Cap'n Bob, Appreciate the insight. The last 1275 I drove was a 73 back in 1981. Didn't know jack about such cars so comparison's are impossible. I was planning to lower the rear of the car with a block arrangement that raises the rear axle where it attaches to the spring. Since fitting the new wheels and tires I'm not so sure about this. I had to do some sugery on the rear to eliminate the "tuck-in" flange for clearance. The front wheels were even worse. Had to raise the wheel cutout an inch. Will probably flair them. Do... MORE
Well, Rob... Vicky B. offers a rear spring lowering kit at a very reasonable price so you wouldn't be out much if this approach didn't work. Things at work have finally settled down from the past few months. We have gotten a second weekend off in a row, and I was able to get the mechanic from the truck shop to come over to my house this a.m. at 8:30. Some of you know, the 68 Sprite locked itself into first gear a while ago. It also had the original engine it rolled out of the factory with still in it, all smoking and original. If I am to repair the tranny, I will replace the engine, if only temporarily, to fix the original one.... MORE

Nigel, I certainly respect your desire for originality and admire the effort you are putting into the restoration of your car. The propensity over here to modify these cars, perhaps more so than the British, I am sure is influenced by the fact they are still relatively plentiful on this side of the pond. Rubber bumper cars in particular are very inexpensive here in California because many collectors dislike the rubber bumpers and see them as a bastardization of the original design to satisfy auto laws in the US and the stringent smog regulations in California. Don, I currently own a 1500 and have done for about 8 years but only driven 1275's (in various states of tune) so I don't know how objective my observations are but here goes... For standard vs standard the 1500 certainly has more torque and IMO is perhaps easier to drive around town in traffic althought at pretty subective i guess. It also has syncro on 1st. However, although (well mine at least) is silky smooth even at unadvisably high revs the 1275 always seems to me more comfortable reving very high. not to say the 1500 won't but... MORE

I'm cleaning out some stuff in garage and came across several 8-track tapes I bought several years ago (had thought I might put an 8-track player in my Bugeye, but probably won't). When driving I have always given priority to the driving. Some of my family used to get a little annoyed with me when travelling in the car with me because on occasions, my normally sparse conversatin would dry up completely, usually in mid sentence, until a particular set of circumstnces requiring full attention had passed. I have recently acquired a H.M.C.Co.Ltd hardtop(as in page 68 of the Terry Horler Bible)it needs a complete refurbishment,however this includes new rubbers to the side windows which seem to be one piece,together with the clips,front & rear. "Intercom helmets" Well, here in CT you have to wear a helmet. 'cause the cops don't know the speakers are in there? I mean, a helmet is a helmet and the wires are tiny and easily hidden? You know, I don't really know. I do know that in the case of a car, the cops will pull you over and ticket you for wearing a headset (both ears). Nelson... Frank used POR15 on his floors and they still rotted out beneath the coating. This resulted in an Italian burn....IOW, he was somewhat less than amused. Neither Diane, Tiffany or the cats could soothe him. His son, who was out destroying his VW at the time his Dad fell through the POR15 coated floor (at about 60 or so, traveling down the NJ turnpike) added fuel to he fire by failing to empathize while asking Frank for yet another coupla thousand bucks to rebuild his VW's blown engine, once again. An alternative to the Miata seats are Fiero seats. I have them in my 74 Midget. They have a pair of speakers in each headrest. Additionally, Mr. Mike's has leather skins for the seats with the MG logo embroidered in. And for a small added charge you can get them with pre-cut holes at the shoulders for a 4 or 5 point harness set-up. I just haven't ponied up the cash for the leather yet. Tad R. I read that when the MG Car Co started, the name 'MG' was taken from the first letters of Morris Garages, but does not actually stand for Morris Garages. Just like the Foden lorries. One of the brothers had a falling out with the family, started his own company, and called his lorries 'ERF' (Standing for, but not meaning, his name, E.R. Foden) Don't remember what names E & R stand for. Hope this clears up the query. The other car of my dreams (also prone to it's own mechanical idiosyncratic nightmares) woulbe the 69 X** 2+2. PURE 4 Wheeled "Feline" if you catch my drift. My Aunt Jean owned one of them for a few years. I thank my lucky stars that I atained driving age before she sold it to a collector in western NY.
