Any body know of a good source of second hand parts in Norter England. Due to a complete brain fade I have bent the drivers door back on its self with maximun damage to door and A post cover panel. I am NOT happy but only myself to blame forgot to put hand brake on when putting on trailer got out leaving door open and guess what rolled straight off catching door on steady post. Are you looking for just the electrical switch and wiring harness portion of the switch? I'm assuming your 'double-d' hole has rounded out on you or the wiring is mangled? I have a NOS elec switch with harness as spare here. I had one 'mechanically fail on me (plastic part messed up and metal pin wouldn't turn it) so when I found a new one I bought 2! As a further follow up on this posting, I took a few minutes to study the portion of the wiring harness that plugs into the switch. There has evidently been a dead short in the switch as the wires have melted together and I'm sure they are touching at some point. Again, I think the copper contact inside the plastic plug that goes into the switch assembly has shorted out and the switch problem is there. Neil "Neil Hernan" 24692... MORE
Hello to All I finally got some time to work on the MG switch. Following the ideas/instructions from previous posts, I got the electrical plug out of the ignition switch. The metal portion of the switch assembly that wraps around the steering column now seems to work OK. At least I can remove the key. I then took the electrical plug apart. There are a couple of copper contacts, springs and steel balls. My questions is this, is the spring built into the metal switch assembly or the plastic electrical plug that fits into the switch assembly? I did... MORE
RE: Horn Not necessarily. What year car is yours? Later cars had a small cylindrical platic switch about the diameter of a Bic pen with a brass spring loaded contact at each end. This fits in a small hole in the steering wheel. They are easily broken and it is missing you would not know what should be in there. Gerard "gerardchateau" 24685... MORE

Rob You could replace the body panels with older ones (expensive.) I'm thinking of fabricating the pieces out of Styro and fiberglass. I bet there is a market for these pieces Is someone could make a mold from an older Midget. Jay Shaffer 24682... MORE

Hey Don, I'm not sure my first reply made it to the list so I'm gonna do this again just in case. It doesn't feel like the turn signal arm is catching on what it's supposed to catch on to make the signal work. There's no resistance when I move the lever up or down. I haven't taken it apart yet to look because I'm just a little nervous taking the steering column apart. As for the horn, when I remove the cover in the middle of the steering wheel there's nothing there. No wires, no contacts no nothing.... MORE

No, No, No! The Spridget sare unibody constructtion and as long as no structural panels are removed, the car does not flex (as in the Big Healeys or MGA's). The curve in the frame is that way to set the wheel castor. The frame will not straighten out when the engine is back in, nor should anything be done do accomplish same. It probably makes no measureable difference. The structure of these cars is quite strong, and the engine/trans weight is not far from the front axle centerline, so I doubt there is any change in panels fit you would be able to see. The factory certinly didn't care, and with even slight effort, your car will be straighter than when it was new... "Jeffrey Holmes" 24604... MORE
A quick update on the progress of the Midget. I've got primer coats on the underside, a coat of stone chip and seam sealer on the seams. I decided to turn the car over and continue with the primer coats on the other panels rather than complete the underside with top coat, turn it over and put the wheels back on. It suddenly struck me while I was prepping the engine bay for paint, that with the engine in, the body alignment may be slightly different. Which brings up a question I have. Is there anything to stop a person from installing an earlier model dash 59 - 63 in a 73 Midget? Realizing the washer switch, turn signal switch and ignition switch would have to come off the steering column. Don "Don May" 24620... MORE
Don, My 75 Midget was originally Brooklands Green and had narrow gold double pinstripes along the body sides just below the level of the door handles. I am certain they were there from new especially as they are very tough to remove. Rob C robbiesg@... 24546... MORE
Rob, that is were the double pinstripes on my 73 are located, just below the door handle between the handle and lock. White double ones that have sort of a half arrow shape at the front. I have an original British Leyland sales brochure for the 74 midget however it does not list pin strips as an option. Don "Don May" 24551... MORE
Welcome, Sam... Suggest you follow DLancer's advice and be prepared to do both rear brakes as well (unless the other side is basically new) as that oil usually renders that particular side useless in this respect.... Afraid I do not have the parts you seek, though I do already have a copy of Blaggot's fine book, thank you! As far as additives go, don't exactly know what motivates you in this, Sam. Usually, a quality brand is all that is required along with oil/filter changes every 3K or so. It is the additive package which is usually the difference... MORE
Hello, i'm new to the group and I am looking for just a few bits,..mostly a period radio, a stock muffler, and (I realize its a stretch and yes, I know I can get one on e-bay or through the standard mail order companies, but it never hurts to ask) a black carpet kit for my 1962 midget. I also have a spare copy of John Blaggots book "Mighty Midgets and special sprites"...its very nice book and its in perfect condition. aaand while I have your attention, I have oil running out my back left hand side rear wheel... The story.for those who tuned in late..... 1275 rebuilt to 1400cc,9.75 : 1 Cr 643 cam, weber 45DCOE. Engine sat for 16 years after rebuild,started for the first time last july, 2000 miles since. Burns and leaks oil. Compression test results: Cold no plugs 195,205,200,205 Cold 3 plugs 205,203,195,192 Cold 3plugs oil 230,225,225,215 Hot compression test -no plugs 205,210,210,210 Hot 3 plugs 175,185,190,185 Hot 3 plugs oil 225,210,210,200 It was suggested that I switch to a vented oil filler cap to reduce smoking and it appears to have cut it down but did not stop it. I trust all the purists out there have their nitro glycerin pill handy. A group member observed upon seeing my bugeye bonnet photo that I have a lot of new metal to replace with new and weld in place of the rusted metal on the edges of the bonnet . . . I am thrilled that my MIG welding skills have progressed to a point that I tack welded the side panels back on after having removed them to work the fenders back to a fair semblance of their original state . . . weld sheet metal . ....
