They (being they, I mean people who have been down this path before) reckon that a ground up nut and bolt rebuild of any classic car will take around about 2,000 manhours of work. I'll save you the calculation of that into real terms - its about 5 years of part time (by part time I mean every weekend and evening) work. Well Friday night I charged up the Midget battery and took it for the first spin of spring. The new Yokohamas are great and I live the wider chrome wire wheels! The tires stick out past the fenders (wings Nigel) about an inch or so, or just enough for that "hod rod" look I'm going for. Building on what Duncan said, the book by Horler will list the colors and have some good photos. One place you can see chips/buy paint from the Autocolor library (www.autocolorlibrary.com). Another practical source for me is "Restoring Sprites and Midgets - An enthusiasist guide" by Grahame Bristow. He doesn't list every nut and bolt, but he does show the break down of many systems. Hello everyone, I am a recent buyer of a battered old 1974-1275 Midget and am intending to carry out a total nut & bolt restoration job. Having never tinkered or worked on cars in my life, I dont know how long this intention will last, but at the moment I,m keen as mustard and would like as much help as possible. G'day Paul Sounds like you have a Mini Metro Turbo head gasket. It's hard and black, and in my opinion the very best you can get. Apart from being a denser material, it also has re-inforcing fillets between the cylinders. My race engine runs 13:1 compression, and I have NEVER blown a head gasket. All the guys racing Sprites and Midgets Down Under use this gasket. One guy I know has re-used his 3 times now (he's cheap) and even he doesn't blow them! The Payen part number is TAM1521, at least that's what it is on the packet... MORE
Nope, don't think I have any extra's. My book and engine says that you should look for the carbs & intake manifold from a 65-66 MGB & GT. They & I am running a pair of HS4's and if you cut the manifold (the 65-66 MGB... is A 1798 CC) and slide it together, mine has piece of hose and two hose clamps in the middle, it works just great and you don't notice any thing out of line. Paul, That sounds just like the one I described to you , that I pulled from Adrian's leaky 1275 so long ago. It didn't leak coolant, but did leak oil profusely out the pushrod side of the head gasket. Gerard "gerardchateau" 30983... MORE
It can be a reliable daily car if you look after it.. I ran a 1959 frogeye from 1998 to 2001 as my only car, clocking up in the r egion of 40K in that time. The car was not a prime example when I started and its still not a prime example. It had been modified, (1275, ribcase box , Disk front brakes, later diff, 3.9:1, Fiberglass bonnet,). Hi Colin, Thanks for the info on the head gasket. Upon close inspection, I found that there was an exhaust leak from the #4 cylinder out the side away from the pushrods and exiting up the back corner stud!! There was also coolant leakage through at least 5 of the coolant passages. This prompted some pitting on the cyl head so I had it resurfaced. The block seems to be OK in that respect. The threads had also lifted a bit on the block where the studs fit because they were quite tight and the threaded holes not chamfered.... MORE
Hi Ben If I was you I would try to buy a part restored 1500 that somebody has given up on. It's amazing how much people spend on the mechanics, blinkered to the fact that the shell is totally rotten. We did the same with an MGB when the engine blew. As well as a recon engine and new carbs we also got a set of wires,overdrive box, new brakes, a good interior, a silent back axle, 2 new tyres and a webasto roof! Not bad for =A3300 Take whatever you need from the donor car and then sell... MORE
Ben, My 1500 has Peco exhaust, oil cooler but no magnetronic ignition or kenlowe fan, from Nov 2002 until Oct 2003 it was in daily use and i covered 15000 miles in that time as well as several large jouneys includng Le Mans and back which all told was 1000 miles in 4 days. (I'm in the UK) My car is far from perfect but regular and pre-emtive maintainance is the key to reliablility. Once you've ironed out all the faults that the previous owners failed to take care of (in my case my own brother!) its pretty easy... MORE
hi people, just want some advice, the engine on my 1500 has just given-up! i need a car as a daily driver- must also beavble to make long trips of 300 =3D=0D miles plus easily if i buy a new engine, ehanust system, magnetronic ignition, oil cooler, ke =3D=0D nlowe fan, overhaul carbs, do you think a 1500 midget will be up to this? Hi All, Got a car in with an A+ engine in it and a coolant leak out the dizzy side. Nothing unusual there. It had a head gasket that's a very hard type of material, blackish dark grey, something I've never seen before, It also was installed upside down and backwards!!!!!!! But the question is: Is this a preferred head gasket material over the nice Payen copper gasket? That one I've learned to put on so it doesn't leak coolant. Head is at the machine shop being trued. Bill, There are at least 2 different sets of ribcase internal that are not interchangeable, so you your plan may not work. In some ways, re-assembling a trans is more tricky than an engine. You can make minor errors in an A-series engine and it will be forgiving about running anyway. Miss a couple details in the gearbox and you'll be locked in gear (or worse) again. I'm not saying you can't do it, but it requires more finesse and attention to detail. I'd say you'd be better off finding a already good one or having Paul A rebuild... MORE
