I have a 1972 Midget with correct motor. I am working through an issue and I want to replace my valve seals. It looks to me from all of the parts catalogs that on the 1275 there was only a valve seal on the intake valves, and not on the exhaust valves... am I correct in this? Guys... Aldon (UK) has about every Series A engine tune ever thought up for these motors...in their computers. Their computers know more or less exactly what advance curve will go with your state of tune. It may not be spot on, but it'll be awfully damn close! Bearing in mind this will be a more or less once in a lifetime expense, you might want to email them and see what they can do for you? "Generic" Aldons ("Reds" or "Yellows") are probably what Moss (and others) are carrying and selling in terms of a "generic" curve fors both... MORE
Well, I tried to look but file did not open. could you e-mail me one? Is it a 1275 with the 69 tranny? stuck in gear, have you tried all the fixes that have been posted? When was the last time it ran o.k.? Bill French HiltonHead frenchww@... 32473... MORE
I've got a 45D4 type dizzy (non-electronic) on my 1275, which Moss sold as a 'performance' item - not sure if the distributor drive is non-standard to mate up with the shaft thing in the 1275 engine, but it definitely fits! (1275 Metros probably had them as well, those that didn't use Ducellier) Being non-standard/original, I can see how it wouldn't appeal to you though, Nigel! Regards David "David Jacobs" 32459... MORE
Well, I watched the show, "Car Search", on the Speed Channel, and it was very interesting. FYI, the show is about a group of people who have been given some money to buy a collector car each week and take it to the Barrett Jackson Classic Car Auction to see if they can buy low enough and sell high enough to make some money in the end. Sort of like the UK show where people take 200 pounds and buy flea market stuff and take it to the auction and see if they make money. In this show they... MORE
Hi guys Whilst clearing through some of my 'stuff' to do with the car, I've come across this. It's a NOS Lucas Electronic Ignition Model 45DM Distributor and AB14 Amplifier, which I beleive is a straight swop for the 45D dizzy as used in the 1500's. It's new old stock - never been used and comes with all the bits and fitting instructions. I'm probably going to sling it on ebay, as it's no good to me or my 1275. Anyone know what kind of money this is worth? tia Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 32450... MORE
Well, I thought I had a local buyer for my Sprite, but it seems to not have worked out. I thought I would check the list and see if I can get an opinion on what it might be worth. Itsa: 1969 Sprite(clear Texas title says 1964, but a typo must have occurred way back before I purchased it in New Mexico about 3 or 4 years ago) Number plate (beneath carbs) matches vin on title. You may recall: It's stuck in first gear. Crap!! Stuff I have done: Porsche 914 Seats Roll bar Tonneau cover adapted (lots of... MORE
Close but no cigar - the MkI/II Spridgets with 1098 engines had electric rev counters, though again, this is only a clue, not a definitive identifier of a car's age - this is just the sort of thing that gets swapped around when the tacho drive gearbox fails! Regards David "David Jacobs" 32430... MORE
In the process of removing the rear axle I've run into a bit of a frustration. It looks like it will be necessary to remove the backing plate for the brakes in order to remove the axle fastening for the quarter elliptical spring on my Mk 2 Sprite. After removing the brakes I am unable to turn the large nut holding the bearing in place. Working on the left side I know it will have to be turned clockwise but after flattening the locking washer I am still unable to budge it. Will it be necessary to buy a... MORE
My 79 just started this weird thing: when starting up, the red light comes on and stays on for approx. one minute. Revving the engine slightly makes it glow brighter. The altenator belt is adjusted properly, the connections all seem clean and tight, and it's a six month old Diehard, so I don't think it's the battery. Any of you good folks have any ideas? Is this harmful? It runs perfectly, lights, heater, wipers, all function normally, but it's never done this before... Thanks, George "chuibuddy" 32420... MORE
The lack of door handles sounds right, but the biggest and most definitive mark of a Mk1 midget is the rear suspension, and its also the main cause of death (to the car!) if it's a mk1 midget it will have quarter elliptic springs not semi ecliptics like later sprites/midgets. I also suspect the MkII MG and MkIII AH had an electric rev counter, which the Mk1/II did not, this is a mechanical device driven off the back of the dynamo from a reduction device. IIRC a 948 A-Series engine number starts with a 9, the 1098 starts with... MORE
Thanks to all for the comments on the tire replacement. I'd like to go with a slightly wider tire just to fill in the wells a little and now that I know that they shouldn't cause a problem. I thought we were so close to finishing the car up this weekend and preparing to haul it home. All we wanted to do was simply replace the rear springs. But, as the karma has been with this one, the task turned out not so simple. We ended up having to break the bolt in the front bracket of each side... MORE

Fellow listers, Any 1500 listers out there who have done a clutch replacement? I am at the point of refitting the new unit and all three of my manuals instruct me to mount the drive plate with the side saying "flywheel" towards the flywheel. Great logic except mine doesn't say anything. Neither does the one I'm replacing. If someone knows how to tell which way round to mount the bloody thing I'll have my engine back installed in a jiff. 1972 chrome bumper Still working on my badge bar. Found I had to bolt the bumper on then fit the badge bar using another bumper fixing nut to hold it on. As regards the repro spot lights and the MGOC fixing brackets I had to make reducing sleeves so the spotlight fixing nuts did not go through the much too large fixing hole. MGOC say the hole in the bracket is OK for an original Lucas Blue Spot spotlight but not fo the repor type. Terry "terry.isherwood" 32394... MORE
Finally got a chance to follow the wires for the non working brake lights. The stoplight switch doesn't complete the circuit and light the brake lights, they do work when I use a jumper wire and short across the switch. It is located on the end of the MC housing inside the engine compartment. Anyone know the tricks to replacing the switch? TIA Neil "Neil Hernan" 32401... MORE
David, I think you stated it backwards. Typically the disc has a slightly offset hub with the springs protruding away from the center line. Those springs are what might interfere with the flywheel bolts, so they should be tucked into the clutch cover. Usually, if you put the plate up to the flywheel wrong side to it, the springs will contact the bolts. Just flip it over then. Best, Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 32399... MORE
When I first got the bug for these cars, it was with a 65 Midget. I bought a 73 with no title for the drivetrain, and put it in the 65. The 1275 HAD t he hookup on the filter mount (spin on) so I just hooked the wire to it lik e it showed in the Bentley. A few months later, on my way home from Fort Wo rth, the light came on. That had me sweating till I got home, checked the b ook, and saw that all I needed to do was change the oil. This... MORE
G'day Brad Glad you noticed that the new Pontiac GTO was designed and built in Oz. It's the Holden Monaro fitted with the Callaway Corvette engine and an uglified US nose. The original Oz nose is much nicer, but I think there was a bit of the "not made here" syndrome affecting the redesign. There is a local Holden dealership about 200 yards from my Workshop. I will get prices on the CORRECT badges on Monday. avagoodday Colin "Colin@SpriteParts" 32370... MORE
How do you get that #@#**# key back into the fulcrum pin? I tighted the bolt backed it up until I could feel the key slip into the slot. It locks everything it place nicely, but the thread part doesn't show up at the other end so I can put the nut ont. I've grease the key, frozen the key, lubed it, no luck. And when you hammer the sh*t out of it, it pens, and distorts. Is it OK to grind it down a little bit to make it fit? thanks, Bruce "redrider417" 32368... MORE
It's part of the bolt-on filter head. The only one I have ever seen is on the canister type, not the spin-on. I have an engine from a '69 Midget and it was standard equipped with the cannister type. The sensor is not present, so it must have been done away with by the time the spin-on type was implemented. I know this was original, because I pulled it from a car in 1970 when it was less than a year old (wrecked). Gerard "gerardchateau" 32367... MORE
Also, be careful how you (or careless tyre fitters) jack the rear of the car up - try and avoid putting load on the drain plug - it's not unknown for the female threads to strip when this is done - you DON'T want to have to deal with that! David "David Jacobs" 32360... MORE
Just bolted up my R front suspension-new coil springs, shock, rebuilt kingping, bushings the works. But a question. On the bottom of the kingpin, where it mounts into the pan, I installed the 2 cork washers that came with the kit. Now when I put in grease, it seems to flow out quicker than it did before, on either side of the kingpin. Is this normal? Grease also flows out quicker everywhere on the kingpin where there's a zerk. Is this because there is no hard grease backing things up? Should I be concerned? Plus - those corkwashers seem strange. Would... MORE
That's usually a pretty easy fix. You can try two things, one at a time. Drain out the oil. Then use a tooth brush and solvent to clean out the threads in the housing. Frequently there are little bits of "stuff" there! Clean the drain plug so it has no trash bits in the threads and wrap it with teflon tape, like the plumbers use, and put the plug back in. Does the trick about 90% of the time. For the remaining 5 or 10%, do the hole cleaning bit AFTER you have run a 1/2" pipe tap in... MORE
David, On an engine with a badly worn rocker shaft it will pump oil under pressure from under the rocker bushes faster than it will drain by gravity down the push-rod holes. Once the level builds up above the ends of the valve guides - which may take a mile or two at medium to high revs, the stem seals on the valves no longer control the entry of oil down the valve guides. Then the blue smoke starts. Guy "Guy Weller" 32331... MORE
