Well for what it's worth 32 years ago I flipped a 62 sprite by running off the road skidding sideways. Front wheels were in the ditch rear wheels were up in a yard ended up hitting a rock on the passenger side rocker panel which in turn put as airborne and we ended up in the middle of the road upside down. No roll bar I was sore without a scratch my friend ended up with seven stitches to the back of his head from the support bar for the top. I personally think in this case a roll... MORE

Stewart....you gotta be kiddin' me! :) drive "properly"??? What has this got to do with getting sideswiped by an 18 wheeler who decides to occupy the space you are already occupying while cruising along at 65mph on a limited access highway??? Or "T" boned at an intersection wherein the other guy ignored a stop sign? And God knows how many other circumstances w herein you get "zapped" while doing everything.................... "properl y". The foregoing having been said....I agree roll bars impact the "lines" of t he car in a negative manner. And of course, you have to modify the... MORE

Hello Colin, Getting upper and closer personal, I am 62 (and dipping in the Social security till), have also owned Spridgets since age 19 (bought a new '60 Bugeye), same wife for 40 (OhMyGod) years, but one child only, now age 40, but who is a lawyer, and who left home a long time ago, having produced three chirrens of her own. You're right about Spridgets - some (many, actually) years ago, I bought a very nice, straight and rust free '67 Midget, 43,ooo miles, for $465. It needed new carpets, but that's all. We're always glad to hear... MORE

1965 Austin-Healey Sprite MK3 The car was restored and put on the road in August of 04, it is rust free and solid. I have made many upgrades and changes. Some of the bigger changes are a Datsun 210 5spd transmission, an 1100cc engine. It has a new shiny black paint job with a new sexy red interior. Includes a few spare parts. It has very few miles on it. This is a fun little car. The top could use a little help and so could the Master cylinder. The car is located in Palm Bay, Florida. Please call... MORE

I got the Bugeye back from the the paint & body shop on Monday afternoon (yes they were open on Memorial Day). It had been delayed several days cuz the new manager had fired the painter and hired a new one. They did an excellent job on the body work and paint job, so I feel a little better about the cost. Great paint job - just the wrong color! Definitely not the color & code (brilliant silver metallic, 744) given to them. I actually like the new color - kinda a gunmetal (certain listers should like that) grey... MORE

Jeremy, Just had a go-round with my carbs which are earlier with no vent tubes. If my experience is any example the carbs will "Y" off the valve cover and provide negative pressure in the valve train. This is a good thing. If my understanding of the setup is correct you need to hook this up or you will leak oil from strange places. In my case out of the dipstick tube among others. Jeremy... these "tubes" feed graduated (specifically sized) orifices through which crankase gasses are fed into the combustion process in a measured amount, off the "flame arrestor/oil vapor separator (through appropriate hoses and plastic "T" fit ting) mounted on the timing chain cover. These make up the "exit" or "exhaust" side of the PCV system on engines so equipped, the "inlet" side of the equation being a filtered plastic oil filler cap on the "early" cars or a feed tube into the valve cover (again, through a "graduated orifice) from the charcoal cannister on later emissions vehicles equipped with closed... I use a 1/4" drive, (Breaker Bar), 6" extension, and a 7/16" "crowfoot" with tubing style "C" shape. It is cheap, and puts you above the master cylinder to loosen the fittings. Most places that handle sockets & ratchets should know about them and have them. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 37323... MORE

Looking for some if anyone has them! The bits I am looing for are the small plastic square things that sit over the screw on the interior door handles on midgets and sprites with the palstic trim colour handles. Seems I can buy them in any colour I like as long as it's black. and I don't want black. SO if anyone is converting to a blackinterior from tan, or has some on a parts car I would be interetsted. Seems anything other than balck is now a rare interior! Stewart "Ford Prefect" 37287... MORE

Anyone have a clue where you can get the chrome bezel for a MG Hazard swtich in the radio console? I have a NOS switch, but a beat up bezel... Couldn't locate it in Moss or Victoria British by itself. Thanks "Mike" 37286... MORE

You're probably right, Joe.... ..wouldn't surprise me, really. Assuming it is as represented, one of the cleanest/nicest examples I've ever seen. The interior is gorgeous. Truly, a VERY nice car. :) Cap'n Bob Basic Frog "Robert E. Shlafer" 37278... MORE

Some of the kits that convert the standard carbon bearing to a roller/ball thrust bearing also need to have the triangular plate removed from the cover, so the bearing presses directly against the spring fingers. Is the old one like this? David "David Jacobs" 37237... MORE

HI All, I have a question about the competition 1/2 ellipticals for my MKIII Midget. I installed them and the car now sits approx 2.5 inches taller. Anybody have any ideas? Is it the new springs? Will they settle over 4"? Let me know if anybody elese has had any luck with these. Also I am getting ready to list my house and I was wondering what a hardtop for a spridget should list for. I think I am going to sell that ans a pair of brand new HS2's (still in box)and a few other spridget parts laying... MORE

The easiest way is to take a kitchen meat thermometer, and take off the radiator cap, start car and when the temp gage needle starts to go up, put meat (or candy)(or whatever) thermometer in top of radiator and watch the temp on both. They should be close to the same. You can take a sheet of newspaper and cover the radiator to block the air from the fan to allow it to start to get close to 212 degrees as the upper end of the test. I think this is easier than removing the gage and sender and... MORE

The Midget & Sprite club (MASC) Cambridgeshire and London groups are staging a get together of all Sprites and Midgets on the 22nd May at the Stondon transport museum which is about 30 miles north of London (a couple of miles west of the A1). We plan to meet at the museum at 10 am (look for the MASC tent, banner and lots of Sprites and Midgets) and anyone with a Sprite or Midget is welcome to join us. Stondon transport museum is an interesting place in it's own right (take a look at their web site, also useful... MORE

OK, Rob C. Belay the first paragraph of my previous post then. Now that I know the circumstances, I totally agree with your mech. in that you need to "vent" the crankcase, either to the airfilters (if possible) or to atmospher via a "breather" similiar to the one you can find at www.speedwellengineering.com under "performance, misc.". These breather cans are also available for more reasonable prices from Jeg's and/or Summit . Open up whatever vents you have on the valve cover and skip the charcoal cannister competely with respect to the motor. Now, because the fuel system is closed... MORE

Cap'n The car cam with a ZS150. I transplanted a Spitfire 1300 carb/manifod setup. The original set up had a valve cover tube and a carb tube that connected to a charcoal canister along with the fuel vent tubing. The pro I had work on the car is good. His opinion is that I need negative pressure off the valve cover which between a 30 year old cannister and some suspect tubing connections I am not getting. Most of the original emmissions equipment was gone when I got the car. The motor is a fresh rebuild. Rob C Webfoot... MORE

Robbie.... I don't think the two are related. I think your motor has a case of "blow b y" of combustion gasses past the rings into the crankcase. I am not sure what emissions equipment you still have on your motor and do not "know" much about 1500's at all but, the feed from the charcoal cannister to the valve cover is intake air into the crankcase through a "graduated orifice" which normally works together with the "exhau st" side of this equation which feeds a graduated amount of crankcase gasses to the combustion chamber through a PCV valve... Folks, Am finally, after 6 years, getting to enjoy my LBC ('75 1500) but I still have some issues. Suggestions have been made and I was hoping group members might comment. After having my twin carb setup tweaked by a "pro" I started leaking oil out of the dipstick. Sealing the joint helped but has not cured the problem which seems to occur at sustained higher speeds and RPM's. It has been suggested that instead of running the valve cover breather tube to the charcoal cannister that I run it into the back of the air cleaner for better... MORE

Don't forget to check the cylinder head face is flat. Check the valve seats for pitting/burning. If they're not too bad, lightly grind the valves in, if it's really bad, consider getting the head converted to unleaded (something to think about anyway) Regarding the choke cable, if you're not messing about with the carbs, other than taking them off the head, leave them on the manifold with the cables connected. Other than that, get some small spanners! If you can't find any to buy, get a cheapo one and modify it to fit. Heat it up and hammer it... MORE

First the stupid question, is it one of those locks that you need to push in a button (or the whole key) to turn it to the lock position? If you do need to take it apart, the actual switch part can be removed from the lock itself, so you can isolate which bit is jamming, but if it is the lock, they don't come apart easily (for obvious reasons) Easiest thing is to replace it, together with the steering column it's attached to, with a brand new second hand one, if you can find one. If you definitely... MORE

Hi: I have been lurking for a few days, just purchased a 1979 Midger and am sure will have several questions. The first problem is that the keyis very hard to turn from the unlocked to the locked postion. Have any of you had any luck removing the lock switch and repairing and reinstalling it. The manual speaks of shear bolts that would need to be replaced. TIA Vern Vern 36886... MORE
