Roger, I totally agree, and do the same. Whatever it is, concentration on driving takes priority. Suspend anything else immediately whenever the need arises I rarely listen to the radio as most stations involve talk and talking distracts. I do listen to tapes of well-loved music which is familiar and does not distract. I also like the sound of the A- series, but sometimes want both. What detracts from listening in a Sprite is wind noise at anything like a decent (or is that indecent) speed, not the tuneful sounds of a well revved engine. My thought that I... MORE
Driving is driving, music is music . . . I do not like to mix experiences or my attention. Driving is a love affair between human, machine, and the road. I have a wonderful audio system at home and a recliner chair to sit in while I listen to it. Personally I do not like to talk while driving any more than I would in a movie. Goodness folks! "Failure to pay full time attention" Well, this is BS, anyway, Ed. Many years ago the FAA passed a rule which prohibits all but operational conversation from the time the aircraft starts an engine 'til the time the last engine is shut down, except while the aircraft is stopped on the ground while in taxi mode, or for operations above 10,000 ft. while climbing or descending or in "cruise flight" below 10,000 ft. Nelson... Frank used POR15 on his floors and they still rotted out beneath the coating. This resulted in an Italian burn....IOW, he was somewhat less than amused. Neither Diane, Tiffany or the cats could soothe him. His son, who was out destroying his VW at the time his Dad fell through the POR15 coated floor (at about 60 or so, traveling down the NJ turnpike) added fuel to he fire by failing to empathize while asking Frank for yet another coupla thousand bucks to rebuild his VW's blown engine, once again. Bob, A little while back I installed a pair of rear 5" speakers in the narrow space between the door pillar and the rear wheel arch. They fit really neatly and are only a few inches behind my head when driving. Out of town, there is no problem as I am not too bothered about the sheep listening to my choice of music. 'Cept when I wind up the throttle a bit I cannot hear anyway! I know what you mean about cutting out the ambient sounds with an earpiece. This is sort of why I thought maybe just... MORE
Alan, in the UK go to a motor factors and buy a tin of seam sealer. It can be trowled or brushed into seams after the first paint coats. It is compatable with paint finishes and although it hardens, it remains pliable enough not to crack. Don't use cellulose putty or fibreglass resin. They go hard, shrink, crack allow moisture in and generally don't do a good job. Petrol or parrafin is the best thing for removing the residue of any underseal, then finish off with a good engine degreasant. Guy UK, oop north "Guy Weller" 23798... MORE
Alan It seems you're following in my footsteps or viceversa, having done/doing this exact same job myself. Perhaps you can benefit from my experience. First off, forget using any kind of power tool on the underseal its a waste of time. The technique that I found works reasonably well on removing the underseal is as follows, I'm afraid however you tackle this job, it's not pleasant, will take ages is boring and messy as hell. I found using a heat gun and scraper worked really well getting off the bulk of the underseal. Just heat it up enough for... MORE
Hi, I've just spent the afternoon sitting in the engine bay of the 72 midget scraping all the PO applied black underseal type paint . a.. I can't get it all off by grinding or scraping , it just goes gooey and spreads around and clogs the flap wheel. b.. Any ideas for removal ?, Petrol, flamethrower (Brad?), or just keep scraping and sanding? c.. When I did get some of it off, I found some hard cream coloured putty* had also been applied to some seams before the original spray coat.(Damask ). This did chip off however. d..... MORE

Well, Guy Weller..... The tonneau when "down" would block one of those speakers mounted in the area (otherwise neat location, BTW!:) you speak of, Guy. So, I too will experiment with a single earpiece set-up initially and see how it works out. "Roger" on the ear plugs...used them all the time together with Dave Clark headset "gel" ear pads when flying the friendly skies. Audible sound was "behind us" in any event, most of the "hearing" taking place in the spine and bones (vibrations). Jim.... "Thanks", yourself!! :):) You either don't have a maint. manual or are not reading it, I guess. Well, no matter. :) You cannot check effective operation of the manifold mounted PCV valve by taking it apart. It is tested on a running engine at idle... if it is working correctly, the idle will increase by around 200rpm when you remove the "vented/filtered" oil cap (which you are using in accordance with your manual, right?:) For with respect to the manifold mounted stock PCV valve....there are no other restrictors in this system...IT is THE restrictor! Yep... Good quality speakers in hi-back seats is the way to go, for sure. Solves the "problem" except for guys like me who have a "personal problem" with hi-backs! :):) Then again, I never claimed to be the sharpest knife in the drawer. I personally dislike hi-back seats, despite their obvious spine and life saving qualities in certain types of "events".... because they block my peripheral vision, even moreso with the top in place. I hate this, to the extent I removed the headrests from my '74, converting the seats back to "lowbacks". I hate to have my senses... MORE
..sounds like your rear leaf springs to axle u-bolts need to be tightened. The whole axle can easily shift up to 2-3 degrees off line with the road direction. It should go exactly where YOU point it and NOT the other way 'round. It should never feel as though the "tail is wagging the dog". On rougher surfaces the car will "move" sideways in a controlled manner as it "skips" over rougher pavement but it should never "wonder" or feel "loose", despite the fact road shock may be transmitted to the steerng wheel. Can anyone give me the description of the restrictors that I think should be in the tube from the timing case to the PCV valve. I have just rebuilt my '68 1275 engine and it is sucking enough oil through the oil seperator to go through the engine. I tried a 1/8" restrictor and had much oil out the rear seal(screw). I then put a 5/16" inch restrictor closer to the PVC valve and it seems to do much better. I have found no information other than a reference to tube and restrictor in the Hayes manual. Thanks Jim... Hello to all I now have the steering wheel, cowling, turn signal stem assembly and wiper assembly off the steering column. How is the switch removed? I can't find any screws, etc. holding it on. My Haynes manual says I should be able to turn the key to the on position, depress the button and remove the entire barrel assembly. It won't work that way!! I also can't get it to the complete off position to remove the key. The key is somewhat bent in the barrel so I am afraid to work it too hard. My first thought... MORE
"I would suggest....Datsun 5-speed" Food worth thought, IMHO. Yes...the 5 speed simply "transforms" the car....for sure! Peace and quiet of operation, fully synchro with slightly lower first three gears for xcellent acceleration, while retaining the normal 1-1 4th and engine/fuel saving "overdrive" 5th. And "rebuilt" boxi available for 1/2 the cost of "stock" box (not that you'll probably ever need one considering the HP/torque of the original 210 the box was designed for....but, in the event!:) Cap'n. Michael I'd definately stick with the OE shock absorbers. Everyone I've heard of who've had the gas conversion done have not been that impressed with them. There is reaally nothing wrong with the OE shock absorbers when working correctly. I'd suggest either getting yours rebuilt if they need it or getting an exchange pair - there's not need to go to the expense of a a gas conversion. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 23753... MORE
Don It's extremely difficult to tell from those pictures the age or model, as by the looks of it, as you said, it has a mixture of parts from Sprites and Midgets on it, and you can't be sure what was original on that car. You have to make certain assumptions, and as this list has ably demonstrated in the past, assumptions are dangerous. It has a Sprite badge on the back, a Midget Grille on the front and Austin Healey Hub caps. If the boot handle is correct, this dates it to after October 1961 when it changed.... MORE
