All sorts of unnatural stresses on the crank et c Assuming it's a clean engine there should be plenty of oil down there, in f act should be almost flooded most of the time. Is it ? Did the pushrod drill a hole in the cam follower (the push rod rotates whe n running normally - if it sticks you get abnormal wear )or did the cam 'we ar' away the base of the follower. Jeremy erm! It was pretty much in daily use before I took it off the road about 15 year =3D=0D s ago now I guess, and it's been dry stored in my garage ever since. I know both sides of the front suspension was replaced by a PO very shortly =3D=0D before I bought the car, I don't know if the TRE's were replaced at the sam =3D=0D e time, but I assume they were checked. I've done less than 5k miles in it since I've had it, and its still done le =3D=0D ss than 100k miles in... MORE

Nigel, et al Nut splitters do work , if you don't buy cheap ones , low cost is good - ch eap is not. Same with all tools really. When replacing track rod ends etc there's nothing wrong with using a small amount of anti seize grease or LM (Low Melting temp.) (I like LM10 )I also use WD40 if the thread is trapped at each end and is virtually air tight so the WD40 doesn't evaporate. It's the mechanical stretching of the threads that lock parts together. Nigel, When being brutal with the steering rods / arms make sure you don't bend th em. Another effective way of making the track rod end flats useful is to grind the flats parallel and obviously closer together to be a good fit in a good open ended spanner. You should be changing them as a matter of course any way at only =A36:50 or each, so don't be afraid of damaging the TR ends per se. Well it's gotten colder and we've turned the clocks back for one but, really not sure. Coincident events would include the awful fires in our state of California on our west coast wherein 3600 homes have been lost. For the past few years we've had a group of enthusiasts gather in Madison WI (USA) for a bit of post-Thanksgiving turkey Sprite dismantling and/or rebuilding called Save Our Sprites. You might try going through the group archives, Pete. A while back there was a bit of discussion about having the master cylinder resleeved. That has got to be a lot better priced than buying a new unit. I can remember the name of the place that was said to be avoided but I couldn't locate quickly the place that was recommended. Actually, the reason we had no aerial equipment is because the City and County did not want to spend the money to have same (ie.Padres, Chargers, etc.). If what Mike says checks out and the diff looks okay, check the transmission/motor mounts. I had a similar sound and I guess the body carried or amplified the sound of the drive-train flexing because after I replaced the mounts, the sound stopped. Jack Texas "austinbud2002" 26390... MORE
As of this morning, they both are in custody but there is some question if they are really the cause. The story is that they were hunting and got separated. One started a small fire to signal the other one. There was a huge wind change and it got out of control. It really was a small fire and only was about 20 to 50 acres for over 12 or 15 hours. To all my friends, many of which have inquired about the fires here in San Diego, it is devistating!!! Box score, approx 350,000 acres burned, about 1,400 homes burned to the ground, 900 out buildings burned down, 14 people dead, still evacuating towns on Wed night. The fire burned within 3 miles of my house. No real danger but lots of smoke and ash and bad air. No postal delivery on Monday, all schools still closed and no containment yet. Rod... Nigel may be right (probably is because his reasons are sound) but, go the "inexpensive" Cap'n Bob's suggestion first because grease in the steering rack will cause the same symptoms of heavy steering and an unwillingness to self- center and it's a lot less expensive fix, in the event!! :):) There is nothing "wrong" with the front end suspension set-up other than it's rather "crude" but Nigel is absolutely correct in that premature wear is caused mainly by a lack of proper maintenance as in not following factory recommended lubrication schedules.
