That's the foolproof but difficult way; the easy way is to look for the stamped markings - either the ratio itself or the part number. I think this is on the outside of the casing for the diff assembly. The crownwheel (ring gear) and pinion sets are also marked with their own part number :- ATA 7326 and BTA 550 are the 4.2 diffs from early and late cars respectively. Subject: Re: ? on Master Cyl piston The black coating is indeed black oxide. It is not any form of paint. We call it Chemical blacking. (or kemmy blacking - in conversation) Can be done as a Hot or Cold process. - hot is better for durability. First done on gun barrels I believe. You can buy the cold process as a kit. Jens...suggestion? Go out and purchase a simple Facet solid state electric fuel pump with it's own "incoming" filter. You want the low pressure one, around 3-4psi. Cut out a piece of rubber gasket to place between the pump/body and install it where the stock SU pump went (according to your Haynes manual or whatever you are using) in later cars. "How much oil...PCV valve" Well, it's been a long time since I've used one in my "ventilated" motors but as I recall from my '67 MGB, they look pretty much soaked in oil under the rubber diaphragm. Perhaps somebody else can confirm this for me or let us know differently. I gotta go back 30 years for this one! Fellas! I just have to tell you this, its probably old news to most of you but anyway. As you know i have been having problems lately (yet again), the symtoms were many and hard to make out. Well today the ba***rd fouled again and wouldnt run properly just like it was running on only 3 cyl. We are now 110% certain that its the petrol causing it. What happens is when the engine has reached normal temprature and i stop (with engine running) or drive very slowly the temp rise very fast (15-20F) and the engine starts fouling.... MORE
Jens, Great, did you beat him? What kind of Porsche? You might try and do a test before doing a new fuel pump. Try and take 6 or 8 layers of kitchen aluminum foil, crumple it a bit so you have some air space between layers and wrap either the fuel pump and/or the exhaust pipe. You might try and go one step further and take a wet red shop rag and wrap the fuel pump first then wrap in layers of foil. You can also take one or two layers of beer can cut open and wire it... David - No, the engine isn't in the correct/final placement just yet, just got excited and had to show somebody. I was thinking I was going to have to cut a radiused notch in top of the crossmember, but playing around last night I have it a little closer to finalized, I raised the motor about 1" and brought it forward (about 5-1/2") so the pulley is about 1/2" back from the steering rack. I plan to modify the oil pan to a flattened roadracing type, so the pan can be tucked up into the chassis. Hope to do... MORE
Hi Mike, Just as new cars have a maintenence schedule of changing the brake fluid every 2 years or 25,000 miles, you should do the same thing. Brake fluid becomes pretty corrosive in a short period of time if it's not changed routinely. So just do that and there likely won't be any corrosion on the naked internals. Ask an owner of a new car what it costs to replace an ABS module that has corroded because of not changing the brake fluid at the proper intervals. Warranty won't pay. OUCH! Jens, If you "kick the PCV" it will leak oil. It needs that to prevent / minimise oil leaks, particularly from the rear crankshaft "seal" Are you using a vented oil filler cap? You should be, which allows entry of air to ventilate the crankcase. If you are using a sealed filler cap it could make it pull too much oil vapour through Guy "Guy Weller" 33290... MORE
Hi Mike, I suspect that getting it anodized would be more than it's worth. Likely you can use it as is or just buy a rebuilt unit. The Morris m/cyls I do a lot with don't have that anodizing, but seem to have some sort of bright plating that seems to never give up! BTW, brake fluid is a pretty fair paint remover! Jens... Dyno There ya' go!!! About time!!!! A dyno session(s) is part of a "tuned" engine rebuild. It's the last part, to be specific. The ignition advance curve (rate) is exactly opposite of what works in a mildly cammed stock engine, considering the cylinder filling characteristics (torque curve) of the "hairier" performance cam profile is "back to front" when compared to the stock cam. Guys - I know this was discussed a while back, but what is the stock body height of a Midget? Was looking for the distance from the ground to the bottom of the rockers? or even better would be the distance from the bottom of the framerails to the bottom of the stock oil pan, that is if it sticks below the frame at all? I will probable lower the car slightly from stock but needed someplace to start from, don't want to scrub the pan off. My car is stripped to the tub and I'm trying to figuring... MORE
Hi In the process of rebuilding a tandem (dual) MC from early Sprite. Noticed that the pistons in these were painted/coated in black. It is wearing away on mine, some of it is fine while some is gone. I was just going to steel wool polish them smooth. What were these painted with? something not affected by hydraulic fluid. Some bits are interchangeable - tail lights are the same, mirrors are similar, but Midget ones need an extra angled plinth to sit at the correct angle due to the different curvature of the door panel compared to the 'B. Headlamp bezels again are slightly different, but you can generally make B ones fit. Without knowing the spec of your car (North American? UK?) I wouldn't like to comment on the air filter interchangeability. Wiper switch will probably be a two speed for the B and only a single speed for yours but again could be made to fit.... MORE
I joined this group because I just got a 1977 Midget that to my supprise started after sitting in a pasture for 6 years. I fitted new tires and filled up the brake and clutch with fluid and I am on the road. There are a few pieces missing though...Like tail lights, mirrors, headlight bezels, air filter, and wiper switch. There are some of these items on ebay but the are for a 1977 MGB. Jens... Timing..... I am an adult. So talk specifics to me. How "overadvanced" was the total timing from 30 degrees? Give me numbers. PCV valve.... Assuming you are running a stock intake manifold mounted PCV valve with a rubber diaphragm (and it's compatible "filtered" plastic oil filler cap), excessive oil burning would be the product of the rubber diaphragm which has become "porous". Jens I told you it was well worn! The other spindle wasn't nearly as bad, but decided to replace the pair of them while I was doing it. Clean the carbs? Nothing more than elbow grease! I washed them down thoroughly several times with turps (kerosense) using an inch paintbrush and changing the turp's when it got too dirty. I then scraped off the gasket material with a stanley blade and rotary wire brush cleaned the gasket surfaces only. The rotary wire brush is too harsh for the soft metal casting surface of the carb itself and leaves scratches... MORE
Nigel, You are too kind. Most glaring mistake was installing the throttle and choke linkages backwards. My only excuse is that I've never worked with dual carbs before. I also had to reset the float in one carb as it leaked gas out the intake. FYI-I set the mixture at 2.5 turns from flush and was pretty close to right on. The motor runs about 15-20 dgs. cooler and sounds better and is definitely more responsive. Haven't driven the car yet as I have to build a throttle cable bracket tonight or tomorrow. Jens I spoke to Burlen this morning as I mentioned and they were very helpful. I've ordered up two spindle kits, two rubber washers and two new AN needles from them. For interest and reference for others going down this route in the future the cost of drilling out the spindle holes in the carb body and putting in inserts for the new spindle is about =A320 GBP + VAT. The new spindle kit (comes with butterfly screws and gaskets) was =A36.87 GBP + VAT and the AN needle =A36.33 + VAT. The moral behind this is to avoid... MORE
