G'day guys. No argument - helicoil (or whatever) the holes. Two good reasons. 1.. One of the shock holes has a steel sleeve (that has already been mentioned) and the shock can be too weak to mount properly of you have 1/2" holes. 2.. A properly executed helicoiled hole is stronger than original. Firstly, the bolt now screws into a stainless steel helicoil, not a mild steel plate. And secondly, the securing thread is the helicoil, now probably 7/16" not the original 3/8", and the larger diameter thread takes more load. Next to my workshop is a guy who... MORE
Surely sounds like something is causing incomplete clutch release. Since it sounds like everything hydraulic is okay, and you're actually pushing the release bearing far enough, them some possibilities could be: a broken or damaged release brg. These usually last well, but it is possible to break the carbon piece. Possibly the pressure plate has some broken or bent fingers, or is not bolted up straight or tight. The pilot bush could be binding or damaged, the trans input shaft could be bent or burred up. The flywheel could be warped. There could also be a foreign object, say... MORE
How about a short sleeve/bushing in the hole to keep the bolts in position and then nuts with appropriate washers underneath? Nelson "Nelson Wittstock" 28617... MORE
Hi Trevor- Yes, alignment tool was used. Have played A LOT with bleeding, including pressure bleeding. Absolutely no air. Pushrod moves almost one-half inch. I'm told this is all it should move. I've owned four of these cars. I can tell you for sure something is wrong. While I am sure some driving will help, I fear the tranny will be junk inside of a week. Doing some reading and had a thought. Early slave cylinders were 7/8 bore. Late slave was one inch. What if I switch to an early slave? Will it not give me greater pushrod... MORE
the 1" slave, (with the 3/4" master it makes for a easy clutch), and I do have the Datsun slave cylinder with the L hydrolic line direction, but I think it is 7/8". I am going to a heavy duty oil/hydrolic line supplier in Portland tomorrow to try to get a "Street 90" for my 1" slave cylinder. If they can't do one in a short enough L, is there a Datsun or ??? that is short enough? What do the racers with a 5 speed (the 5 speed switches sides of the transmission of the slave cylinder) and... MORE
Guy Well the original supplying dealer was University Motor's - a very large MG dealer at the time, sadly they no longer exist. Yes they were, which is exactly why I said you cannot rely on the factory making a constant number of cars per day for dating purposes! N "amukdigiphoto" 28565... MORE
As I am sure you are aware, at certain times and with certain models, manufacturers maintain production levels well beyond demand levels and stockpile the surplus - we have all seen photos of acres of brand new cars standing out in all weathers for months on end before eventually being distributed to the dealers. ....only I don't think that Spridgets ever fell into that category, so I doubt that that was the reason in your case. OTOH the British Motor industry was rather prone to frequent strikes and walk-outs at that time. Maybe this would explain the "approximate" production... MORE
"....smell is the sense that is the strongest in evoking memories" Must be. As a kid I used to ride my bike down to the local seaplane base after school. We lived inland about 5 miles. The smell of salt water never fails to evoke fond memories of "the guys" and bright yellow Piper Cubs and J-3's on floats, sparkling in the sunshine. God, I loved that place. All gone now... supplanted by condos and office buildings, as is the Starlite Drive-In which used to be across the road from the seaplane base, wherein I spent many a romantic... MORE
The stud pattern is the same for early Metros, but I'm not sure when it changed. If you're talking 13" ones from a GTA or Advantage they might be after the change point. Early Turbo 13" ones should fit. The offset is different so you might get clearance problems unless you use spacers. Regards David "David Jacobs" 28552... MORE
G'day Alan And thank you Nigel. But this time - YOU'RE WRONG! "I'm sure Colin with all his records can give you a better estimate" Thanks Nigel, but actually I don't think I can help very much. All the 948cc and 1098cc cars brought to or built in Oz, were badged as Sprites. All the 1275cc cars were Midgets. As a consequence, it is VERY rare to see a Mk1 or Mk 11 Midget over here, or a Mk IV Sprite. They have to be private imports. And so, our Registrar has very little info on these cars. The... MORE
Castor Oil & Castrol (Castrol R) Got to admit, Dave, I've no clue 'cause I do not know whether the "early" Castrol Oils I grew up with in the late 50's & early 60's were vegetable oil or petroleum based, though I believe it was the later. And the Castrol's before that??? Castrol "R"....formulated for high rpm higher pressure, anti-foam, "racing" oil I would think but here again, not familiar the specific base or formula. But I bet Chuck Christ might know a little about the early Castrol Oils considering his Dad was in racing during Castrol's early days... MORE
Gee Nigel, I don't know whether you mean to be or not, but you really can be terribly offensive sometimes! To address your specific "you're wrong" comments: I have a BMIHT Certificate for HAN9/85286 (we paid for it) stating this car was built in October 1969. Ditto, a BMIHT Certificate stating that the first Austin Sprite, HAN10/85287, was also built in October 1969. Perhaps you have a better source of information than the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust? If so, please share it with us. Please re-read my email - I said "Now if they built the same number... Yeah... Vulcans are (were?) cool...thundrous as they shook the ground you were standing on. You could feel it "in your bones"!! As far as props go....radials...yeah... Besides the Merlin and later Sabre Napiers (Tempests, methinks?) the "choppy" radial (until they "turned up" at which time they began to sound almost "turbine" smooth) are also a favorite. But nothing (IMHO) beats the smell of castor oil and the staccato "brruppp, burrrup" of a rotary operating on a stick mounted ignition "kill switch" or button! :) Very kewl! :):) Cap'n. Alan I'm happy to give you an estimate on these build dates, but I'm sure Colin with all his records can give you a better estimate, perhaps he can also explain why they're not left hand drive as the VIN number suggests. G-AN3L-48589 Is a MkII Midget built around April- early May 1966. G-AN2L-24027 Is a MkI Midget (early 1098cc engine) built around end October - November 1963 And thank you for your offer of dinner, which I will gratefully accept should I ever be in your part of the world. G'day Alan (and Nigel) As Registrar of the Sprite Car Club of Australia, I am custodian to all our production records. I can tell you that the last Austin Healey Sprite produced was HAN9/85286, build in October 1969. The exact date was not recorded by the factory. HAN9U/84968 is 318 cars short of that last one. There were 20,552 Mk IV Sprites built between October 1966 and October 1969, an average of 18.77 per day. So on average, that's 17 days of production. "Your" car would have been built late September or early October 1969. The first Mk IV... MORE
David... A flat spot (most especially with a VP3 Kent 276+ cam) is not unusual with a 45DCOE using the larger 4.5 or 5.0 aux venturi. You will notice this carb configured for racing uses the smaller 3.5 aux vent which brings the main system "in" a little earlier in the game. Was using 1.4+ intake valves and a VP3 cam. Noticing this, I changed out my 4.5's for 3.5's and jetted upwards accordingly to 145 mains and 175 air correctors while retaining the 50F9 idle jets the carb came with. (Then I rechecked the ign. timing to make... MORE
David Yep, I had a Trace Certificate done some time ago (when it was still cheap!) and the dealer it was delivered to was University Motor's London, which I believe was quite a big dealership for MG' s at that time. It was first registered in July 1971 in Buckinghamshire, and as far as I'm aware it stayed all of it's life in that area - I purchased it from someone in Berkshire. There were 11 former keepers. I know no more than that. N "amukdigiphoto" 28476... MORE

Hi listers. First the question: I see that there are seperate part numbers for the front and rear sump/pan seals (those cork strips). I just got a Payen lower engine gasket kit and both strips looked the same to me. It didn't occur to me that they were supposed to be different so I didn't inspect too close and put them in randomly. Both protruded at least a 1/4" (probably more) at both ends when put in their sump grooves. Should the excess be cut off? If so how much? Or are they just supposed to compress? Now the... MORE
G'day all I have also had a Pertronix kit where the magnet wasn't a snug fit on the shaft. You can't leave it loose (obviously!) as your timing will wander. But you certainly can stick it on with some insulation tape under it on the shaft. We actually gummed it on with Blu-tak and it works fine. avagoodday Colin "Colin@SpriteParts" 28396... MORE
