both ends steer, and none of that wimpy Honda 4WS where they only have a limited amount of lock at the rear! my 79 1500 was smelling like gas badly. Noticed the water controlled choke was basicaly hanging by one screw. So, like a fool, I disasembled the choke while I was in there, just to see if everything was ok. Now the stupid part: I'm not sure if I lost it, or if it was never there, but there's no heat mass. Now my question is, it's nice and warm here in NH now, being spring and all; Do I even need a choke, or can I just seal off the holes in the carb? and how hard is it... MORE

Why stop there, lets go all the way. There were several conversions in the '80s (I think Renault???) where they set up an unlimited rally car where they hopped up the front engine, front wheel drive, then built an identical engine/tranny drive and put it in the rear. Just connected the throttles and the shift linkage and clutches together. They locked the steering in the rear and presto. a 500 or 600 HP rocket ship 4 wheel drive rally car. And if you blew an engine, you could still keep on driving!!!!! So all we have to do is... MORE
"...seal it off completely..." This will detract from the engine's ability to cool itself uniformly. Better to come up with a fitting which will allow flow from rear of engine back to water pump via "normal" means and leave the heater out of the equation altogether. Cap'n. Tuesday I was minding my own business, quite literally I was looking for a new site for a lumberyard in a community we don't have one. I decided to take a detour on my way out of town to look at job site we were supplying. This detour took me past the local General Motors dealer. Initially I thought it was the gasket, so I changed those. Then, when it still was leaking, I removed it from the fender well and the fluid was leaking out from the where the crank goes into the body. I only drive the beast in the summer. I have never had the heater on (I think the core leaks), so could I just come up with a couple plugs and seal off the hoses, thereby ignoring the valve altogether? "Michael" 31531... MORE
You would not have oil pressure of 400psi, a metro turbo oil pump with cold oil will only push a max of 130 psi. Maybe you are using a dry sump system that is not setup correctly. regards beckers 1330 "beckers" 31516... MORE
Some people actually do believe what we say on this list, ...no matter how far the tongue is inserted in the cheek..! Jim, My take on this is that it has become folklore. The original logic was: "it is a bad thing to buy and fit a second hand oil cooler - because you do not know the history, how or what it was installed on,which way round it was plumbed in, what oil was used, etc, etc".
