Kevin... You engine looks nothing like the engine in the Haynes manual? Hmmm.... Well...a picture is worth a thousand words, Kev. Those hoses to the carburators from the cannister on the timing chain cover should definitely be clear and open.... no doubt about this. If the valve cover was on the engine when you were running it, then with every respect, Kevin, there is no way you could tell where the oil was coming from... the oil filler hole is too small to provide a decent view and through this small hole, not enough light in there...to dark in... Just checked my Haynes which is what I'd have followed during my rebuild. No specific order to retightening but what it does day is do the bolts up finger tight then rotate the crankshaft a few revolutions before torqueing down. The other thing to check is that you don't have any grit under the shells. However as all is fine with the old TWs then it sounds like the only problem is the new TWs are a bit thick. When I rebuilt my 1275 I didn't replace the TWs, how do the old ones look? Running the car like... MORE
When I rebuilt my 1275 I didn't replace the TWs, how do the old ones look? Running the car like that may overheat those new TWs and they might finish up in a worse state than your known good ones. Jim, Sounds way too tight, but this isn't a "seat of the pants' thing. You need a dial gauge and a magnet stand to check end float. You need to exert force in both directions and see what the dial gauge reads. From memory, I think .003 is the upper limit, but check the specs first. It 's possible for... MORE

Hi, Bill.... Jegs, Summit or Racer Wholesale offer some nice 4 point systems with 3" webbing that really holds you in. These are usually top brands like Simpson. They sell the mounting kits as well. The Spridget is small inside so get "pull up" types rather than "pull downs" when it comes to the seat belts (it they still offer a choice in this respect) whether you order/use the shoulder belts or not. As you already know....VB, Moss or any of the other usual suspects for the stock OEM type stuff. "Performance shops" also carry generic types that will... MORE
Check to see if the hose from the top of the oil separator canister on front of the timing chain cover to the carburetors is clogged up and if the two small inlet pipes where the hoses connect at the carburetors are not clogged up. Spray a little carburetor cleaner in them. Don "Don May" 25419... MORE
Kevin. When the oil starts to puke out of the valve cover oil filler cap, quickly take off the cap and check for two things. First see it the valve cover is actually full or almost full of oil and bubbles are causing the oil popping out or check for too much positive crank case pressure by putting your hand over the open oil filler hole and sealing it up for about 30 seconds and lifting your palm. Do you get a gigantic "WHOOSH" of pressure or just a little "fiffft" of pressure. Then report back to the LBC... MORE
I did the same thing with the seat backs in my bugeye. The "horns" were eaten back and rough and the lip across the inside was the same way. I couldn't find any replacements localy and the upholsterer was waiting for the seat backs so he could finish the seats and the car show was a week away. A seam came loose in the seat back a couple of months later so I took them back to the upholsterer. He took the material off and repaired the seam. When I picked them up, he told me that he would... Don No doubt in my mind, you should have cut out the rotten metal and replaced it with new. Wheres the cost? You've got the welder - how much are a couple of sheets of sheet steel? No more than the fibreglass. The metal repairs don't have to be aesthetically pleasing - just solid, you can sort the cosmetics out with filler. I did all the metalwork on my car, with no specialist tools at all apart from perhaps a cheap panel beating set, that cost about 20 bucks and a pair of tin snips. The key I found... MORE
I only have the standard drivers rear view mirror (dashboard mounted) and I'm looking for a suitable looking side mirror that would fix in some way to the end of the windscreen so that I can avoid a hole fixing to a front panel. I can't see anything in the Moss Catelogue of this nature that would suit - anyone got any suggestions? What have others done? Tim "timandshelagh" 25369... MORE
Hi, Tim.... I was in the same predicament when I picked up my BE. Like you, I hate drilling through the car's panels and creating holes where there were none. On my PO'd '74 Spridget the holes were already there and a blacked out Baby Turbo went beautifully with my two-tone semi-gloss black and metallic medium blue Maaco paint scheme! But like your car, the BE had no side mirror to begin with. So what I did was have fabricated a mounting plate for a spun aluminum Raydot, encompassing two holes drilled in the plate which utilized the already... MORE
Those who have checked out my bugeye bonnet restoration photos may have noticed that I chose to form the missing sections of end flange and sheet metal with fiberglass. I realize that many have advised me to cut back and replace with new formed metal pieces . . . that is not within my expertise nor budget, lots of time I have. I might as well buy a new fiberglass bonnet for the cost involved for new metal work and welding so I sought the advice of some folks at TAP Plastics and went with fiberglass. My logic with... MORE
Don I'ts more than likely an idiosyncrasy of the way the bonnet is fabricated/constructed, being made out of separate side wings (fenders) and top panel, the beading was there I guess to help hide the seam joint. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 25351... MORE
Why do you suppose that beading was used to cover the bonnet seams of the fender/ wings however between the signal lamps and the grill opening the seam was left not only left exposed but not smoothed over? Just one of those little things I ponder. Don now full time bonnet sander "Don May" 25349... MORE

"...it seems to be loose" Not uncommon, Kelly... Don't weld it, clamp it whatever you do, if such repair is appropriate. There is that bracket which goes laterally between the transmission and the pipe just forward of your seat. Not there? Have Meinecke or any decent muffler shop install "their version". Or, make one up...either way the system will need some "support".....there. Hope you are enjoying the car (at last!:). Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 25280... MORE
The brake failure light is on the right hand side of the radio console above the cigarette lighter. (I think it should come on with the handbrake as well.) A single dash light bulb shouldn't cause total failure, as they are wired in parallel, so it's just a case of methodically checking the wiring/connections/switch etc. I think they're fed from an unfused supply. David "David Jacobs" 25268... MORE
Hi David You were right on ths wiring colours I didnt notice that differnce. The dash lights area Red wire with white trace Whereas the diode is White Wire with red trace out on the male connector and Green with orange trace on the female connector. So now I have two more questions regarding this 1) If it is the brake failure warning light where abouts on the dash would this be displayed as there is no obvious point I can see. I havnt noted this so it may be functioning well after all. 2) What could be causing... MORE
I think it's a diode rather than a fuse, but the only one I can find in diagrams is associated with the brake failure warning light circuit rather than the panel lamps. However it's possible the colour code has been mixed up - some of the wiring to the brake warning circuit diode is white with a red tracer, the panel lamps supply is the reverse, ie red with a white tracer. What colour wires have you got connected to each side of this unit? Regards David "David Jacobs" 25258... MORE
Hi Neil I had the same problem with mine but got them working in the end although I am not sure whether the same circumstances may apply. I say this as it was my brake light and indicators that were not working, everything else worked fine. It mentioned in the Haynes Manual that these two are related and when I fixed the one both sprung back to life. What it was down to was a loose and corroded connection between the brake pedal switch at the master cylinder and the wiring loom. I choped these off and repalced the... MORE
Hello there I am trying to get some information on the dash instrument back lighting circuit on my UK 1978 Midget 1500. This has never worked on the car but after overhauling the wiring system as part of a stripdown I have and taking the oportunity to look at this issue I believe I have traced the problem to a mysterious black cylindrical unit I cannot find any refernce to, possibly a fuse The offending item is a black plastic tube approximately 14mm in diameter and 34mm long. It has a female spade connector at one end (sunken indide... MORE

Well, Rob... Big deal to you and me, maybe, but after looking over Trevor Boicey's article on Gerard's website, it looks like it can be done with no damage to the car and done easily at that by someone who knows what he's doing, inclusive of welding. I don't weld either, but my mech could handle this very easily and so equipped...minor work to him! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 25236... MORE
