My reasoning for going with a DCOE is for the following: 1. It was originally fed by a Zenith Stromberg carb for the 1500 midgets. I'm doing a complete restoration on the car, however, between the engine that came with the car (with a thrown rod) and the one I purchased to rebuild, neither came with a carburetor or a distributor. 2. I want to get rid of the zenith stromberg =) The engine is a basic 1500 engine. Stock cam in it, 9:1 compression and .020" overbore from the rebuild. Currently no head porting or anything done to... Hello again to the group I left for the winter. Now that spring weather is back in Iowa, I am rejoining the collective wisdom of the group. My brake lights do not work. Taillights do come on when the headlight switch is turned on. Looking up the wiring diagram, I assume the first thing that could be giving me trouble is the brake switch. Where is it located? Listers - Does anyone know if it's possible to fit an early Midget dash into a 1500 Midget (75), my current dash is beyound repair and I really like the early flat dashs with the curvy lower edge? Will probably make one myself, but thought it might save time, if I could find one that is? What were the early dashes made from? This might sound is bit odd.. try taping over 3/4 ish of both ram pipe intakes with gaffer (duct) tape. you might need to cover more than 3/4. This should do the same as the choke, once it is running and has gotten a bit warm you should be able to take it off One other thing, are the pistons in the carbs moving? this can sometimes cause similar to what you are experiencing Stewart "Ford Prefect" 31770... I hope someone can give me some advice on this. Drivers school and race second weekend in June and I can't get the bloody running. I have a highly tuned (national level) race bugeye from the 70's era. Don't know the compression ratio, but probably pretty high, 12 to 1 at least. 4,000 to 7,000 rpm cam. 30 deg. advance. 110 octane race gas. champion n59g spark plugs. Electronic ignition box. Groupies - Has anyone found a good way to strip the factory rust proofing from the bottom of a Midget? My 75 has rustproofing about as hard as concrete, I'll been finishing the top side and interior soon and was hoping to remove most of the under coating by hand someway to speed the striping process. Would a hand propane torch and a puddy knife work, or will I set it on fire? I have a small blaster and know it would take way to long to blast through all that sludge. Bob: Yes indeedy I am old enough to remember radio spark suppressors. In high school I had a 31 Model A Ford coupe with a Cadillac signal seeking radio mounted in the shelf behind the seat. Did I ever need a spark suppressor! The last time I saw one was in the ever present J C Whitney catalog. I can find Whitney catalogs in the magazine section of my local grocery store. Ryan Oh how I know how you feel... Check the oil in the dashpot, inside cap oh top of carb. Then remove the cover and check the rubber diaphram for any holes or tears. Either of these may cause the problem you are having. For now check the easy/obvious stuff first. Mike mk2sprite@... 31710... MORE
Hi all, What a day today was!! 120plus miles in bright Cornish sunshine! Cannot wait untill tomorrow! She is running like a dream carbs are a bit lean but gogin to sort that out tomorrow!! I really do Love these little cars! I filled her up with optimax she seems to be running well One problem is that the ignition light is glowing (only very slightly) when i am gogin slowly!! fan belt seems not to be slipping! alternator on the way out maybe?? As I inspected the transmission area on the sprite I noticed an extra hole on each side of the tunnel at about where the shift stick protrudes. Looks like the holes have pop rivet covers, about 6x6 inches, in place. I am not being funny or rude, but have you considered a 1275 powered & chrome bumpered vehicle ? As you seem keen on competition, an early car is always going to be faster, handle better & more powerful. Do not get me wrong I do not have grudge against rb cars, its just more bang for you buck RB cars are fine for the road, but not for comp. Cap'n Bob and Robert, Flew aboard whales (EA-3B Skywarrior) from various carriers, primarily in the Med. As a CT augmentee out of Athens, Greece and Rota, Spain, most of my flying dets were to the USS JFK. I have to be honest and say that I was not at the controls as the pilot during cats and traps, but I did drive once (with the pilot's concurrence as sidesaddle) at a steady 35K feet. Tuesday I was minding my own business, quite literally I was looking for a new site for a lumberyard in a community we don't have one. James, You are right, mustangs are nice cars (I had a '67), but there is something different about driving a midget. Guess there's one short way to explain it.... I used to fly off aircraft carriers, and sitting in the cockpit of a midget is the closest thing to being in a jet on the ground. Just wish I had an afterburner strapped on...or at least overdrive! Hi These heater taps are no longer in production, I had the same trouble with mine. I bought a nice looking second hand one complete with the mounting bracket and the little metal pipe that goes on the other side, but that too leaked...even worse than the original!! In the end I used my existing metal pipe and the metal pipe from the new (second hand)one to essentially bypass the tap altogether. The heater is now permanatly on and I control the airflow by pulling out the heater control on the dash and by opening/shutting the footwell flaps. This... MORE
Trevor - The original motors are from (not sure of the years and model types) something like 61 to 64 Buick Skylark sedans (I believe mines a 64), I think how the story goes is after the Buick 215 V8 went out of production the tooling was sold to Rover and is now known as the Rover aluminum 3.5 litre V8. Some parts are interchangeable between the motors, I plan on using polished Rover valve covers. Listers - I posted a message a few weeks back about attempting to get a proper title for my 75 Midget, without much luck... Yahooooiiiieeeee ! The title arrived in the mail a couple of days ago! After 4 calls to the local and state DMV offices, I finally talked to someone who new what was going on and gave me the direct line of the lady who handles such things, sent me the proper papers and local police officer inspected the VIN numbers signed the papers and bingo.... Nigel I posted the original question and I seem to have confused a few of the guys who were kind enough to take the time to try to help me out. The floor is rotted away from the outside in, I will be replacing both inner and outer sills however the left and right hand floor panels would not (even if welded together) create a new one piece floor, they are not wide enough. Anybody every take the column out and just shorten it? On my 73 it seems it could be 3-4 inches closer to the dash. The fellow customizing the black one did what I think is a very attractive dash. That type of dash, with a shortened column should give us more room, no? Ben... I always had a hard time fitting the conv. top "cover" over my folded down top as well. Very "strained", tight fit. I finally just used the tonneau cover, putting a soft terry cloth towel between the tonneau fabric and the top to avoid any chance of the tonneau fabric from scratching the plastic window(s) should they come into contact....and the hell with the "cover"!! :):) Cap'n. Who out there has experience/knowledge of the OBDII systems present on 1996 and newer cars. I'd like to get something to interface with that port under the dash. You can get OBDII code readers from the auto parts stores or even Sears, but I'm curious to know what others have found that they are really happy using. I'd be particularly interested in what someone has that will interface with a Palm or a laptop. There seem to be quite a few of those out there too. Anyone know of Mac compatible stuff?
