Hello, Couple of questions I have hopefully some one can solve them for me. My Car is Uk 1500cc 1976 Midget First my car does not indicate tothe right when the steering wheel is dead straight. The lights does not come up and the dash board and the clicking noise is far more rapid than it should be. However when I turn the steering wheel a small amount in either direction it works fine. ( And i get strange looks when I have to sway across the road so my car will indicate) The left hand indicator works fine.... MORE
I would suggest removing the air cleaners such that you can look down the carb throats and see the slides (we are talking SU's here, are we not?). Stick a finger in each and raise the slides up and look for the "frog". If you raise a slide up, then let it drop, it should lower smoothly and both slides should "sit" the same in the carb bores. Something may also be lodged in the throttle plate beyond the slide...something like...FOAM??? OK, spill it...foam? Come on...we need some entertainment... "Jim" 36662... MORE
Dear Spridgetland, Before I operate I wanted to throw this our for comment or ideas. Dear old McGee, my 75 Midget now has dual 1.25 carbs and a manifold from a 1300 Spit. New carb needles have been installed and the motor runs well except..........it idles at 2000rpm! I've sprayed down the intake connections to head and carbs with WD and couldn't detect a leak. Other info: The motor may have accidentally ingested foam air cleaner material( I wont say how but it was stupid). The motor idled at the proper rpm when I first got it going then... MORE
If you know the cooling system is sound, and the engine is correctly tuned, then your problem is simply that the cooling system on these cars is inadequate. An electric fan won't fix that. Drain the rad and fill it with water (no anti freeze) plus a corrosion inhibitor. That will solve the problem. "joe blxfstz" 36649... MORE
Terry, the hoses go in place of the rigid pipe from the block to the filter head and the cooler itself usually goes in the nosecone in front of the radiator. For remote filter units, look at MGB V8 conversions (and factory V8s) as they use them - absolutely no room for an engine mounted filter there. David "David Jacobs" 36635... MORE
David I did measure it and it was not that easy to be exact but it was going to be tight or not go. Will try for a conventional oil cooler. Does it go in place of the pipe from the block (banjo fitting) to the top of the oil filter screw on bit? As a temporary measure, you could get one of those aerials with a swivel/ball and socket at the base and turn the rod part 90 degrees from it's normal mounting position on a flat surface. It'll stick out a little from the side, but will fill the hole and do the aerial thing, till you find the proper type. David "David Jacobs" 36630... MORE
Hi Rick, My midgets vin number starts with GAN5 and it has a 1275 A series engine, so I think you are maybe wrong about the A meaning 1500. Beckers1330 "beckers" 36611... MORE
The 'A' origianlly denoted an engine of under 1200 cc, Whch till the introdution of the 1275 was what the midget/Sprite had, however, this was never changed, so effetivly GAN means an MG midget, HAN means Austin Healey and nothing more. (G actually stands for garages, H for healey). The 'A' does not denote 'A-Series' Stwart engine, so that one GU47T930592P numbers help me for 4/1/2005 "zaphod19692000" 36616... MORE
What I had read (I believe from Terry Horler) was that the "A" stood for the A series engine. However, when MG went to using the Triumph 1493cc engine in the Midget, they just kept the A in there as a tradition, or so as not to acknowledge the Triumph implant. :-) "Adam J. Kopff" 36615... MORE

Sprites started with HAN, Midgets with GAN. My Mk1 midget was a GAN1, my Mk3 midget is GAN3. Y can contact the British Motor Industry Herirage Trust, who will provide you with all the information you want. Anybody know anything about a Bear Series 2 engine analyzer? The community college my wife works at is having a surplus sale, sealed bids, on a bunch of junk that includes this analyzer, a drill press, two lathers, a milling machine, a welder, and a compressor. I went by to look at them yesterday but was informed by the AH in charge that I needed an appointment. I will go Monday at 3:00 and report back if anyone is interested. The stuff is in El Paso, TX. If it is the 215 ci all alloy Buick V8 then you can get MG badged rocker covers and twin SUs for it!, it is the exact same engine that became the Rover 3.5 litre V8 and powers most range rovers and the MGB GTV8 hence Moss will sell you some rocker covers with MG cast in them that will bolt striaght on the engine. Although 200BHP stock is proabbly Gross rating, not the modern DIN, probbly more like 150 if you want to use the modern ratings. Even the Twin Plemumn SD1 Rover Vitesse only had 220BHP DIN!... MORE
Listers - The enigine/trans is a 1963 all aluminum Buick V8, 215 ci. (I'm told the 4barrel carbed ones are high compression, something like 11 to 1 and are good for a stock 200hp) The trans is a Borg-Warner T-50, aluminum 5 speed, I think it's from a late 70's Chevy V8 Monza. The added frame rails are 2" square steel tube, not sure I needed that much added to the sides of the original frame rails (probably could have used a 1" x 2" on it's side) but boy did it ever stiffen up after they were installed.... A fellow is offering them on ebay for $59.00 and mentioned that my model would run $89.00 which I have heard is an excellent price, I just want to make sure he ships the correct model of petronix electronic ignition. Well, Dave.... The biggest/best change you can make is to bring up the compression ratio next time you have the head off, unless you're taking it apart for piston/ring replacement. Taking the head from 21cc down to 19cc should be good for just under 8.5-1 and were you to go to 8.8-1 pistons next time around, the combo would be good for between 9.0-9.3-1 or so. You could take the head down to 16.4cc but now you're down to min. thickness for the head (strength, cooling, head-gasket issues, etc.). Besides mechanical stuff, better breathing will help. Hi Aaron, Leave off the lock tabs. Don't use them! They're so soft they tend to give a false reading to the torque/stretch value of the bolts. If you can read the "F" properly. (Not backwards!) on the washer when it's in place, you've got it right. Remember to center the front seal before tightening all the cover bolts. Do it by leaving the cover bolts loose, so the cover will move a bit, then put the front pulley in place. Tighten a couple or 3 bolts, take off the pulley and tighten the remaining bolts. Hey Paul Yesterday was the first time I was able to get my Sprite on the road since the 5 sp converison. All I can say Is SWEET. Milling the flywheel seem to let the motor rev faster. The Datsun 5 sp is great, the car seems to fly now. Was only able to go on my local back road, can not wait to get all the pieces put back on so I can Go for a real ride. The weather man says it will be in the 50's by the end of the week. (he has lied before)... MORE

wfo yes it has good suspension ,i got the springs, brakes, swaybar, and urathane bushins from moss motor. the car set about a 1/2 inch of the ground. for the rear im using a rear from a s-10 2.43 gears, and one set up with3.73 gears. i have takin the car out to the drags it did a 13 flat at 113 mph spinning the tires down the track with the 2.43 gears. as for the conversion i didnt do it but the guy that did said it was simple. i bought the car from my old boss who...
