Now the paint is finally going on my 1500 I have been sorting though the bits. On inspecting the front suspension what a surprise, it's all shot. play nearly everywhere it should not be. Do any of the owners clubs in the UK still keep the reamer needed to fit the bush and lend it out? (IIRC Dad borrowed one from the local MGOC back in the '70s). Onto another oddity, My car had the horn in the steering wheel, and the indicator stalk was damaged (a sizable piece of the end of it was missing) and it has... MORE

Mike, Let me start by saying if there are no leaks and the fluid level in the MC dosen't drop, I would suspect your MC. That said, does your brake warning light come on when you turn the ignition on? If it dosen't then the switch is centered. When either the right or left brakes fail the internal shuttle is push to one side or the other to seal off the side which has lost pressure and when it does it activates the switch and the dash light comes on. If your light is on after bleeding the brakes... MORE
Jens, After a complete re-build of my car, including new radiator and cap, I too was loosing water out of the overflow pipe for no apparent reason. The clue lies in the new cap. Although this was rated at the correct pressure (7 psi for early cars, 15 psi for later ones) it turned out to be a modern one with a neck that was too short, so was never seating properly! The easy way to check if yours is seating is to look at the bottom of the rubber seal to see if it has a circular indentation,... MORE
Yep.... You got it big guy!!!! Of course, this assumes a reasonably healthy engine pulling decent vacuum. TWO CAVEATS.... 1) If the engine's clapped out and is pullin' lousy vacuum, the pistons will never "top out", spring tension and fully open butterflies notwithstanding and thus....it follows, that.... 2) the entire induction system has got to be "air tight" as well. You don't need a midget under the hood. You need an SU carb tool kit!!! It comes with a little jet centering tool along with "rods" you place within the piston tubes which temporarily take the place of the... MORE
Air in the line will only give you a soft or spongy petal, not a loss of brakes. Loss of brakes would be caused by a leak, either a wheel cylinder or a brake switch, which would have fluid all over, or a master cylinder, which can have fluid all over or it might leak back into the reservoir, which you wouldn't see any fluid. You say that you rebuilt the master, but don't mention the wheel cylinders. Brake fluid eats rubber parts. I would suggest rebuilding, or at least inspecting the wheel cylinders. Check for leaks, and check... MORE
Hi all Looking for some advise. Have a '79 Stock Midget with dual line brake system. Have done work to it in the past year including: Rebuilt master, new rubber hoses all around, good linings, adjusted with nice firm pedal, NO leaks. Brakes seem fine then suddenly pedal goes to the floor with no brakes at all. This happened a few months back so I rebled the system and we have started to drive the car on a more regular basis now. Drove car about 100 mi before it happened. Pedal comes back up to normal with 1 or... MORE
I just want everyone to remember I didn't start this. You can blame Paul and David. Soldier's Letter to Kerry Dear Senator Kerry: Since it has become clear that you will probably be the Democratic nominee for President, I have spent a great deal of time researching your war record and your record as a professional politician. The reason is simple, you aspire to be the Commander in Chief who would lead my sons and their fellow soldiers in time of war. I simply wanted to know if you possess the necessary qualifications to be trusted in that respect.... MORE
1. The shortly later models used a 3/4" dual master cylinder with disk brakes. Looks just like the Bugeye 7/8" but takes less pressure. 2. There is a mastercylinder cap? on ebay for the dual mastercylinder that is raised an holds more fluid than the flat cover??? 3. I'm not sure that they will let you race with a later mastercylinder/clutch cylinder system? I don't know, I'm "simi- stock". Bob, Troutdale, OR Capt'n Bob, Quite. "Robert Webb" 32710... MORE

The Purpose of Tools HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate expensive parts not far from the object we are trying to hit. Willliam, FWIW-I bought an 1975 for $500 and have replaced virtually every mechanical component. I found and freshly rebuilt engine through the MG Club of Chicagoland classifieds for $632 (engine and freight). It need a backplate and dizzy which I pirated from the original. The special designation to the best of my knowledge had little to do with performance and a lot to do with creature comfort ...radio, carpet appearance package etc. My estimation is that the $600 is OK but you'll need to do more than you think. It will take longer and cost more. Rob C 1975... MORE
I know Frontline do some alloy panels, but I think it's just bonnet, boot and doors, not wings. You might need to get some specially made, if you really must have them. Talk to the rich racing guys! Not sure where is best for steel wings, but the BMH site shows the suggested price is 240. http://www.bmh-ltd.co.uk/bmhspa.html is a list of the BMH specialists. Regards David "David Jacobs" 32655... I do this too, however I use the appropriate sized "Socket Punch". They are common tools that can be found in any mechanics tool box. I have always did this to ensure that they always seat. Also, prior to reassembly, I always make sure that all of those little grooves that the spring clips seat in ar e REALLY clean. A scribe does wonders here. Another thing, never reuse the ol d spring clips. These are subject to wear always. Matt 76 Midget (in the process of being sold to a person in Brazil) "Matthew Pfeil" 32650... MORE
Hello all - Thanks for everybody's advice on my key `problem'. Looks like I'll be getting my set of files out and having a go with the tumblers. I'll let you all know how I get on. By the way, anybody experienced this? I wound down the window a couple of days ago, but the glass stayed at the top as it had separated from the lower channel. Not an expensive problem to resolve, just time consuming as I had to pretty much take the whole door apart to get the glass back in position after replacing the rubber... MORE
Hi All, I just wanted to rant about the shoddy condition of the Midget that i am restoring at the moment. This is my first Midget i have ever owned and have always wanted to have an MG. So I purchased one about two months ago which was mechanically sound ( apart from the clutch) but is a bit shoddy bodywork wise. I ordered the replacement sills (inner & Outer) and started work today removing bits for the job. So where does the frustration come in to it you ask. A weekend spent taking a car apart is 'fun'... Jim and Cap'n Rob, Sorry for the bit of delay in response. The dimensions of the new cover are precisely the same as the old, only difference being the air breather tube is straight rather than angled. Not a big deal. As Jim mentions, the chrome fasteners that come with the cover are tubes, but wider than the standard screw in tube type as listed in VB, pg 66 (items 6-9). You can see this entire package by looking at item #2481129573 on eBay, which is currently on auction. I have an extra 1500 on an engine stand in... MORE
I am hoping someone can help me with a problem I have obtaining a key set for my 1971 Midget. I purchased a lock set consisting of the two doors and boot lock, all with matching FS keys. I am now trying to purchase either just the lock barrel or the complete ignition switch (located in the middle of the dashboard) with the same FS key number as the doors. I have spoken to most of the suppliers such as Moss, Brown & Gammons etc. but none will sell me the ignition barrel with a specific key number. I... MORE
I thought 1.5-2 psi was optimal for the SUs and anything more would be a problem (of course every car has its own quirks). I have my regulator set around 2 psi (WAG). However by my seat of the pants I have a funny feeling that during high speed extended runs it "feels" like it stumbles just a bit. I haven't tried bumping up the pressure just yet. I am thinking fuel starvation due to slightly to pressure being a bit low. When I first installed and set the regulator it was way too low and the rear carb... MORE
Cap'n Bob Good news! I installed a new OP switch, filter and new oil. Took the car out on a good 45 min run and no warning light. What a relief. So far, so good. Was happy to hear Jens made out well too with his pressure issues. Thanks for the encouragement. Mike mk2sprite@... 32605... MORE
Hi, Peter... I am no 1500 guy but I've been following the thread on the discussion of longer studs needed for certain valve covers produced for the 1500 Spit motor. I just came across something in my TriumphTune performance manual which apparently deals with this. TriumphTune (TT) Part #105123 "On late 1500 models after '78, longer studs will be required wherein tube nuts are fitted as standard" This pertains to valve covers, all using the standard gasket. Sounds like what you may be looking for? Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 32602... MORE
Hi folks... it's been a while. I'm still doing too much traveling but I'm trying to work in some time on my 62MK2 between flights, and now I have some questions on front end springs. Anyone know what the original front spring rating (in pounds) for the MK1 or 2 Spridgets and has anyone ever measured the front end weight? I know that the RB Midget front springs are taller, but what is their ratting in pounds? Anyone ever use and have comments about the racing springs that Moss offers, 350 & 400 pound? I have a set of... MORE
I'll buy that, Bob (Troutdale, OR). Point is..."it's" (effectively) coming from behind you....and a windblocker will take some of that off of you and keep most of the rain off the inside of the windshield as well (at least mine does!) unless it's really pouring out there, in which case both you and the interior will drown, windblocker or not. Happy motoring! :):) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 32585... MORE
