I would suggest before you rush out to buy a new switch, disconnect the battery, spray plenty of WD 40 in it and work it back and forth repeatedly. Use plenty, enough to really flush it out. It's not that WD 40 is the best lube for a switch, but it won't hurt it and it will soften any old hardened oil and grime that may be causing it to stick. If it starts to work again flush it out again. You never know what previous owners have used to lube the switch if they did use oil it... MORE
Oh, YEAH!! Quick & Fast they were...the 427 astoundingly so! My mech who owns Classic & Muscle Automotive owns a kit Cobra with a Ford "crate" in it, built by a firm up New Hampshire way. Jim Gold was never a factory colour. There was 1 Golden Jubilee Midget made in 1975 to celebrate 50 years of MG =3D=0D (1925-1975) but only one of these were made. After stripping off the front end outer metal work and cleaning the engine compartment I discovered there is a crack in the transmission bell housing. The tab like area at the top of the clutch bell housing where the top two bolts are located has a horizontal crack below them.. It does not appear to be a major structural problem once the transmission bell housing is bolted on as all other areas and bolts are sound. It looks like an easy in place weld job. Is it possible to weld the aluminum housing material? Some PO strangeness as usual... MORE

Thanks for the offer of the repair panels, I think we did agree that, unforuntately, I'd already finished the side that they would have fitted and it was in fact the other side repair panels that I needed - comes under the general heading of sod's law I think. Nigel, I acid etched before I did anything else. In fact on mine I had sand blasted it myself and it was very, very bright shiny steel. I acid etched within an hour of the sandblasting, just after cleaning everything out with compressed air. Even if you cannot do this I would aim to clean it up as best you can and then put the primer on as soon as possible. Filler goes on later, but is porous and also absorbs moisture so keep it dry or cover the filler with a surface coat. It may be worth treating... MORE

Rob... the temp rise, along with the stumble... tells me it's running very lean at higher speeds. Do an old fashioned 'plug check'. Find a stretch of road where you can cruise at say.. 30-40mph steady for about 10 minutes. While at speed, switch off the ignition and coast/brake over to the side of the road. Pull a sparkplug and see if it's whitish, or grayish/brown in color. Now repeat the cruise at 50-55mph. Kill the engine at speed Pull over and check the plugs again. Hi Everyone: I am now trying to fit my car's interior back together (it's a 1979 1500 Midget with Russett Brown xterior and what I think is Autumn Leaf interior). I have heard conflicting names for the brownish/russet colored interior that my car came with.can someone tell me how I can determine definitively if its Autumn Leaf (and not Biscuit or Beige or something else)? Hi All I have a 79 midget and have to no lights.The column switch is very loose and needs replaceing. I got a new lucas switch from my local import parts store. I paid $98.00 for it.Is this a fair price? I am planing on putting it in tomorow morning.Will I need a puller to get the steering wheel off. Mark Don't do it the gauge is easy to remove the dash is not. Just undo the knurled nut at the back of the clamp and pop it out, the oil pipe union can be unscrewed from the engine or the back of the gauge (once popped out) the water temperature sender connection if it is into the rad (as mine is on the 66) can be a bit of a pig to remove without damaging the sender cable but if you are renewing the gauge this will not matter. "I am building a 1275 to the specs of my 1340 Cooper S that I had in the UK. I had the cam ground close to the 731 cam that I had in that motor. It will have a big valve head and cooper s distributor. It is .030 over. I have several leather hides and decided to cover all panels and dash with that. I put floors, lt rocker and A post piller sections back in it plus a new bonnet. (Since buying a bonnet I bought a 68 with an excellent bonnet for $400.) Oh well. All... MORE

Biff, Thanks. I checked everything you mentioned and Wham!, the dimmer switch on the floor had a loose connection. It looked like it was hooked up but when I wiggled the center wire around, the lights came on. I cleaned all three connections and the headlights are on! Thanks a bunch, Jack "austinbud2002" 23412... The dimmer switch strikes again. A common source of headlight problems particularly with older spridgets that have sat for long periods of time and are not driven at night often. Not enough mechanical action to keep the internal contacts cleaned of oxidation or simple vibration from use to keep the spade lugs from oxidation build up. Yes, Electric Fan well worth doing (IMHO). Mine is actually a mk2 Sprite but I have a Kenlowe fitted as a puller (i.e. inside the engine bay pulling air in through the rad) and the engine fan removed. I actually ignored the Kenlowe fitting kit which is a one size fits none Heath Robinson affair. I slung the fan on some brackets attached to the shroud. It's been like that for several years 20k miles and seems fine. Ava would have a different rad. of course but still possible I expect. It's a great mod beacuse it's win-win. The... MORE
Thanks your pics are helpful. It appears that the upper bolts are accesed from under the dash, correct? I have tried to remove the lower screws and bend the dash out for access but it has a lot of resistance. The dual gauge is above the steering column and limits access. "MARK " 23368... MORE
