I'm guessing without checking, Is this switch a mechanical one? Minis had pressure switch mounted in a tee piece (or possibly a 4 way connector ) in the hydraulic line before it was ( or just where it was) teed off to the rear brakes. It was fitted under the bonnet and easy to get at - only downer was if it needed replacing you had to bleed the brakes. Could be a simple mod ( Period though not original) that could be put to use in the midget. I never heard of one going wrong and almost bulletproof.... MORE

Although several strips of duct tape could be used over the larger openings a thought for a substitute for the original would be plastic coated contact paper such as was used to cover shelf's and furniture tops. Plenty strong enough as the function was only to keep dust, moisture and insects out of the interior door and window mechanism. Don "Don May" 30745... MORE

Dave Yes, that is one of those little design things with these cars. You have to loosen up the box, try to loosen up the screws/bolts but do not remove them except for possibly the 2 at the furthust end near the switch. Beware! of installing the new switch. If you ordered a replacement one from one of the usual places they are such inferior crap that you stand a good chance of breaking it trying to put it in. So go slow and don't let the wires get all twisted up or they may break off. Like mine... MORE
What's wrong with this picture? My brake light switch failed on my '71 Midget, so I ordered a replacment from Moss. I start to remove the old switch (the neck of the switch is threaded and mounted in a threaded hole in the clutch/brake pedal box) by attempting to rotate it out of its hole........to my surprise (I should not be, being a Midget owner!) it won't rotate because of lack of clearance! Am I crazy, or is this: 1. Just something on my car only, or 2. One of those loveable (hateful) design glitches that make owning one... MORE

Stewart With great difficulty! There's two ways of doing it - the safe way and the dangerous way! The safe way is as you're trying - to undo the bolts holding the spring seat into the wishbone whilst supporting the wishbone underneath on a trolly jack. If this is proving too hard - try the dangerous way - Support the wishbone on the trolly jack, undo the top kingpin trunnion bolt (that goes through the top kingpin trunnion and the arm of the shock absorber) and let the kingpin/stubaxle assembly drop down to the floor, whilst slowly lowering the... The switch in the 68 is shot, and I have made something up using a 75 plastic rocker snapped to the 68 base. I would like to see about getting the correct plain black rocker in the car. Nigel, pardon me for ignorence but where do those grease drenched felt washer for the handbrake mechanism go, is it inside the handle support? Jens Bill Strangely enough, I had planned on doing work on my rear axle yesterday, mainly to install the brake pipes but I had a few other jobs to do as well, such as re-installing the circlip that 'pinged' off! I had already bought two of the original type circlips for this and also bought some circlip pliers for the job. I have to say it was about a 5 second job to install those... MORE

Many thanks for your reply Nigel. I have had good dealings with Moss in the past and I would tend to agree that they only deal with good quality components. You are quite right that the Moss hoods are around =A3140, the price that I was originally looking at was for the hood and header rail......... That would certainly explain why i thought that they were expensive compared to the competition! Job for the summer though. Hi all I have just bought my first MG having previously had Morris Minors and latterly Mini Coopers.She is a 79 1500 in vermillion. She was a little bit rough but generally solid with only 2 owners and 70,000 miles on the clock. Having coaxed it back onto the road (and through an MOT) she is now looking rather smart apart from the hood. The original vinyl has been replaced with an astonishingly expensive mohair one which has shrunk so much that I daren't put it up for fear of cracking the windscreen! They were made out of vinyl... Chris Have you seen the price of those steel radio consoles? I can't recall exactly how much Moss were asking - but it was in the region of 60 odd quid! They do, do a cheaper fibreglass one, but in my opinon they're a bit naff. These are the later type consoles by the way that were standard fitment to 1500 Midgets. The 'optional' console for the earlier Midgets (like yours) are slightly different and not easy to find, I have seen them second hand, but they are pricey. G'day Rick, and congrats on getting the car home. We have fitted a few cars with 14" MGB wheels, with no problem. As long as you don't go too wide on the tyre profile. Two things you will need to do. 1.. The lip on the inside of the rear wheel arch needs to be gently folded up against the inner panel. This gives you only 1/8" or so extra clearance, but you will probably need it. If you are gentle with a hammer and dolly, you can do it in 10 minutes per side, and it will be... MORE

Rick Grats on your new acquisition, don't take any notice of some of the list 'snobs' there's nothing at all wrong with a 1500 - they're great little cars (apart from the Triumph engine which is a dog) And good luck with it ....not saying any more on that ;) Braided cable - not sure - could be a ground, could be the handbrake cable? Listers - (sounds like something you call people after a night on a booze cruise) I finally got my car home, created a folder in the photo section ("Ricks 75") and uploaded a photo... Figured out what caused the PO from finishing the restoration, he had snapped 2 bolts off while removing the passenger side front shock for some reason, soaking in WD40 for a couple of days and small amount of heat and the stubs came right out. I have a 1961 Bugeye that was originally Cherry Red with a red interior. In my studies, I have found a paint chip in the AutoColor Library at AutoBodyDepot.net that seems to be true to what everyone tells me the orignial looked like - almost a Maroon. The dilemma is that the Red interiors available from Moss etc almost seem to clash and yet I'm told that there was only one shade of red for the interior and the Moss interiors are close to authentic. Jim, I have a '59 that was old English White WT.3, with Cherry Red interior. Now Competition Yellow with Black interior. I can send you a piece of the orig. Cherry Red interior that you can match to the Moss seat kits if you wish. The Cherry Red exterior was RD.4 and came with the Cherry Red seats with White piping. The door seals and mats were also Cherry Red according to my " BMC Body Exterior and Main Trim Colour Combinations." Hi I looked in my book by Porter, " 'Frogeye' Sprite - Super Profile" and on page 50 there are two pictures of a cherry red Frog with a red interior. The interior seems to match the paint well.
