Sure, Nigel.... ...the cars as the judges "felt they should have been" rather than as the imperfect contrivances they really were. Every now and then, one will catch old films of the Frogeyes coming off the boat as they arrived in the US and the fit of the body panels is hilarious, especially of course, the bonnets! I enjoy the concours events immensely with respect to the cars and talking to their owners, most especially those who do most, if not all of their own work. The people are as interesting as the cars and I appreciate to at... MORE

My Black Tulip 73 has a Tonneau cover that is in near mint condition . . . except . . . because it seems to have been seldom, if ever used has shrunk. Unlike some other Tonneau covers I have had the backing material on this one is very heavy duty canvas which is giving me trouble. Very good quality and construction. I have been successful in stretching the lighter canvas backed ones back to fit but this one even taking advantage of the hot weather we are having has resisted being stretched far enough, close but not there.... Stewart I really don't see what the problem is here and what it is that you don't understand. Unfortunately I do not have the book you refer to, I do however have parts manuals for all series of Spridgets and I can tell you with utmost certainty that the floor pan for a 1/4 elliptic Mk1 sprite is NOT The same as the floor pan for the semi elliptic later cars. OK but you must have the moss parts catalouge then where it states that the later floorpan can be used on early cars with little modification.. well I... MORE

Whooooooooooo This is going to be an interesting thread. As far as BMIHT Trace certificates are concerned heres the details from mine, I've blanked out the numbers with X's for security reasons. OK assuming you also have the super profile by Lindsay Porter take a look on Page 41, this shows the interior of the area in question quiet well! Now the floor panel pressing never changed from 1958 - 1979, the captive nuts that hold quarter or semi elliptic spring hangers to the floor are in the same place. This means that the bolts that hold one to the floor can be used to hold Mk1 spring hangers in the correct place on a later shell. Ok the part that runs up the vertical face that holds the upper link... MORE

OK, the area around the spring boxes on the MK1 while physically solid has had patches of steel welded over other patches over the years, and the whole area including the rear inner arch and the reinforcement running round the boot floor like a chassis rail is quiet simply a mess, the whole lot needs cutting out and replacing. Now many years ago my dad and myself cut up a frogeye, and I have had to repair this area on my 1500 shell, and I can tell you one thing for certain, the 1500 shell has within the triangulated... Stanley....you want everyone on the list t think you are a "girlyman"? Stop whining.....life is not perfect...."be a man, be a man"!! :):) We do the best we can with what we've got. "Never stop flying the airplane"! While there are few guarantees in life except for death, taxes, night follows day, day follows night and freedom ain't free... (never was, never will be), try to maintain a positive attitude. The Tyvek cover is one of life's little blessings that helps make things better... not perfect! :) Cap'n. Brad wrote ' I'm sure that as they ran out of the proper parts, they just went on to the new parts a wee bit early.' Oh yes! They were good at that. My Mk2 Midget, one of the last few built, had several components from the later Mk3 cars, including the seats, which I have been told on several occasions are the wrong ones for the car, quite forcibly I might add. Having owned the car from new, however, I know the truth of the matter! Probably to the plaudits of some and the sheer disbelief of others... MORE

Been away and just got back to the list. One more word about car covers and pets.I like pets to a point, but why must they insist on pushing our buttons? Yes there are many ways and products available to protect our cars from attack but whats the use? When you dare to leave the top down as you get out to check the mail some devil tom cat slips in and skunk sprays the dash befor you can say holly cat piss#*&#@&*!! Now tell me this hasnt happeOh crap its raining againnd to you! Or as soon as you... MORE

Stewart That's interesting, Teal Blue was never an OE colour for 1500 Midgets! It does sound as though you have a bit of a 'hybrid' car, a crossover car between the end of the chrome bumper cars and the start of the Rubber Bumper ones. They were well known for using up 'old-stock' components on the revised range. My own 1971 car is a little like this, having a bonnet prop, yet telescopic stay for the boot! The first RB cars were made in September 1974, first chassis number being GAN6-154101. I'm not really sure what you're trying to... MORE

Hello.. I have two sprigets.. The first car is a 1974 1500 (yes they do exist as I had to keep telling anyone I orderd parts for it from!)Which I bought in 1988, dorve for 6 months and then stripped, scince then I have replaced the inner and outer sills, repaired the floor and the front chassis sections and inner fornt arches.. restoration has stalled there, and the last time I actulally worked on it was 1991 IIRC! If my research is correct it is the 126th 1500 midget built and it is /was teal blue registerd JMB742N The... MORE

Kevin No need to apologise, it's the old UK/American terminology thing again. Well, from the sounds of it, it's a pretty standard 'body rotten' Spridget! =3D=0D I think you'll also find that the rear spring hangers will need doing as well. You'll need to give this some serious thought, and Robert gave some good advice (if you remove the bit about pop rivetting the floors in!) First off you do need to consider whether you really want to start getting =3D=0D into body repairs yourself. Whilst as I said previously, there really isn't anyt =3D=0D hing bodywork wise on... Bob Using pop rivets on a structural panels is NOT a good idea, they need to be welded. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 24189... MORE

My apologies for the terminology gaff. The rotten bits are the inner & outer sills (rocker panels), floor pans, footwell panels, etc. Basically anything behind the wheels has rusted away. The previous owner drove the car year round. Which here in Wisconsin means it was subjected to the brutal winters & corrosive road salt for a third of the year. Thanks for the advice! -Kevin "kari_kevin" 24185... MORE

Kevin First off welcome to Spridget ownership! Unfortunately, you've fallen into the trap many first time buyers of these cars fall into, namely that of purchasing a mechanically sound car that leaves a lot to be desired bodily and structurally. Don't feel bad, many of us have walked this path before you! You have, however, had the sense to limit your investment which is prudent. I'm afraid I am not familiar with the terms 'rocker panels' and 'body tub' or at least I cannot easily translate these terms into actual parts of the car. So until I understand what... MORE

Hello all, Thanks for all the replies on my previous post regarding backfires. Here's my next newbie question: The `77 Midget I picked up a few weeks ago seems sound mechanically. It always starts, runs well, and doesn't leak or burn anything (though I haven't tried taking it through emissions testing yet). I drive it 10 miles to work a few times a week to work the bugs out. The outer body is in fair shape but repairable. The bad news is that the floors & rocker panels (what's left of them) are completely rotten. My question: Is the... MORE

Bob.... I say safety first when it comes to "serious" structure. According to Spridget books I've read, a great deal of structural strength emanates from firewall and is tied into the floors to the rear "bulkhead" which houses the forward rear spring attach points. I could be wrong on this and if I am, I apologize for THIS is the basis of my opinion, which is not very "hands on" learned to the extent of guys like Frank, Chuck, and others far more knowledgeable then I. If the floors and sills were basically sound and mostly there, I might... MORE

Hi guys: I am still in the process of repairing my 1979 midget 1500.got my new carpet kit in and since I do not have any carpet in my car, could someone recommend a site for good, clear pictures of the interior of a later midget? I want to make sure I get the carpet pieces in correctly. If you did carpet kits, what did you use for adhesive? Did you also use snaps or just the adhesive? Parts car: I just bought a parts car its an early 70's or possibly late 60's (I have no title and... MORE

Hey!! I go down to a "shoot" in NYC, get back, do a little work on the carbs, get back home for some dinner and tune in on the list to find.....what the hell is going on?! :) But just to let you know...IMHO you have your priorities in order! :) If my cat attacks you or your kid, you definitely have my approval to kill the cat, obviously. And if you are starving and need to kill an animal to live, I'll load the gun for you. Dogs are great animals. I'd have a German Sheppard (and my... MORE

G'day Brad The valve stem diameters are the same. You can squeeze 1275cc valves into a 1098cc head (12G295) if you want to, but you will need to open the combustion chamber up quite a bit to allow gas flow around the valve, or you are defeating the purpose. Really no great advantage. 1275cc head will fit on 1098cc block, but if you have a high lift cam, and/or 1.5:1 rockers, the exhaust valves will hit the top of the block face. You will need to machine a crescent out of the block, up to .100" deep (I just... MORE

with regards to understeer, this may be of interest, I swapped the front springs on my 1500 for 400lb 8 1/4" springs with poly bushes all round and a 3/4" ARB with nylatron bushes (i have a freeling the old ARB was 9/16ths) its a '75 UK car btw. Now, this tightend the front end up no end and felt great, however, ther rear still had the standards springs and was lowered 1" on blocks. After these mods it had a tendency to snap oversteer mid corner (after initially understeering) , I was going to play with the tyre... MORE
