Engine is out and I'm waiting on the 5 speed kit. Noticed a bit of seepage around rear of crank. Not bad at all. Just a little. Thinking this might me a good time to install a rear seal. Some have told me that if the seepage is small, DON'T TOUCH IT! Others have said to ALWAYS install a rear seal. What do y'all think? What seal kit should I use if I install one? Any tricks or things to watch??? Thanks much. Paul '73 RWA (almost 5 speed) "dfwip" 29616... MORE
Just "semantics", JC Just picked up your post....one of the only caveats to this rule might be thoughtful consideration as to replacing clutch parts any time the engine is pulled. I am sure there must be others but this would be too much work at this point! :):) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 29643... MORE
I purchased from Moss2 adaptor #235-875. In taking off the old canister, I found the adapter sits real close to the generator. the old canistor mounted on a small mount that in turn attaches to the engine block. the sole purpose of this appears to be to raise the oem canistor oil filter high enough to clear the frame that runs below that side of the engine. if I remove the threaded studs that this mount attaches to the engine block, can I mount the adaptor directly to the engine block with the supplied allen head studs? I think... MORE
Sure, Jim C., I understand. You're playing it conservatively on the safe side. I would, too, unless that used press. plate was basically new. Using used parts in circumstances wherein the engine must be pulled to replace same "in the event" is a bit of an "iffy" situation unless for whatever reason you don't mind putting yourself in this sort of situation. Me? I'd go with a new plate already modified by Rivergate. You don't want any problems and Rivergate doesn't want you to have any (with their kit), nor would Paul, were it his kit. #1, both are... G'day Terry I think Trevor could be on to the problem. It sounds like you are fitting the clips upside down. There is no way the two "ears" should hit the bodywork - they will face out from the body at about 45 degrees. The flat side of the clip should be flush with the body. If you are fitting them upside down, a small washer will not help - the trim will be loose after it is fitted. And I certainly would not suggest sliding the trim on - you are guaranteed to scatch the paint. The scratch... MORE
Well, Chuck... This is a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional, multi-interest normal human being bugeye group!!! Sorta. :) The tilt-front bonnet will tend to go too far forward. A simple fabricated cable/ bungee cord system within the engine compartment fastened to the inside of the bonnet in appropirate places will prevent going too far forward "over-center". I can understand using it for the engine bay, but there aren't that many parts of the interior where the paint is exposed. However, spraying the interior cockpit will give you some practice using the paint before doing the engine bay etc. I'm assuming that this is not the first time you've refurbished/restored a car? David I think the silver on blue badges were for cars up to GAN5-118599, where there were one on each wing, the blue on silver ones were from GAN5-118599 onwards where only one was used on the passenger side wing, and these are the stick on ones. Not sure about why the BL logo wasn't used on cars exported to Arab countries, but apparently it was substituted for a 'unique' MG logo instead. My hunch tells me this was more to do with 'branding' and that the MG logo would be seen as having more 'prestige' in the Arab... MORE
Having now extracted the engine from the car I have found its Engine number, whihc is FP4615F, I think this is a proper midget engine. But its defieantly a pinky metalic red. Dad says that this colour indicates a factory recon unit, I thought these were Gold, but aparently that's austin engines, truimph painted thier recon motors a pinky metalic red.I might re-paint it black Stewart "Ford Prefect" 29472... Hi, Jim C. Comments..Rivergate clutch set-up... Running a Cooper S cammed 1293 with cam advanced 4 degrees for Metro inlet timing giving very torquey low and mid-range punch. No clutch problems in 6,000 miles. Ran Judson Supercharged (both 4 & 6 psi "wheels") stock 1275 for about 5,000 miles before realizing blower not compatible (as is) with engine size. Never had a problem with the Rivergate clutch during this time which included some pretty rouch acceleration runs in 3rd & 4th up steep grades. No clutch problems. I find the Rivergate clutch set-up to be more positive in "engagement"... MORE
Nigel, I had exactly the same problem with the bumper mount and I still have not decided weather to make or buy new tubes as I have no seen them in Moss etc . Can you tell me if you made them or where you got them please. Trevor Thanks for that explanation, it's kind of what I expected it to be, and as =3D=0D you say regarding the down sides, it's exactly why I don't like using them. There's been very few nuts/bolts/screws I havent been able to remove using =3D=0D heat and brute strength, but I guess heat is not really an option on the windscreen frame - further fuelling my concern. Theres only been a couple that have beaten me and caused problems. The first was on the long bolt on the axle casing that retains the rebound stra =3D=0D ps - that one... MORE
Bob- I can't wait. Have the engine out already! Talked with Rivergate, and due to moving into their new shop, was advised they were just now filling November orders. It would be several months wait. Given that I am at the end of a ten year project, I want the car running the first day it gets above freezing in Ohio (which will probably be mid July). I had also heard that the Riverside clutch set-up could be an occasional problem. Apparently they use the MG pressure plate but a Toyota throw-out bearing. Not sure of the disc. Paul... MORE
I've only put about 500 miles on my Rivergate conversion. I initally had questions about the custom clutch. I thought the trowout bearing was a datsun part? Anyway... I was concerned about being able to replace the clutch should rivergate not be in existence when the time came. However, I talked to my local transmission shop, and they said it would be no problem to fabricate. I plan on putting some serious miles on the Midget this summer. Ask me again at the end of the year how it is going. Otherwise I am happy with the clutch performance.... MORE
Easy-outs are tools used to extract a bolt that has sheared. You drill a hole down into the bolt, tap the easy out down into the hole, then carefull y turn the easy-out and bolt back out. In reality, what often happens, is th e easy-out continues to enlarge the drilled hole and never really bites enough. Or, worse: the easy-out breaks and then you have something 10 time s harder than the original bolt to try and remove. Easy-outs have helped me many times, but when they don't work they cause huge problems. "Trevor Jessie" 29440... MORE
Paul... I got my first before I joined the list and knew of Paul's kit. Got my second from Rivergate 'cause Bill Perry was building my curent engine anyway, and the one which I had initially gotten used (and put God knows how many more miles on) was good for full core credit on a new "rebuilt". I mean, I was setting up the car for essentially the balance of my life on the planet so I went all the way! :) You're gonna love it. :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 29434... MORE

Nigel, I am very afraid to post any pix you could see. The car is in three colors of paint plus the original Brookland green. (Seeing what looked best, ya know). I have lowered the front with 1275 springs but not the rear just yet. I'm running American Racing Mags 5.5 inches with 165 x 70 tires. I've cut off the front bumper supports and sold off the rubber bumpers. The interior is new and pretty well sorted out. McGee runs and drives well except for my often mentioned clutch problem. I will be pulling the engine this spring... MORE
Hi, My local scrapyard has a set of twin SUs fitted to 1500TC Triumph saloon - same engine as the 1500 Midgets. They are at the moment still on the car, complete with manifolds and linkage and I think it is all there. There is some surface corrosion - white oxidation - but this would clean off easily. Anyone interested in these let me know quick and I will go grab them before someone wrecks them. Guy "Guy Weller" 29315... MORE
The future 200 watts is correct El Capitan. I just had an error in stating that my current setup puts out 20 amps when it should have said 20 watts. As for the future 200 WATTS IT IS but probably in the '69 CGT as to provide a bit more security (locking doors and an alarm system). I like the visual of the Memorex commercial :) It is the set-up I had in 1992 Civic Si prior to having a stupid driver try and shoot through an intersection at the same time as me in 1995. Colin Well, I think the concensus is that their 'original' finish was indeed 'natural' but rebuilt ones were painted black all over. I was in two minds whether to leave them natural and spray a clear coat over them or to paint them silver. My main concern was to finish them in such a way as to protect them from the elements, so the paint won. I never set out to build a 'concours' car, that was never my intention - the car will be used and used regularly and enjoyed for what it is - so slavishly following... MORE
On the 1500 there is an extra piece on the front of the inner wheelarches, that is not there on earlier cars, however it is welded onto the front original 1275 panel rather than done properly and a new panel!, this is then welded to the rear part of the front panel just outboard of the RB mountings. I think I will just bolt it on.. the engine has to go near vertical to get it out because of the normally non removable front panel! and as I still want to fit an overdrive box (if I ever find... Tonight, while working around the house, I found an unusual use for a speedo cable. The bathtub drain was very slow this morning. Before I took off to defensive driving class, I removed the screen, and pulled out enough hair that is looked like I had removed a small rat from the drain. Upon returning home, I was told that the tub would not drain. This was puzzling, as it was at least moving slow that a.m. I tried a plunger, and hair clog remover, to no avail. The drain just would not move. I then remembered that I... MORE
Stewart What part was spot welded to where? On mine, I just undid all the bolts and off it came - unless things were different on 1500's. I wouldn't worry too much about re-spot welding it in position the bolts are enough to hold it in position. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 29232... MORE
