While thumbing through the "Original Sprite & Midget" book I checked on the GAN number of what is registered as my 73, which I assumed it was. Turns out it was built in Sept. 1972, in fact I also discovered 9/72 clearly marked on the ID tag. Alan I can't give you a source for fibreglass frogeye rear ends, because I simpl =3D=0D y do not know of any company who makes them, although there are probably plenty about. I do know however that Paul Banham makes a 'Frogeye' replica kit, which is =3D=0D based on a mini 'donor' car and that the Frogeye outer fibreglass panels ar =3D=0D e exactly the same dimensions as the original Frogeye. Guy Yes I did know of it, but couldn't remember the name of it, all I could remember is that its got a red cover with a couple of yucky pics on it! I've seen a couple go through ebay.co.uk, but they've always gone for more than I was willing to pay (which wasn't a lot!) and from what I can tell it is one mans story of his Midget restoration. Alan, That appears to be a bugeye rear. As far as I know, and others will undobtedly chime in here, the only way to achieve that on your 73 is to convert to a bugeye tub, or use a rear clip from one. The top in those pics look a lot like an original bugeye hard top. These are sometimes available on ebay, or sometimes a lister runs across one. The nose is available in the US. My '65 Riviera blue Midget has an original white removable hardtop which seals out the weather just fine - and it is quiet. I love the hard top and I do use it a lot here in Pennsylvania when the weather isn't so nice. Warning - they aren't light (the original ones at least.) When it's off the car it is very easy to carry around by yourself but you can't reach far enough over the car from any direction to be able to simply lift it on or off by yourself - it isn't a one man job... Steve It's not an easy book to get hold of for some reason. I didn't even know it existed until I happened to spot one on ebay.co.uk by chance and got it. I think Amazon do have copies of it. I wouldn't normally advocate buying all books on Midgets and Sprites (lot of crap ones out there and the Lindsay Porter one is now very dated) but I've found this one to be invaluable for advice and reference, and pretty much rely on it exclusively now I'm almost at the 'fitting' up stage. When soldering new spade terminals and the like onto the end of old wires, the copper wire always seems to be black. I take this to be oxidisation and try to remove as much as possible before soldering. Using a resin cored solder the flux does not seem to clean the wire effect ively. crimping surely just traps the oxidisation between terminal and the copper, so not an effective joint. Scotchloks are not an option IMO. Any thoughts / recommendations? What is the cause of this blackening of th e wires? Is it due to a bad earth (ground)... MORE
I have resisted several "opportunities" to buy a hard top for my Sprite. Why? Because it is "soft" to drive with the soft top up, and even "softer" to co nvert to a top on a semi-permanant basis for the whole winter!! And, Because on the occasions when I am enough of a "wimp" to put the soft top u p, the increased mechanical noise drives me nuts. The car just sounds so m uch better with the top down and they must sound awful with a fixed hard to p holding all that noise in! Guy "Guy Weller"... MORE

I haven't done this Paul, but it comes up for discussion on the spridget list occasionally. Some list member maintian that the spacer is superfulous and leave it out when going to tapered bearings, while others argue it is needed for addtional strength and go through the process of shimming it until it is "perfect". Again, I don't know the answer, but maybe my attempt will spur some of the more knoledgable....Crash, are you on midgetsprite? Crash in Reno is a proponent of no spacer if I remember right. Robert B. G'day Paul et al The travel at the slave cylinder end depends on: a.. the length of the clutch pedal from pivot point to the pedal pad (there are two lengths - bet you didn't know that) b.. the height of the pedal off the floor (which is adjustable on cars with dual clutch/brake master cylinders) c.. the amount of free play at the top of the pedal d.. the master cylinder bore size e.. the slave cylinder bore size f.. the amount of "lost movement" due to wear in bushes, clevis pins etc etc If you know answers...
