Valve stem diameters are the same for 1098 and 1275 (and 948) engines. So are the rear plate gaskets. If by front gasket, you mean timing chain cover gasket, that's the same too. As to the moving liner, the only way to salvage that block would be to find (or have made) a liner with a sufficiently larger OD than the one in it now. Well, Nigel... Your searching for something here but it's not about the 1500 or a correct way to modify or sort the handling on a car. With respect to the 1500, It's mostly all add-on stuff to the original type so the mfgs. could extend the life of the type while meeting later day safety standards. As such, all "earlier" prior specs and parts are available so it's not as though one is dealing with a new type. Well, Rob... Vicky B. offers a rear spring lowering kit at a very reasonable price so you wouldn't be out much if this approach didn't work. I bought my car as a rolling chassis, and live in a restricted area with only a car port (You cannot work on cars in the neighborhood, and if you do you can only work on them two hours). I bought the Duravent cover from Moss. It keeps the cats prints off. They seem to like walking on a warm hood, and with the cover being gray, I don't see any cat prints on the cover. David... The swipe of a cat's paw is sufficient to open up your tonneau cover? Really? Dave, with all due respect my friend, get yourself an "el cheapo" Tyvek lightweight cover and your problem is solved...really, end of story. Keeps sap and bird droppings off the paint as well and can be hosed off in a heartbeat. Saves the top, tonneau, plastic windows from the sun, etc. Thing can be rolled up into a small ball and thrown in the trunk easy. Carry mine around all the time. Ya' know.... Cats are not dogs, guys. There are no leash laws or "scooper" laws for cats, either. There ARE laws against taking or harming pets and dumb domesticated animals however, along with general laws on animal cruelty. It was not that long ago that I filed charges against a neighbor of mine for mistreating another neighbor's pet...guy didn't think anyone was lookin' I guess... wrongomundo and it cost him a couple of hundred bucks...too baaaaad. Being the owner of a somewhat converted rubber bumper 76 midget,I would like to say that my reasons for the change were simple.# 1 i got a nice car at a great price.#2 After much consideration and head scratching,I decided i could go without any bumpers.Having grown up in the 60S I never got over the hotrod/sportscar thing.Back then a midget/sprite looked pretty tough with no bumpers,A roll bar,wide stripes on bonnet and boot.They even had mag wheels[not minilight style]on some.Any way much as i prefer an older model chrome bumper model this is what i have to work... Well, Bill... As long as no cats have been injured, I remain on your side! :) Velcro closed "flaps" are the way to go around he roll bar. This is what I have and they work just fine in forming tight fit and keeping the water out. I have low backs (and always have) so I am of no use in the hi-back seat dept. Don There were quite a few modifications made to the Rubber Bumper (RB) Midget over and above the obvious ones, which im sure everyone will point out to you. I'm sure you're aware of the history behind these modifcations, but to recap the RB Midget came about to meet the ever more stringent emission and control regulations imposed in the relatively large North American Market. Don, I currently own a 1500 and have done for about 8 years but only driven 1275's (in various states of tune) so I don't know how objective my observations are but here goes... For standard vs standard the 1500 certainly has more torque and IMO is perhaps easier to drive around town in traffic althought at pretty subective i guess. It also has syncro on 1st. However, although (well mine at least) is silky smooth even at unadvisably high revs the 1275 always seems to me more comfortable reving very high. not to say the 1500 won't but... MORE
Don, My '75 has the bumpers removed and I discovered the following: Rear end:Area below the tail lights is flat and obviously not meant to be visible. Front: There are two large rectangular cutouts in the wings roughly in the position of the 1275 turn signals that are there to clear a large steel support for the bumper corners. Obiously there is no chrome surround or grille worth mentioning. In addition the bumper support frame extensions must be dealt with as they stick out pas the grille opening. Folks.... Part of what is pushing me to complete these projects is this group (besides the personal reasons). Hearing of all of you driving your cars and dealing with the little problems. Hell, any MG owner knows of the minor issues that goes on with them. I have yet to consider the interior and exterior. As my neighbor friend (a mechanic) says - "get it running perfectly, then worry about the interior and body". Do any of the members gather or put together meetings/rallys for others here? Brad, Good luck on your first road test. I just got my 75 Midget running semi-properly this summer after 4 years of effort. If it's any comfort my list of needed parts is now two spreadsheet pages; engine, tranny, radiator, compete brake and clutch rebuild, tube shock conversion, new interior etc. etc. etc. I have also discovered I need to pull the engine.... again. I used the original clutch as it looked fairly recent but failed to consider the effect of time on the springs. Car runs fine but slips in higher gears when I put my foot down... MORE
There should be a little square box between the top and bottom hinges for the switch; it has two holes facing outwards (one for the switch body, one for the self tapping screw that holds it in place) The wiring passes through the box and then through the footwell side. If it's not there, it's possible that the A post has been replaced with the wrong one (not sure if you can actually get later ones with the box built in?) as these are notorious rust areas. I was wondering if any one with a similar model had any photos of where the courtesy light switches are mounted on the door posts and also any info about the boot lamp and switch. I need to get a tire tube replaced and check the differential fluid before I drop it onto the ground and try for a short drive. The new parts I needed to order were... I have a wonderful audio system at home and a recliner chair to sit in while I listen to it. Personally I do not like to talk while driving any more than I would in a movie. Goodness folks! Rio, I used a couple of different types of spray contact adhesive. 3M worked the best. Several less expensive brands just didn't do the job as well. The 3M stuff is about $10.00 for a large spray can. It was especially good at keeping the carpet down on the rear wheel humps and behind the seat area. In fact I glued down all the carpet upto and over the support member in front of the seats. The foot wells had snaps and I used the OEM and bought snaps for the carpet from a craft store for the kit... MORE
