Jens I told you it was well worn! The other spindle wasn't nearly as bad, but decided to replace the pair of them while I was doing it. Clean the carbs? Nothing more than elbow grease! I washed them down thoroughly several times with turps (kerosense) using an inch paintbrush and changing the turp's when it got too dirty. I then scraped off the gasket material with a stanley blade and rotary wire brush cleaned the gasket surfaces only. The rotary wire brush is too harsh for the soft metal casting surface of the carb itself and leaves scratches... MORE
Jens I spoke to Burlen this morning as I mentioned and they were very helpful. I've ordered up two spindle kits, two rubber washers and two new AN needles from them. For interest and reference for others going down this route in the future the cost of drilling out the spindle holes in the carb body and putting in inserts for the new spindle is about =A320 GBP + VAT. The new spindle kit (comes with butterfly screws and gaskets) was =A36.87 GBP + VAT and the AN needle =A36.33 + VAT. The moral behind this is to avoid... MORE

Thanks again Colin. I will check regularly, but hopefully defer any spacer machining until winter. After torquing to 45 ftlb (was~22 - 24) play decreased to about 0.004". Nige et al I used the same method for removing the 'frozen' piston in the brake calipers. Method clamp the the piston in the caliper half where the banjo fits. Wrap the caliper in a rag with some plced where the disc would be. Cut the rubber hose and apply airline. First mistake using workshop pressure at 6 bar (80psi) the resulting BANG brought all the technicians out of the test cells to see what the h*ll was going on (or off as the case may be). I think you forget on each spring there are 2 spring pans one under the spr ing on the wishbone one above it welded to the crossmember, the one they al tered is welded to the cross member, but yes if you change it the ride heig ht will change!, altering the lower wishbone would also work. Thanks Bob, A thought just came to mind. My stock 73 rwa is a full inch and a half lowe r than my 74, now with the bugeye bonnet. I think perhaps a PO installed ne w springs at some point on the 74 as they look fairly new which makes me wo nder if he installed later model springs by mistake. Would you, are anyone else on the list, happen to know what the actual length measurements of th e uncompressed springs are for the early chrome bumper midgets and for the later rubber bumper model midgets are... The 'UG' part of the chassis number tells us it's a 1976 model year car, and the actual number 169542 indicates it would have been made in late '75. The engine number prefix FP says it's a Midget engine, not a Triumph Spitfire or 1500TC/Dolomite saloon engine. The suffix UE means North America (except California). I just purchased a 1975 or 76 midget.... not sure what year, person I purchased it from said it was 75 but old registration papers has the date of 1976. I am intersted in finding out all the information I can about it. It is in need of much TLC and parts, but it runs and I am very excited about fixing it up. A little less spectacular way to remove a piston is to fit a grease nipple into the brake line hole. Then fix a grease gun to it and pump on it until the piston is out. However, I do think the explosion method is entirely appropriate on most holidays when the local fire departments are on stand by alert anyway!! G'day Nigel et al As much as I agree with Bob (get a new one) I understand your penchant for originality and budget repairs. So here is an (almost) fail-safe method for freeing seized hydraulic components. (No, Nigel, I'm not being a smart-ass - we all have times where we just have to repair the used bit in front of us.) Take the part in question, let's say it's a clutch slave cylinder, remove all pipes and hoses, clean all the rust and debris out of the cylinder in front of the piston. You need to make it as... MORE
