Hello Folks I have just finished last spring on a 3 yr restoration on my 1971 MG Midget. The only thing I did not touch would be the motor. The PO said at the time of purchase that he had rebuilt the motor and it only had around 6,000 miles on it. Maybe he did maybe he didn't. My question is, if the timing chain goes what can I expect? Yes, Electric Fan well worth doing (IMHO). Mine is actually a mk2 Sprite but I have a Kenlowe fitted as a puller (i.e. inside the engine bay pulling air in through the rad) and the engine fan removed. I actually ignored the Kenlowe fitting kit which is a one size fits none Heath Robinson affair. I slung the fan on some brackets attached to the shroud. It's been like that for several years 20k miles and seems fine. Ava would have a different rad. of course but still possible I expect. It's a great mod beacuse it's win-win. The... MORE

Thanks your pics are helpful. It appears that the upper bolts are accesed from under the dash, correct? I have tried to remove the lower screws and bend the dash out for access but it has a lot of resistance. The dual gauge is above the steering column and limits access. "MARK " 23368... MORE

in fact, you can't actually remove the dash completely till you've taken the dual gauge out, because you can't separate the temperature capillary; you have to unscrew it from the engine end and thread it all back through the bulkhead. "David Jacobs" 23358... MORE

mid page at http://www.teglerizer.com/midgetstuff/interior2.htm you can see the line of holes where the dash bolts to the sheet metal. (pictures of dashboard not installed mid page) You should be able to 'approximate' where to start looking for the bolts by comparing stuff lower down. also...at the bottom of the dash, you have a few 'straps' that are the lower mounts for the dash. Kim , only a thousand dollars for all that work ? , and it certainly looks good quality from the pix on your web page. If you really have to sell, then good luck, but if there's apart of you that says, I'd really like to hang onto that car. Then you will find that all the bits you have taken off the car will fit inside it, stacked up. Put it in the corner of your garage with a dust sheet over it. Thanks to all for the advice and humor. I will not start it indoors on a carpet floor and if in if in a grocery cart will do so on level ground. At this point I think I will just push it under the big oak tree out back and use block and tackle to lower it back in and out as necessary. It is actually the transmission I am most concerned with testing before lowering it back in. I had the engine running fine before I took it out. Don "Don May" 23328... MORE

Re: Fuel Pump Pressure? Hey does anyone know what the fuel pressure should be coming out of the fuel pump on a 1978 1500 midget? Mine is 5 1/2 pounds. When I drive over 3500 RPM's / 60-65 MPH the gas goes to the front charcoal canister, fills it and chokes out the carb. I take off the bottom hose, drain and ok for another 20 miles. The ignition switch is giving me problems. It no longer springs back to the on position after starting the engine and the starter doesn't disengage when the switch is manually moved from start to on. I have taken the steering wheel off and am stuck at the plastic cowling surrounding the switch. The turn signal stem won't let me pull out the left 1/2 of the cowling and the right 1/2 seems to be stuck in place also. Any tips on getting the faulty switch out of the column? Don't! If there is water in it you need room for a header - for expansion - and that means all the hoses etc to give proper circulation, and you will be able to run it only for a few moments, and if there is not a header - how much money did you say you want to throw away on an unnecessary rebuild? On the other hand, why not take it apart and have a peek whilst you are there and save all the trouble and aggravation! Just a look inside the rocker cover will give you a... MORE

a friend of mine wanted to test a secondhand Triumph Dolomite engine before buying it, and simply connected top and bottom hose together, and with the temperature gauge connected, just ran it till it showed on the gauge - a minute or two - long enough to see if there were any unusual noises or anything. (the engine was 'mounted' in a supermarket trolley for this test!) This method is simpler if you don't have access to a water supply, but slightly more risky than Cap'n Bob's, as there is nowhere for the expanding coolant to go, so pressure... MORE

I must apologize to those who followed my progress report, just don't have the time nor the room anymore to work on my 67 Sprite. It is a 67 Sprite that is torn down and middle of restoration. It has a lot of body work done already and shouldn't take much to finish. The shell and doors were professionally sandblasted to bare metal. (cost over $400 for just that). Car is apart but well cataloged, small parts in Ziplock bags with labels, bigger parts in categorized plastic bins, shell on a dolly, new VB parts used cost over $600.... MORE

It was more - have midget, seen rear disks on other cars, want them on my midget, went out and bought them. He paid =A360 for two disks and calipers from the bre akers. That reminded me of a funny story my father told me. It seems a fellow had rebuilt a Midget motor and clamped it to some timbers to start it before he installed it in the car. He was doing this in an old house trailer that had a carpet floor (don't ask me why). Every thing was fine until he rev'ed the engine and it tipped over. The flywheel then snagged the carpet and ripped it loose from the floor. The motor ended up wrapped up in the carpet at the door of the trailer. The motor was unharmed... MORE

Don.... Is the water pump is operable and on the engine and belt hooked up? If so, hook up a hose (tape, whatever) and "feed" the motor thru the thermo cover letting it run out the back (block heater outlet) using a normal hose hooked up to a spigot at low flow velocity? And I wouldn't take a chance on a malfunctioning stadt, either. Go stadtless. Otherwise I have no clue since in summer temps., mine warms up virtually in a heartbeat...really. But I don't think this is the critical aspect of it, anyway. You see, without water circulation... MORE

I would like to set up a 1275 engine on a test stand just to start it and check if it is running ok. How many minutes can I safely run it without the radiator connected? Or is that something I should not do. Don "Don May" 23262... MORE

Thanks for the reply. It's very hard for me to explain what I need to know. The seal I purchased from Moss Motor clips over the ridge that runs from front to back on the area of the door opening on the main body. It is a system that to spread apart and slip over this ridge. Only troube is that once you do this the seal will not stay in place. That's the best I can explain it. Zegrod53@... 23242... MORE
