Brad, You can see if your rocker shaft is okay or not by removing the valve cover after the engine is warmed up and restart the engine. If oil is thrown all over the place or runs out of one or more rocker arms in streams then it is worn. If oil isn't thrown all over the place and only a small amount can be seen dribbling down the rockers then it's probably okay. 5 leaves?.. would that no make them possibly 1500 springs? if so the 1500 was 1.5" higher than any other sprite, and as they are meant to have a lot of extra weight (bumpers and re-inforcement) probably higher still, and you have by replacing the rear panels with fiberglass brought about a noticeable reduction in weight.. Hi all Awhile back I posted a question about finding out some info on a sliding type vinyl sunroof that I had aquired. Some of you were albe to help me identify what it was that I had. Rob Check out your rear spring shackles. I bet they're pointing towards the front of the car - pos. up to 45 deg forward of vertical. You need to get them flipped so that they're pointing 20 - 30 degrees BACK from vertical ie towards the rear of the car. BTDT! - I used a stout broom handle to lever mine back - followed by three huge paving slabs in the boot / trunk for three months to settle the springs while the rebuild continued. Hi Cap'n and Jens, I guess I've got to be a lone noise in the wind here. I've always used Fram or Pennzoil filters for as long as I can remember. I've got a 1275 in my van that has almost 300,000 miles on it since a major rebuild. Did 105,000 mile on a quickie rebuild before that, on an engine that came out of a burned MG Midget wreck. Admittedly this engine is now pretty tired, but it still goes OK. I changed the oil and filter religiously at 5k miles, with nary a peep out of this... MORE
Rick I kept my old single bed and mattress for this job. With the tub fully stripped, it is light enough to man handle upside down. I laid out the bed frame and single mattress on the floor of the garage underneath the car and simply lifted the edge of the car and flipped it over onto the mattress and leant it against the wall. Duncan One of the jobs I hated most on the car (and there were plenty of them) was scraping all the underseal/bitumen off the inner footwells and fronts of the inner footwells. I'm not small (no comments needed on that one thanks Ed) at 6 foot and getting inside those footwells and scraping, scraping, scraping was very uncomfortable! Regarding carpet glue and fluff, I found Cellulose thinners worked really well. Apply it with a brush, leave for a few minutes and it just scrapes off, once you've got the majority off - go over it with an old rag... MORE

Nigel I had the same thing happen to my trip odometer. It broke off where the shaft was cross drilled just outside the main body of the odometer. If you have access to a metal working lathe it is a simple job to make a small shaft coupling and a new knob. I did it with mine and made the new knob a little larger so it is easier to grab. Rick The answers to these questions are as long as they are short! I can tell you what I did, but I'm not sure it will help you in your situation. I stripped all my interior paint back to bare metal using Nitromors paint stripper, washed it down with water, dried it, cleaned it all with a wire brush zip wheel in an angle grinder, sprayed it with etch primer, high build primer filler and finally top coat. I removed the carpet glue and (one of the worst jobs of the lot) the underseal/bitumen panels on the trans tunnel... MORE
Listers - Finishing getting the exterior of my Midget tub stripped and primed and about to move onto the interior and trunk areas. Whats the best way to go about it? The trunk is fairly dirty with light rust scattered around and there is a dirty sludge in the cracks and crevices, whats the best way to remove it and paint the interior? I doubt I'd be able to get all the rust and won't be able to strip everything to bare metal so I'll be leaving areas of the original paint. What should I paint the interior/floor with?... MORE
When I got home tonight I thought that I'd introduce my daughter to a ride in an MG, after all she's been waiting for 10+ years for her Midget. This was to be in the B-GT that I recently acquired. The valves were a little noisey so we'll just take a few minutes and adjust them then go for a ride,RIGHT. After removing the valve cover I discovered that the DPO (Dear used instead other words) had WELDED the adjustment screws with no nuts inplace for the #3 cylinder. HOW CAN PEOPLE DO THAT? Whats up Roger I found that the steering wheel isnt the main problem. Its my frickin long legs and my propensity for wearing work boots. After removing the steering wheel I found that it made it easier to get out but I still hit my boots on the front edge of the door opening on the way out. Im hoping that the modification that Im making to the bulkhead just behind the seets will help even more. Tede The stuff you wnat is 3M Weatherstrip adhesive. Over here it comes in a red and white squeeze tube and is yellow in color. I think the paint is a fairly common color of gray. Well, If this is the general consensus, then I have learnt something. Certainly at the time I rebuilt my system and made the switch, silicon was THE THING to use. And generally agreed as such by many on this list at the time. If the current view is to avoid using silicon then I will certainly think about reverting to DOT4. "Surely they should last....." Depends upon use over time. As we know, when they sit (especially "unprotected"), certain items not only continue to wear, they wear at an accelerated rate due to lack of lubrication along with "water within" (condensation, etc.). My car sat outside (but under a cover) a good part of last winter which in these parts, was uncharacteristically very cold. But the vehicle was started, thoroughly warmed and "moved" (shocks, brakes, etc.) at least once a week. Also, the exhaust outlet was kept covered while the car "sat". OK, time for some fun. Anyone here race their MG in solo II? Stories and suggestions would be appreciated. I've done AMA Motorcycle Road Racing, track days in my Beretta, and raced a friends 969 a couple of times when he was laid up injured.
