Well I've gone and done it..the '60 is coming apart. Engine and trans are out in preparation of a complete refurb. At the very least this will include new inner and outer sills, maybe floors and possibly rear spring boxes. Paint will be redone and interior gone thru. I have a 1275 and ribcase waiting to be rebuilt and installed, along with Weber sidedraft etc. I am seeking suggestions on cams, porting and header. Cap'n You're not kidding! I had I known then, how much work this car was going to be, I'd never have =3D=0D done it. I'd have sold it, and gone out and bought one in the condition I wanted already done, and simply enjoyed it for what it is. A friend (non-computer type) has a problem with his odometer ... I mentioned the "collective brillance" of the list, and he asked for help. The odometer has stopped working on his bugeye. The speedometer is original equipment and works just fine, his odometer just stopped working suddenly. Since he uses the odometer to decide when to get gas (he trusts it more than his gas gauge), he really wants to repair it. Any ideas or suggestions? Wow!! El warmo!! Let's see...that would be about 100F (which is warm enough, mind you!). In summer, it gets warmer in our Southern states such as Texas, where our fellow lister Brad Fornal is located. The American Airlines training center is located in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas and I've been down their when it gets to 104-106 on a sunny day during their hot spells. But I suspect you are correct, Nigel, in your assumption...really, for this truly "hot". I don't know how Heathrow authorities measure their temperature but I assume it is "free air". As you all know, I live for yard sales and flea markets. I found some 1962 Life magazines today, I bought them for the car adverts inside. The seller also included a few other magazines. Some are from 1955, there are two Radio & Television News (Jan and Feb), and two RADIO-ELECTRONICS Television-Servicing-High Fidelity (Mar and Nov) There is even an article on servicing color television. My apologies for the terminology gaff. The rotten bits are the inner & outer sills (rocker panels), floor pans, footwell panels, etc. Basically anything behind the wheels has rusted away. The previous owner drove the car year round. Which here in Wisconsin means it was subjected to the brutal winters & corrosive road salt for a third of the year. Hello all, Thanks for all the replies on my previous post regarding backfires. Here's my next newbie question: The `77 Midget I picked up a few weeks ago seems sound mechanically. It always starts, runs well, and doesn't leak or burn anything (though I haven't tried taking it through emissions testing yet). I drive it 10 miles to work a few times a week to work the bugs out. Hi guys: I am still in the process of repairing my 1979 midget 1500.got my new carpet kit in and since I do not have any carpet in my car, could someone recommend a site for good, clear pictures of the interior of a later midget? First - will someone who has experience resolving off-idle stumble with a Weber DGV on a 1275 please post me off-list. General parameters: 1275, std bore, stock cam, head milled, Crane optical ignition, header. Use an aftermarket electric fuel pump with a pressure regulator set to 3.5 pounds. Engine has never idled this well in the 33 years I've owned it (even as low as 700rpm), idle set at 900rpm, performance above 2000 rpm is excellent. It just stumbles in the 1500 - 1700 rpm range when you hit the gas. Makes double- clutching a bit dicey. Have done... MORE
G'day Brad I am not aware of production oversize cam bearings. I guess you could go hunting other makes for something that would fit, but I doubt it would be productive. Find a machine shop with a lathe and a knurling tool, grip each of the bearings in turn in the lathe with the camshaft inside so that you don't crush the bearings, and lightly knurl the outside of the bearings. Then fit them with Locktite. Betcha they don't come loose. You might need to relieve the ID of the bearings once fitted, as the knurling will tend to... MORE

Hello all, new to the list, new to Midgets. Question: I've got a '77 that backfires between shifts under heavy acceleration. I know why; there's excess fuel being dumped into the exhaust between shifts and detonating; I just don't know the cause. The 2 possible causes I've come up with is the air pump is supplying air to the exhaust when it shouldn't (bad valve?) or the non stock exhaust the car has (just 1 tiny Walker muffler) is allowing the fuel laden exhaust to reach air before sufficiently cooled. with regards to understeer, this may be of interest, I swapped the front springs on my 1500 for 400lb 8 1/4" springs with poly bushes all round and a 3/4" ARB with nylatron bushes (i have a freeling the old ARB was 9/16ths) its a '75 UK car btw. Now, this tightend the front end up no end and felt great, however, ther rear still had the standards springs and was lowered 1" on blocks. Well, Nigel... Your searching for something here but it's not about the 1500 or a correct way to modify or sort the handling on a car. With respect to the 1500, It's mostly all add-on stuff to the original type so the mfgs. could extend the life of the type while meeting later day safety standards. As such, all "earlier" prior specs and parts are available so it's not as though one is dealing with a new type.
